Kaiju Week in Review (June 11-17, 2023)

Tsuburaya Productions released a five-minute trailer for Ultraman Blazar, focused on the human cast. Between this and the unveiling of a bunch of the monsters (a combination of originals and some deep cuts), it continues to look extremely promising.

Toho launched a Twitter account for their next Godzilla film on June 12. It's been counting down all the "core" (live-action and Toho-produced) entries in the series at the rate of one per day, starting with Shin Godzilla. Presumably, they'll reveal the poster, title, and maybe more for the new one at the end (so July 11). The way they're doing this also lends credibility to the rumored Godzilla Zero title.

Hoshi 35, Megumi Odaka's triumphant return to movies, released a trailer, poster, and a bunch of stills (gathered on Wikizilla). Alas, no shots of the daikaiju in the trailer, just the baby.

Bandai's finally going to be producing Ultraman toys for the U.S., with the first wave focused on the animated Netflix movie due next year.

For those of you headed to G-Fest next month, the full schedule is out, and they finally announced the Friday and Saturday movies at the Pickwick: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla (2014), respectively. King Kong Escapes will also replace Shin Ultraman on Thursday. Dunno if I'll go to GXMG (I just rewatched it before the Tokyo SOS Fathom Event), but I'm lunging at the chance to see G14 properly-lit and with booming sound. They showed it in 2017 too and it was a blast. For the hotel's film festival, the big title of interest is Yuzo the Biggest Battle in Tokyo, a Yoshikazu Ishii joint set during the pandemic. And if you haven't caught Iké Boys yet, that's playing twice (very much before the audience it was intended for).

Also, go to my friend Alana's panel about designing kaiju gijinkas for cosplay (Saturday at 1). If you've been to either of the past two cons, you probably remember her Mothra costumes, and we're both working on a bunch more for this year.

I haven't been keeping up with Godziban's multi-episode collaboration with Televi-Kun—seems like pretty routine stuff—but then they had to pay homage to Sharknado in the newest installment. I knew, of course, that this day would eventually come. Now which one of you said sharknadoes weren't kaiju back when I was unhealthily obsessed with that series?

NGL I have STRONG opinions about digital releases omitting the letters to the editor section of older comics. I feel like the letters are a part of comic history and should be aggressively preserved.

I'm feeling this again. I also have strong opinions that the letters to the editor section need to be brought BACK.

I wish I was a female tiger because then if I was talking to someone and I was getting off topic I could say “but I tigress,” and then kill and eat them because I am a tiger

This is meant as entirely lighthearted: can't believe how many people are calling Benoit Blanc the spiritual successor to Sherlock Holmes as if social eccentricities, roping clients into intricate ruses and solving murders at glamorous parties - with an outrageous accent and a gay little fit - are not all textbook Hercule Poirot. Like that's the Poirot modus operandi right there.

Another #paleostream sketch

Baru, a large, broad snooted, mekosuchians crocodile.

Baru is probably one of the more underappreciated crocodiles of Australia. Like most of the endemic crocs, its a mekosuchine, tho unlike the terrestrial Quinkana Baru fills a more traditional semi-aquatic rolle in its ecosystem. There's a lot of species (tho at least one is likely to be a distinct genus) that were the dominant ambush predators of the Oligocene and Miocene. I'll have to dig deeper eventually, so I expect to find even more interesting stuff. Also here's the skulls of Baru darrowi (from Willis, Murray & Megirian 1990) and Baru wickeni (by yours truly)

I'm pretty on board with the headcanon that what Link gets out of being the bearer of the Triforce of Courage is the power of being a video game protagonist, but I genuinely can't decide whether it would be funnier if he's 100% aware of how much bullshit his everything is, or if he honestly doesn't realise.

Like, does he know that normal people can't recover from life-threatening wounds in a matter of minutes by drinking a jar of really good soup? It's the sort of thing you'd assume would be obvious just from being around other human beings, and yet.

The fact that Breath of the Wild Link's laser-parrying trick is something that only works for him is made explicit in the dialogue, so presumably he's at least aware that it's exceptional, but does he understand that it's complete bullshit, or does he think it's just a skill issue?

Link: No, that's fair, if I fuck up the timing I have to eat a laser to the chest and that is, understandably, extremely painful, so I don't recommend you practice this unless you're really confident about your timing.

Random Guard:...Link people die if they take those to the chest.

Link: I mean you should be angling yourself, i'm not saying to just let your sternum take a whole blow, to just take it square, that's a terrible idea

Random Guard: It explodes rocks.

Link: You have armor for a reason my guy.

Random Guard: ...

Link: If it helps, drinking some fire resist potions has proven to be moderately effective for me.

Random Guard: The Ones you apply to your skin?

Link: What

Random Guard: What

Speculative breeding colors bull Lambeosaurus with a big dewlap doing a big stomp to impress the ladies! I realized I’d drawn lamb less than I thought, which is a tragedy because its one of my favorite dinosaurs.

Everyone brings up that Ultraman wasn’t his actual name in the original series

But nobody ever mentions that by that logic Ultraseven also probably isn’t his name

He is called Ultraseven because he is the unofficial Seventh member of the Ultra-Guard

HANDODO (Ghost) The Hand Bird pokemon This pokemon is the pre evolution of BIRDIGIT

It is based on Hand Turkeys, those drawings made by kids during thanksgiving

The "Dodo" in the name is both a reference to the flightless bird and to "doodle", referencing the hand turkey's origin
