Travel Journaling Tips + Suggestions! 🐌

1. So a friend of mine who travelled to Prague this summer said that during her times abroad, it wasn’t about a fashion show to her. She didn’t care too much about clothes and often wore khaki shorts and t-shirt because what mattered more was the experience, not the aesthetics. For me, the same goes for journals. Don’t try to go fancy with it. Keep it simple, you don’t have to go for the over priced Moleskins or the fancy book with the textured pages. Dig for the notebook you have in the bottom of that supply drawer or closet at home. I prefer small notebooks without lines cause they’re easy to carry and it feels more intimate.

2. Be a hoarder. By that I mean, keep every bus ticket, museum entry stub, receipt from every meal you have at every restaurant, every business card, poster, leaves/ flower petals, notes, candy wrappers, or other mementos. All these seemingly disposable items will later serve as great proof of the places you’ve been to in foreign lands and will remind you of what you ate, how you travelled, who you spoke to, etc. You never know when you will return to a certain place, so bring back as much of it as you can.

3. I think you should definitely dedicate an entry, the first, in your journal to what your expectations or preconceived notions are about the destination you are visiting. Because guess what, what you think you know may or may not hold up and by the end of your trip, the bank of knowledge about your location will have increased vastly. It’s good to reflect on these things.

4. And going along with that, whatever new facts you learn, write them down the moment you hear them so you don’t forget. If you go to a destination that speaks a language that is not your own, embrace it and jot words or phrases down. Practice their writing system. Words and language hold value. Also, it’s nice looking back to see what the language spoken even looks like, so later on in life, you can recognize it.

5. Write every day. This may feel like more of a task as time goes on but you will be grateful to have done so. And how you write is up to you. You can simply list what you did that day, or complete lengthy diary entries. Or just describe locales or sceneries as you pass them by. How you fill your lines or blank pages is up to you, but you will want to remember those days spent because memory is never as reliable as you think and the day will come where you can’t remember the name of that really cute shop you went to or the name of that place with the really good wine.

6. One thing I wish I did in my journal was sketch certain areas in Greece I’ve been to, although I ran out of pages quickly. You don’t have to be a “good” artist to do this but this goes back to the whole memory thing. You want to capture those sights and nuances of a physical place, and having those sketches will help you to better imagine how those places indeed appeared. Again, the goal of your journal is not to make it look pretty for some Insta post later on. For that, do a bullet journal. Your travel journal is specific and individual to you, and will mostly be your eyes only so don’t worry about how neat, organized, or pretty anything looks.

7. Paper clips for the win! Sure, you can glue stuff down to your journal, but later on, if you want to interact with whatever you’ve inserted into your journal, you won’t be able to. Also, many things are double-sided so I would just stick to paper clips and staplers, when necessary.

I think that’s mainly it. Since completing my time abroad for summer study, I’ve been sleeping with my journal each night, wishing I were back in Poros or Athens or Nafplio. For me, it truly holds a lot of sentimental value and it was actually my travel writing course that made us turn in journal entries for which I am grateful. I know I would’ve regretted it if I hadn’t done one because so many beautiful things happened that I want to remember, and I met loads of good people. It’s an experience I want to preserve and hopefully you will too.
