Tomorrow in Australia, we are having the “R U OK? Day”. This day is aimed at promoting conversations as simple as “are you ok?” in order to raise awareness for, and attempt to prevent, mental issues; focusing on suicide. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gained nearly as much support as it should have being a relatively new campaign. I think this campaign is very important because it’s raising awareness for this often overlooked issue and has a simple message of asking your friends if they’re OK.
Starting conversations and sharing issues big or small with those around you, knowing that they’ll listen without judgement can be very helpful for people experiencing issues. It is said that “A problem shared is a problem halved” and this year, the day is targeting friends to take the initiative and ask other friends if they are feeling all right.
Even though it hasn’t really spread beyond Australia, much I think it’d be easy enough for other people overseas to take part in this day and become more proactive about making sure the people close to them are feeling alright.
For people in Australia, look out for those around with a black and yellow wristband saying “ask a mate” for the people who are supporting the cause.
