This post sure as hell became relevant in an unplanned and unforseen way due to the surge of sexbots as of late, huh.

"This new deletion policy is terrible for preservation of archival media" that's the point, bro. That's explicitly the point, though they'll never admit it. Major social media platforms straight up do not want archival media to be a thing – it disrupts their business model by existing, and it's hard to monetise. In their perfect world, media more than 90 days old would vanish in a puff of smoke and be irrecoverably forgotten.

yeah this is part and parcel of turning everything into a service. no more buying things once now becomes no more paying for unlimited access.

i will never complain about a book seeming like a fanfic with the serial numbers filed off because that means the author had the invaluable ability to tell when their au had diverged enough that these were just straight-up different characters now

hi Frank! if you could send a message into space, to maybe be read by an intelligent alien species in the future, what would your message say?

“hello potential new friends!

i am human. we are a type of bipedal primate from the planet earth. it’s a very long way out here in the solar system. i live on the planet in orbit around the star sol.

my message is going to sound strange and alarming. i am sorry.

here’s why:

many of our loved ones are dead or dying. we have not been alive for very long, but we are dying faster and faster. soon, there may not be any of us left. please don’t let this happen. please help us.

we have a lot to say about our situation, but it’s very difficult to explain. our language is very limited. please read this message very carefully and tell us what you understand. we will do our best to respond to you.”

oh this is lovely Frank, but very sad :(

#please don’t let us die

(I don’t mean to be morbid, but I guess it’s a common sci-fi trope that when there are intelligent aliens from far away, we’re probably already dead or deadish, right? It’s the only thing that makes it morally acceptable to contact them. Since we’re probably dead or dying, we don’t have to worry about hurting them)

why do you think it isn't morally acceptable to contact intelligent aliens unless we (as a species) are dying? why would us contacting them hurt them?

“To be clear, what this means is that the AI model that is being used across the world for everything from customer service, to HR training, to journalism, knows what “knotting” is.”

Oh my goodness.
