we justifiably give Biden a lot of shit but I think "at least 3" is the funniest possible response to some right wing dipshit asking you how many genders there are

wait it gets better

[ID: a sort of transcript between the interviewer and Biden, going like this:

"There are at least three," Biden responded, without missing a beat.

The woman then ased him to name them.

"Don't play games with me, kid," Biden responded, shutting her down.

Streaming companies are the landlords of media. You will rent in perpetuity, and never actually own anything.

The Conversation about mental health posts goes in waves - from "it's ok to just do nothing for a while" and "self care is lying in bed with a cup of tea" to a hard backlash against that ("those posts were so damaging to me") and posts like "acually self care is cleaning your apartment," and there's lots of reasons for that --

  1. those posts are for different people. the person who believes that there's nothing wrong with them, they just need to keep going, or the person who believes that not washing dishes means there's something unfixably wrong with them needs to hear that that's unsustainable & a break will help, but the person who feels that everything's already ruined so there's no point in doing anything needs to hear that small steps are still steps.
  2. those posts are for the same person at different times, because people need to hear different things at different times in their lives.
  3. when you post on the internet you can't limit a post to only the people it will benefit - like when broad spectrum antibiotics take out beneficial bacteria. and people don't always know which one will help them, so the audience doesn't even self-select. "it's ok if you do nothing" will help some people and hurt others!
  4. honestly the thing is that it's "you can't push yourself all the time, but keeping your space in a state that doesn't cause anxiety or discomfort is probably better for you," but hitting the right balance requires a lot of self-knowledge, which you can't get from a text post on tumblr.

i don't have a good conclusion here - just "nothing in excess," I suppose.

Also if you CAN'T do something, there's pretty much no situation where beating yourself up and saying mean things to yourself about it is going to make it better.

Im so obsessed with looking at detailed decorated rooms in horror movies like especially if theres posters and trinkets.... its so important to me.. if theres recognizable posters in there im giggling and kicking my feet

“[The] obsession with the body suggests a connection between horror and pornography, one critics have noted before (Williams 1989b, Clover 1992). The horror film, like pornography, dares not only to violate taboos but to expose the secrets of the flesh, to spill the contents of the body. If pornography is the genre of the wet dream, then horror is the genre of the wet death. They each whet the appetites of their respective and overlapping audiences for more, as video rental receipts and the proliferation of remakes and sequels attest. The link between hard-core pornography and hard-core horror or the gore film is captured in the term “carnography” (Gehr 1990, 58), which uses the carnality of both genres as a bridge.

(…)

These disreputable genres violate taboos by privileging the act of showing the body, by figuring what Clover calls “the ‘opened’ body” (1992, 32). They expose what is normally concealed or encased to reveal the hidden recesses of the body, porn through carnal knowledge and horror through carnage. Porn and horror are obsessed with the transgression of bodily boundaries. Both are concerned with the devouring orifice. But whereas pornography is concerned with the phallic penetration and secretions of sexually coded orifices like the mouth (gaping in ecstasy or pain), vagina, and anus, horror is more concerned with the creation of openings where there were none before.”

Isabel Cristina Pinedo, Recreational Terror: Women and the Pleasures of Horror Film Viewing

I see it a lot in my students that the ONLY mode they can engage with literature on is one in which they either say it's good because it's "relatable" or it's bad because they "can't relate to it" as well, and I feel like this is a symptom of the same problem. An unwillingness to engage with fiction outside of its ability to be a mirror to your specific worldview and set of morals. But art doesn't exist to give you moral purity badges--it's a mode of expression that produces conversations between artists and readers. And to engage in those converesations on an adult level you need to learn to process the discomfort of flawed human realities productively.

yesterday I was at gamestop and a man in full Data cosplay walked up to the front counter and I did a double take so hard I nearly broke my neck. So, he walks up and the cashier just casually smiles and goes “How’s it going, Data? What can I do for you?”  and Data goes, “I am doing quite well. I was just wondering when you guys would have Destiny 2 in stock.” This mans……literally did not smile or emote at all. He went all in. The cashier was totally non fazed. I, however, was completely shitting my pants cos ya’ll DO NOT understand how good this dude’s cosplay was. It really looked like fuckin data teleported into the middle of game stop in rural ohio to ask about motherfucking destiny 2.

The only time he broke character was when I was stealthily trying to stare at him and thinking about asking for a pic when he was walking out. This dude. Looked at me, completely expressionless. and WINKED at me. Someone collect ya mans he wildin lmfao

The wink isn’t even really ooc I think he would totally do that

I can’t believe Data violated the temporal directive just to buy Destiny 2

Every time I see companies selling """punk""" jewellery or clothing I become apoplectic with rage. Just saw a £65 padlock necklace advertised to me bitch Fuck you go to your nearest weird little shop that sells everything in the world including fake Rolexes and bongs the size of a toddler. Buy a thing of chain and a padlock. Borrow some bolt cutters someone you know will probably own some and if not get some cheap ones or borrow from a local tool library. Slap em together. Maximum cost £30 and that's MAXIMUM that's assuming you bought over a metre of expensive heavy chain AND bought the bolt cutters. You can do it for under a fiver with a wallet chain and pliers. I still wear a necklace I made when I was 15 out of a wallet chain and pliers and a padlock I got in a set of 3 from poundland. If the issue is dexterity or otherwise disability related then find a friend and swap a favour with them it'll still be cheaper than these scamming poser companies and will help you build community and share resources. Something which is actually punk. Fuckin. Capitalist posers

Important to keep in mind there's a distinction here between 'someone who paints and sells patches in their own small business' (cool, craftsmanship, usually very fairly priced for materials and labour while still affordable for punks who don't have that skillset to buy, honestly not a category far removed from 'if you buy me lunch I can paint your jacket' exchanges) and big companies who charge extortionate prices for something that's supposed to be counterculture, paying staff minimum wage and making huge profits the workers will never see a penny of (cunts)
