assume people are trying their best, want to be good and treat others well, and that when their behavior doesn’t align with those goals, it’s because of outside factors that are pushing them to their limit

before anyone jumps in with an “op has clearly never worked in the service industry,” i work in a public facing library job

i have a patron who is mean as a snake. won’t respond when you greet her, barks orders at you, and is generally nasty

i couldn’t stand her & dreaded the moment she walked in the door, until i stopped one day & went “wow, to walk around feeling unhappy enough to treat people so horribly every day. what a difficult way to live.”

and so my tactics changed. i made a point to be extra kind & friendly to her. she changed her hair color one day & when i complimented her on it, she was very caught off guard & said “oh, thank you. my whole life i’ve thought i was ugly.”

now we’re at the point where she shows me pictures of watercolor paintings she made & says hi when she walks in the door. she’s not my favorite patron, but she’s perfectly okay. most unpleasant people aren’t inherently rotten, they’re just unhappy & coping with it poorly

sometimes you just have to let yourself be a bit neurodivergent.

i hate going out, it gives me a lot of anxiety and sensory input that i dont like, and i am often forced to talk to people.

so i do this thing on more difficult days, or sometimes just for fun, where i "bring a fictional character with me". i walk and imagine Fictional Character walking next to me. they talk to me, reassure me, hype me up, whatever i need them to do.

today dean winchester came christmas shopping with me. he went over the list with me of stuff i needed to get, told me i was doing a good job every time i finished in a certain shop, reminded me to take a deep breath when i got a little overwhelmed.

and yea. its kinda silly. and i know its just me talking to myself in a different voice, but it Works! especially since all of my special interests/hyperfixations tend to be tv/movie related.

so do what you gotta do to Get Shit Done. stop holding yourself to neurotypical standards. if you need Fictional Character to tell you you're doing a good job, do it! if you need Favourite Singer to walk you to school, do it! yea it might feel silly but you're literally fighting against your own brain to get stuff done every single day. you can have a little self indulgent daydream, as a treat.

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.

For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.

The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.

So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

I will literally spend so much money on a thing if I like it and want it enough. I have dropped $50 on a shitty 2003 DVD because they don’t make that version anymore (the Americanized Kiki’s Delivery Service dub from the 90s, which is no longer available on streaming or Blu-ray). Fuck, I’ll even pay for a streaming service! By all means, take my money, corporations! I will literally give you my money in exchange for goods and services.

But when no amount of money will buy you a thing, what other option is there? Like, if a corporation is refusing my money, the loss is caused entirely by them.

And before anyone brings up books: books will never be the same as films or TV shows until Amazon starts making you rent books or breaks into your house to steal them. If I can’t afford a book or simply don’t want to spend money on it, there’s always the library. The nature of books means some copy of it is usually available somewhere, even if it’s out of print, compared to HBO just straight up refusing to make DVDs of Our Flag Means Death, so there’s no way a library can get a copy to circulate and there’s no recourse if they yoink it from their platform tomorrow.

All of the above is valid, but just to throw this out there: if corporations are allowed to remove media for a tax write-off, part of that deal should be that it immediately goes into the public domain.

That would make sense, right? If it's so unprofitable that it's not worth keeping around, so unprofitable that the company needs government support in dealing with the financial set-back? Then it should immediately become public domain.

Let the movie theaters play it without having to pass on all the ticket sales to someone else. Let the creators sell their own self-minted copies with their commentary track that was definitely not supervised by the studio. If it's a tax write-off, we should be allowed to release it into the economy for the public good.
