KATE AND THE WITCH

throughout the entirety of yuppie psycho, kate is the only character outside of the sintra family who seems to have any connections to the witch.

Though she herself is relatively unaware of the witch and/or is actively ignoring the witch, there are a few little details that tie them together throughout the game and everything surrounding it. I mention two details in-game and two details outside of the game in this post, but I draw no conclusions from any of these connections.

I find it difficult to say anything super definitive about what this could mean for Kate since we know so little about her and her personal life. I have heard theories that Kate herself is a witch or that she is somehow related to a witch, but I have no real evidence to counter or defend either of these possible explanations.

HUGO’S PARTY

After Brian pretends to decapitate Kate at Hugo’s party, the witch attacks, and most of Brian’s friends can be seen in the bloody aftermath—except for Kate. Kate can be found in her own unique cocoon later in the game, but in an entirely new area, completely separate from the others. The Kate cocoon is also identical to the “witch” that attacks during the party. Regardless of the reasons Kate specifically was used to attack the partygoers, this only strengthens the connection between her and the witch. I still have several questions about why Kate’s cocoon is so unique and why she was placed in a hard-to-reach area, but I will have to pour more research into those questions another time.

BEWITCHED

In the bewitched cutscene, Kate explains that she once dreamed of a witch; she claims she does not remember much about this dream, but she remembers Brian being there. When Kate says that the witch was hidden behind the curtains in this dream, a shot of Kate’s face hidden behind white lilies is shown. While the dream serves as more foreshadowing, it is rather bizarre for Kate to have dreamed of the witch in such detail.

In my post about the bewitched cutscene, I stated that I believe the white lilies were more symbolic for the talisman placed on Kate’s face due to the meaning of the flowers, but I want to cover all bases by also proposing that her being hidden behind the flowers while she says this line can give it a double meaning.

HALLOWEEN GALLERY ART

In Yuppie Psycho’s gallery, there is a special Halloween artwork that features Brian, Kate, and Sintra dressed up in costumes for the occasion. Kate is wearing a witch’s costume, complete with red eyes, long nails, and a red Sintracorp logo on her chest (akin to the ones Brian and Kate draw in blood). Kate bears these same features (minus the emblem with the Sintracorp logo) when she is possessed by Xiu Ying. Though she is not possessed by the witch herself, the resemblance remains, as the witch is usually represented by a hand with long black nails.

It is very likely the Halloween art is not considered canonical, but it remains as a direct reference to Kate and the witch.

THE ADVENTURES OF MAPPY & SOSA

At the end of The Adventures of Mappy and Sosa (S01E01), Sosa and Mappy feel threatened by a coworker dressed up as a witch. Though Mappy quickly obliterates her, the coworker bears a striking resemblance to Kate in her Halloween costume. I do have to say that the handmade style of the videos makes it difficult to really get a good grasp on her features, making it entirely possible that the coworker is not Kate at all.

hi hi!! like i said, i really have no idea what to make of all of this… i don’t really see the possibility of kate being a witch herself, but i feel like some kind of conclusion should come out of all of this!

THE BLANK SAVE FILE

hi hi! i do mention suicide and hanging in this post and recite half of a suicide note, though i do not show any photos at all. these things are relevant to the topic at hand and therefore i do not recommend skipping the sections in which they are mentioned- it would be better for those sensitive to such content to disregard this post altogether.

After the DLC update of October 2020, a blank save file dated April 1st, 1972, 11:18 p.m. was added to the player’s saves. Once loaded, the save file throws the player into a pitch black area with the sound of eerie wailing in the background. Navigating in the dark can be difficult, but if players find their way, they can be met with one of two scenes.

SAVE FILE CONTENTS

If the player heads towards the right, they will eventually come across a hallway similar to that on the second floor with a pink baby carriage blocking the way. After a moment’s pause, the baby carriage rushes towards the player, and they are sent back to the title screen.

If the player heads left instead, they will be met with the scene of a suicide. The player is tasked with taking a note from the hanging body and giving it to the only other person there- a woman crying on the floor. The note is a little scrambled and missing entire sentences, but the parts that can be made out read: “I couldn’t handle listening to her voice. I’m sorry… for everything. You’re stronger than me- I know you will be-”

After being given the note, the woman fades away and leaves behind a pair of headphones that can be used on the giant machinery in the room. Once done, the player becomes Mr. Devil and is sent back to a pitch black room. They can interact with a bright red spiral in the middle of the room to be met with this dialogue exchange:

???: Daddy?

???: Daddy, is that you?

???: Don’t go away again. daddy, please! I’m scared!

???: I feel weird. What’s happening?

???: I can’t see anything.

???: W-Where are we, daddy?

Mr. Devil: Don’t worry, princess.

Mr. Devil: Don’t you know where we are?

???: No.

Mr. Devil: I’ve brought you to your favorite place, honey.

???: Where, daddy?

Mr. Devil: Just listen…

???: I hear the water…

???: Are we at the beach?

After listening to the sounds of waves for a bit, the player is sent back to the title screen.

INTERPRETATION OF THE SAVE FILE

The scene on the right is a reference to the alternate route the DLC update introduced. The same baby carriage can be seen throughout the game- on the second floor cameras, after Hugo’s party, and in the Sintra residence route itself.

The scene on the left seems to reference both João Sintra’s suicide and the Cornucopia Project. The date on the save file is the same day João passed away, so we can assume the body is his and the crying woman is his wife, Xiu Ying. It is implied that the mystery voice is Rei, as evidenced by the audio of Sintra saying “daddy” in the background when she is speaking. The conversation seems to be between João and Rei during one of the Cornucopia Project’s sessions, when Rei is blindfolded and restrained. She would reasonably be scared during this, so we hear João calming his daughter by putting headphones on her that are playing ocean sounds.

This save is believed to be João Sintra’s saved soul, making Brian’s/the player’s ability to load it connected to the Reincarnation Theory.

THE LEVIATHAN’S CROSS

the leviathan’s cross is a minor reoccurring symbol in yuppie psycho.

The leviathan’s cross is also known as the leviathan’s symbol, satan’s cross, and the brimstone symbol. The symbol itself comes from a combination of the double cross and an infinity symbol and appears in Anthony Lavey’s Satanic Bible as a mockery of the cross. While an upside-down crucifix is also a symbol embraced by Satanists, it is often confused with St. Peter’s cross, making the Leviathan’s symbol a more easily recognized one.

There seems to be three main ways of interpreting this symbol:

  1. Because the double cross represents protection and balance between people, and the infinity symbol represents constant, infinite nature (and most likely the universe), the leviathan’s cross can be interpreted to represent the idea that humans are their own centrum of balance and truth.
  2. The double cross can be interpreted as pathways or crossroads, representing free choice and multiple endings.
  3. The double cross can also be interpreted as a strike through an equal sign (=) to show that every person has their own life that is not inherently equal.

In Yuppie Psycho, the leviathan’s cross appears twice: once on the pamphlet for the ninth floor exhibition and again as a pin on Brian’s Halloween costume in the in-game gallery.

It is entirely possible the leviathan’s cross was included simply due to it’s relation to the devil, but the idea of multiple pathways and inequality is on par with the themes of the game as well.

Hello! Since you're taking research requests, I was wondering what you thought of the images that appear on screen when the Witch attacks you during the party. I don't know how many there are, exactly, but I know there's one that depicts a snake wrapped around a gem and another that looks like a broken baby doll. Do you think there's any deeper meaning to them, or are they there just to look creepy?

hi hi! thank you for the question! there are six images that can flash on the screen when attacked by the witch: a snake wrapped around a gem, a broken baby doll, a cornucopia full of skulls, an open mouth over a fire, two hands touching a fetus, and another strange image of what i assume to be a distorted baby with a symbol on it’s forehead.

the snake wrapped around the gem seems to be alluding to domori trapped in the gem/ice on the second floor. the image itself does not seem to be a symbol for anything specific, so this is where my speculation ends.

the broken baby doll might be referencing rei and her creepy counterpart since in the sintra residence route, she does have a doll that brian must collect for a puzzle. since the two baby dolls look completely different though, i think this is a bit of a stretch, and it might be there just to be creepy.

a cornucopia typically represents harvest and/or an abundance of something, so we can take the image of the cornucopia full of skulls to mean there is an abundance of death at sintracorp- not like we really needed a picture to let us know that...

the open mouth over the fire is directly referencing dormori’s burning at the stake. though the picture is of a campfire, most fire imagery and metaphors within yuppie psycho reference the burning, so i am assuming the same applies here.

in-game, hands with long black nails are typically used to reference the witch (such as in cutscene 09, bewitched) so i am going to assume the hands over the fetus belong to the witch. with this knowledge, i believe the fetus is meant to represent rei’s birth, since we are told that rei was only able to be conceived via domori’s blessing.

as for the last image... i am not entirely sure! i want to say it is also a baby doll and therefore relates to the other image of a baby doll, but it looks much more realistic than the other one. it also has a symbol drawn on it’s head, which i tried to look into to no avail. i am going to assume this is just to add to the creepiness factor of the other drawings and that it has no particular meaning. if anyone wants to try to identify the symbol on the baby, here is the image:

THE LOST TAPES

throughout the sintracorp building, there are several nameless VHS tapes that have been dubbed “the lost tapes”.

The lost tapes are never specifically referenced by anyone in-game, and Brian himself only comments on the lack of a title for the very first tape; he wordlessly collects the other two. The only tapes that any of the NPCs mention are the Videoclub Misterio tapes, which I have already made a post on here. Because of the lack of acknowledgement, it is hard to draw any definitive conclusions from these tapes, such as why they were made and who made them.

Each tape features a symbol drawn on the tape itself (with the exception of the final tape, which is only accessible via the Sintra residence television), and said symbol is also displayed at the beginning of the corresponding tape. The symbols on the second and third tapes are both vévés, religious symbols commonly used in different branches of vodun. Because of their correlation to vodun, I personally assume these tapes were created or originally owned by either R. Corvo or Mr. Hugo, though this is a bit of a stretch.

CONTENTS OF THE TAPES/MEANING OF THEIR SYMBOLS

LOST TAPE #1

The first tape features no dialogue. It seems to show two people attached to a string and gear mechanism, which causes the two of them to walk towards each other when activated, but other than that, it is nearly indecipherable. A friend of mine proposed the idea that the two intertwined individuals are supposed to represent Brian and Mr. Devil, with the string mechanism specifically reminding him of puppetry.

As for the symbol found on the tape, I believe it to be Hecate’s wheel. Hecate’s wheel is a Greek symbol used to represent the moon goddess Hecate. She is mainly known for her “triple goddess” aspect, appearing in the form of each phase of female life: maiden (the virgin), mother, and crone (the witch). These three sides are reflected in her wheel.

I am unsure if the symbol corresponds to the tape at all, but I find it interesting that it is easy to assign characters to the three sides of hecate: Kate or Atia Moeta as the virgin, Xiu Ying as the mother, and Domori or the snake as the witch.

LOST TAPE #2

The second tape also has no dialogue. We are shown a hand-drawn animation of two children playing together. The shorter child noticeably wears an eyepatch, which the other, taller child draws an eye on. Whether this is done in an attempt to comfort or tease the shorter child is unclear, but the shorter child appears uncomfortable or uneasy. It cuts to the shorter child walking alone in the woods and discovering what appears to be a woman’s corpse. A section of the deceased woman’s hair moves around before the tape ends.

I believe the symbol on this tape is the vévé of Ayizan. Ayizan is the loa (or, spirit) of the marketplace and commerce in vodou. She is regarded as the first priestess, and as such, she is associated with priestly knowledge, purification, protection, and mysteries. Though the theme of mystery is prevalent with these tapes, this gives no context as to who these children are or how they relate to Yuppie Psycho.

LOST TAPE #3

This is the only tape to have dialogue. We are shown various shots of the ocean, boats, and a statue that I am unable to identify but it appears to be of a woman in blue praying. The subtitles read: “Darling, you were always right… I was not ready. to lose it all.”

The symbol on this tape might be the vévé of Siete Rayos. Siete Rayos is the loa of lightning and fire, and seems to like cigars, rum, and bananas as offerings. From the dialogue and clips alone, i assume this tape is related to the Sintra family in some way. Rei often remarks that her family used to visit the ocean a lot on vacation, and there is the connection of fire to Domori’s burning.

Interestingly, the text files of Yuppie Psycho label this tape “homevideo,” while none of the other tapes are given names (only being called “lost tape 1” and “lost tape 2″).

thank you again to my friend asher! he was a big help in identifying symbols and gave second opinions on the meaning of each tape. ^^ if anyone has any ideas on how these tapes connect to yuppie, please feel free to share!

VIDEOCLUB MISTERIO

Hidden throughout the Sintracorp building, there are ten VHS tapes created by Ms. Sosa and Mappy, the only two members of Videoclub Misterio (with the exception of Brian, who can join if the player decides to). Most of these tapes feature subtle hints about in-game events.

A lot of the tapes can be found in full on Marta Sosa’s YouTube channel, with the addition of a few lore-related videos that cannot be found in-game. In this post, I specifically want to mention the Videoclub Misterio tapes on her channel; the other videos will have separate posts made for them in the future.

It is important to note that the videos that appear in Yuppie Psycho are altered versions of these short films on YouTube, therefore, some of the dialogue differs between the videos in-game and the videos on YouTube. Also, the videos on the YouTube channel work as stand-alone short films and were created before Yuppie Psycho was released, so there is no inherent connection between the plots of these films and the plot of Yuppie Psycho.

1. Chrysalys (Chrysalis (Crisálida) - 2005) 1:03 AM, OCT 19 199X

Chrysalys is a story about a young man who ran away from home discovering that his family uses missing person posters to try to locate him. The man has long since changed, though, and calls his mother to discourage her from continuing her search and tells her to take the posters down. From the video description: “His fears and worries lead him to withdraw into his mind and to kidnap himself in order to bring his mutation to a successful conclusion.”

In-game, the video has the cocoon creature say “cut… their… bandages…”, which is obviously a reference to Brian having to cut free his friends from their own cocoons in what I will call the Sintracorp route.

2. From the Drain (WATERWORLD 2) 4:51 AM, AUG 8 199X

The next video is only a little over a minute, and it depicts a man brushing his teeth while his toilet gives him ideas for his next short. That is the entire video.

In-game, the toilet says “under the pipelines, as in her swimming pool… the conquering worm grew, and grew…” There are two possible explanations for this line: it could be in reference to the snake, as Sintra/Rei remarks on how big it has gotten and is often depicted swimming, or it could be referencing cocooned Kate’s location in the underwater section.

3. Follow a Cat Through the Woods (CREMATORIUM (Crematorio) - 2012)  4:20 AM, MAR 15 199X

CREMATORIUM follows the story of a young man named Daniel, who visits the grave of his parents only to discover a note addressed to him. Curious, he reads it, and it instructs him to follow a white cat through the woods. He does so, and ends up meeting a ghostly woman with a talisman on her face, who proceeds to replace one of his eyes with a red gem.

In-game, this video has no dialogue, but shows a clip of the ghostly woman. This may be foreshadowing what I will call the Sintra Residence route, as Kate dons a talisman when possessed by Xiu Ying. Additionally, Daniel’s eye being replaced by a red gem directly references the owl who also has one of it’s eyes replaced by a red gem.

4. Blood Trail (CARABAS (2011))  10:34 AM, AUG 25 199X

This video begins with our unnamed protagonist losing his cellphone and complaining to his girlfriend, Isabela, that he is unable to find it. At her suggestion, he calls it using their landline, and a strange voice answers. Isabela hands him his cellular, which is shown to have fallen in-between the couch cushions, oblivious to what had just occurred. A bit later, Isabela goes missing, and the protagonist visits her apartment to investigate just to find nothing. He then goes on to visit a medium who confirms Isabela is dead, and instructs the protagonist to call her as soon as he leaves his house the following day. Once he does, the medium tells him that in order to find Isabela’s body, he must re-enter his house, which has now changed. He follows a trail of blood to Isabel’s wrapped up body and begins to unravel her just to be chased away by someone in a tiger mask. The medium reveals to him that this masked figure is apart of him, and the protagonist discovers that this is a result of the hypnosis he undertook to quit smoking.

Though interesting, the connections between this short film and the plot of Yuppie Psycho are practically nonexistent. A character in this film wears a devil’s mask, and one of the lines said by the protagonist- “now I feel her presence more strongly”- is quoted in another Videoclub Misterio tape, Apparition, but that is about as far as it goes.

5. The Weary Human Face 18:54 AM, OCT 16 199X

I cannot find the source of this video on the Marta Sosa YouTube channel, and I cannot personally find any connections to Yuppie Psycho’s plot in the footage shown in-game, so I will leave this as is.

6. Apparition 22:22 AM, JUL 16 199X

I believe this tape takes several shots from the other videos on the YouTube channel, so I cannot pin down a single one. Still, I believe this tape is about Atia Moeta, due to the title and the religious imagery. Also, the statue shown in this video appears to be Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is the inspiration for Atia Moeta’s design.

7. Fired (YOU HAVE CHOSEN DOOR NUMBER 2 (Ha elegido la puerta número 2) - 2008) 08:01 AM, MAY 1 199X

This video is the shortest on the channel, so there is not much to be said about it’s plot. It shows a man holding a gun to the head of a woman dancing in a cat mask. Once he lowers his gun, the woman does one more dance before holding her own gun to his head. It could be said that the short’s theme of choosing incorrectly somehow relates to Yuppie Psycho, but that seems like a stretch.

8. Office Party (VAMPIRE PRISON (Santiago de Sangre) - 2007) 23:06 AM, APR 31 199X

The city of Santiago de Compostela serves as a prison for vampires. Gabriel, the main male seen in this film, is a vampire forced to live in Santiago de Compostela, and he has seduced a woman named Gabriel. He invites her to a costume party with the promise she will finally get to see the paintings he has talked to her about with the intention of turning her into a vampire. Once he tries to get her to drink his blood, she wounds him, and steals a stone responsible for protecting him against the holy rains of Santiago. As he chases her outside to ask her why she has done this, Gabriel reveals that she is a knight tasked with carrying out the laws of the city.

This short film is very interesting, but once again has no real connection to Yuppie Psycho.

9. Mr. Fileto (PARABARA - 2011) 00:00 AM, OCT 31 201X

PARABARA is introduced as an animated educational series that follows the adventures of a robot (Robo-chan), a blue dog (Perrichopin), a tangerine (Pipo), and a duck with a horse’s head (Mr. Fileto). In this episode, you learn the backstories of Perrichopin and Mr. Fileto as the four go on a quest for gold.

…This is not exactly relevant to Yuppie Psycho. In the description of the video titled MR. FILETO 10 HOURS, Sosa (I assume) writes that her cats are fans of the series. This might explain why this Videoclub Misterio tape exists in the first place.

10. Mom & Dad (FISHEADED (Cabeza de pescado) - 2008)  18:54 AM, MAY 02 197X

A child seemingly dissatisfied with this mother forcing him to eat fish conjures up a robotic figure which also tells him to eat his fish. Once the boy’s mother returns to the room, the boy now has a fish for a head. I am sure there is more symbolic meaning considering the description provided, but that is the video at face value.

The Videoclub Misterio tape specifically focuses on the scenes with the mother and father behind the closed door, so it is fair to assume this tape is meant to reference João Sintra and Xiu Ying.

hi! i apologize for the wait. it took me a while to get through all of these videos and compare them to the in-game tapes… but i am glad to have done so. ^^ i highly recommend visiting the youtube channel and watching these short films for yourself- they are very interesting and worth the watch, i think! this was a request from a while ago. i hope the requester gets to finally see this…

HEXENHAMMER

hexenhammer is a real witchcraft treatise written in 1486. it’s original title is “malleus maleficarum”, which roughly translates into “hammer of witches”.

Full Title: Malleus Maleficarum

Alternate Titles: Hexenhammer, Hammer of Witches

Author(s):  Heinrich Kramer (possibly Jacob Sprenger)

Language: Latin

Year Written: 1486

Year Published: 1487

Hexenhammer elevates sorcery to the criminal status of heresy and recommends that secular courts prosecute it as such. It further suggests torture to effectively obtain confessions and the death penalty as the only certain remedy against the evils of witchcraft. At the time of it’s publication, heretics were frequently punished to be burned alive at the stake, and Hexenhammer encouraged the same treatment for witches. The book has had a strong influence on culture for many centuries.

Jacob Sprenger’s name was added as an author beginning in 1519, thirty-three years after the book’s first publication and twenty-four years after Sprenger’s death, but the veracity of this later addition has been questioned by many historians for various reasons. Kramer wrote Hexenhammer following his expulsion from Innsbruck by the local bishop, due to charges of illegal behavior against Kramer himself, and because of his obsession with the sexual habits of one of the accused, Helena Scheuberin, which led to the tribunal members to suspend the trial.

The book was later used by royal courts during the renaissance, and contributed to the increasingly brutal prosecutions during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

MAIN CONTENTS OF HEXENHAMMER

  1. Justification
  2. Papal Bull
  3. Approbation by professors of theology at the University of Cologne
  4. Table of Contents
  5. The Main Texts (divided into three parts)

Justification: In this part, it is briefly explained that prevalence of sorcery is a method of Satan’s final assault and motivated the authors to write Hexenhammer.

“Lucifer attacks through these heresies at that time in particular, when the evening of the world declines towards its setting and the evil of men swells up, since he knows in great anger, as John bares witness in the Book of Apocalypse, that he has little time remaining. Hence, he has also caused a certain unusual heretical perversity to grow up in the land of the Lord- a heresy, I say, of sorceresses, since it is to be designated by the particular sex over which he is known to have power [women].”

Papal Bull: Copies of Hexenhammer contain a reproduction of a papal bull known as Summis Desiderantes Affectibus that is addressed to Heinrich Institoris and Jacob Sprenger. According to it, Pope Innocent VIII acknowledges that sorceresses are real and harmful through their involvement in the acts of Satan.

According to the date on the document, the papal bull had been issued in 1484, two years before Hexenhammer was finished. Therefore, it is not an endorsement of a specific final text of Hexenhammer. Instead, its inclusion implicitly legitimizes the handbook by providing general confirmation of the reality of witchcraft and full authority to Sprenger and Institoris in their teachings and proceedings.

Approbation: This part of Hexenhammer is titled “The Approbation of the Following Treatise and the Signatures Thereunto of the Doctors of the Illustrious University of Cologne Follows in the Form of a Public Document” and contains the unanimous approval of Hexenhammer by all the doctors of the theological faculty of the University of Cologne with inclusion of confirmatory testimony by present witnesses.

Text of approbation mentions that during proceedings Institoris had a letter from the newly crowned king of the Romans, Maximillian, which is summarized in the approbation: “[Maximillion I] takes these inquisitors under his complete protection, ordering and commanding each and every subject of the Roman Empire to render all favor and assistance to these inquisitors and otherwise to act in the manner that is more fully contained and included in the letter.”

The approbation consists of a preamble and is followed by a resolution in two parts, which I will not be listing here due to length and general irrelevance.

Main Text: Hexenhammer asserts that three elements are necessary for witchcraft: the evil intentions of the witch, the help of the devil, and the permission of God. The treatise is divided into three sections. the first section is aimed at clergy and tries to refute critics who deny the reality of witchcraft, thereby hindering its prosecution.

The second section describes the actual forms of witchcraft and its remedies. The third section is to assist judges confronting and combating witchcraft, and to aid the inquisitors by removing the burden from them.

According to Kramer, this concept of sorcery is characterized by the conviction that those guilty engage in six activities:

  1. A pact entered into the devil (and concomitant apostasy from Christianity).
  2. Sexual relations with the devil.
  3. Aerial flight, usually for the purpose of attending:
  4. An assembly presided over by Satan himself (at which initiates entered into the pact, and incest and promiscuous sex were engaged in by the attendees).
  5. The practice of maleficent magic.
  6. The slaughter of babies.

BACK TO YUPPIE PSYCHO: WAS SINTRA RIGHT?

In Yuppie Psycho, Sintra lists a few things Hexenhammer supposedly says, but some of what she says is only half-true, or do not appear in Hexenhammer at all.

1. Witches can only be female.

Though the book uses both “succubi” and “incubi” to refer to witches, it is explicitly stated that only women are capable of becoming witches. I am certain this is rooted in misogyny, but it’s what the book says.

2. Witches ride on broomsticks.

This claim is true, but is lacking in a few details: witches specifically use broomsticks that they have anointed to the limbs of children they have killed. It is also mentioned that witches can use chairs (also anointed to the limbs of dead children) instead of broomsticks. This was probably removed due to how graphic it is, and because our witch in-game is child-like.

3. In order to become a witch, a woman must drink the devil’s blood.

Hexenhammer never mentions the drinking of the devil’s blood; it does state that the devil “loves blood and the pouring of blood”. The usage of blood is required for certain spells and rituals but typically comes from babies or some animal. This may be a reference to the Devil’s Blood cocktail.

4. Witches can only be killed by fire or the Athame Dagger.

Once again, this is true, but Kramer believes witches can also be killed by drowning. Drowning and burning were common witch execution methods.

5.  Witches often make their lairs in places that have a deep connection to their lives.

6.  Witches have familiars.

This is not stated by Sintra, but is present in-game. The book describes witches turning men into crows, but does not mention familiars. This was most likely incorporated from popular media, which stems from Pierre Riffard’s ideals and books on familiar spirits.

let it be said that this is not a criticism against the creators of yuppie psycho, and rather me pointing out the differences for fun. i consider the real hexenhammer and the in-game hexenhammer to be two different books, and therefore, i believe they have different information in them. in the yuppie psycho universe, what sintra says is more accurate than the information in the real life book!
while i have seen images of the yuppie handbook circulating online, i am withholding from posting a timeline of the character’s birthdays until i get my own copy. ^^

MARTA SOSA YOUTUBE CHANNEL

As I mentioned in the Videoclub Misterio post, there are other videos on Marta Sosa’s YouTube channel that cannot be found in-game. All of these videos are related to Yuppie Psycho in some way, so I find it appropriate to mention them here.

do_not_watch_01.avi

Due to the fact we are shown multiple screens which vary in subject, this video’s visuals are a bit hard to explain. The most important part of it is the words that accompany each screen: “Brian, you have to come back. We found another tape and it’s not ours.” The description of the video is in binary, and translates to “BRIAN HELP WRONG MEMORY LOST DUPLICATE”.

This is the first teaser for the DLC released on this channel.

The Adventures of Mappy & Sosa (s01 e01)

This marks the first episode of Sosa’s series The Adventures of Mappy & Sosa. The premise is self-explanatory: the series follows the adventures of Mappy and Sosa. The first episode is rather short, and features Sosa becoming frightened by a coworker dressed as a witch for Halloween. Sosa hides behind Mappy, who defeats the witch with laser beams (which of course come from her eyes).

Notably, the witch coworker looks like Kate. This only strengthens the connection between Kate and the witch we see in-game and does not really add anything new. I do not think there is a “hidden meaning” here, either. This series is most likely on the channel to give more character to Sosa and Mappy, or just as silly little extras.

The Adventures of Mappy & Sosa (s01 e03)

Sosa says in the description of this video that she could not upload the second episode because it became corrupt for an unknown reason. Because of this, we are lacking a bit of context.

This episode begins with Mappy and Sosa in a backrooms-esque area, with Sosa relieved that a curse has been lifted. Sosa begins to speak to Mr. Devil (presumably telepathically) and tells her to go back to “the home”, which Sosa assumes to mean her own home. After Sosa convinces Mappy to come with her, the duo take a trip to look for Sosa’s house. The following clips are real footage said to be taken by Mappy of a city and an abandoned location.

The Adventures of Mappy & Sosa (s01 e04)

This episode is said to be the season finale, and shows that Mappy and Sosa have somehow gotten separated on their search for Sosa’s home. While Sosa calls out for Mappy, Mappy has realized that the location they are in is not Sosa’s house, and that this entire thing was a trap laid out by Mr. Devil. Mr. Devil says the two will never find their way out of the haunted house they are now in, but Mappy’s years at Sintracorp have made her a “cop-out expert.” Mappy quickly finds Sosa and leads her back to Sintracorp. The two agree that the safest place to be is at their job.

A scream can be heard after Sosa and Mappy say that they will never leave Sintracorp ever again. This might imply that this was made before the witch was dealt with, meaning that this desire to never leave Sintracorp is due to the witch’s influence.

Cancun Beach and Pool Fun

The description of this video states that this is supposed to be footage of Sosa and Mappy’s vacation at the beach, but Tiki-Taka (the security boss) has taken over the video without Sosa’s knowledge. He states that he has run out of hard drive space on his computer and was looking for files to delete when he found two folders he had never seen before—"4-5-22-9-12" (DEVIL) and “8-15-13-5” (HOME). Folder 8-15-13-5 is password protected, so he cannot share the contents of it just yet. The other folder, though, features an edited version of the devil’s rebirth cutscene. The video ends with Tiki-Taka begging for Brian to save him.

A robotic voice says this over the footage: “In imagine, or a sentinel, major-general! Is mysterious pledged. Which of lock clouds. Go anteroom, you maddening are boot.” I have no idea what the words in the video mean or if they mean anything at all. I have tried to decipher them to no avail.

What is obvious is that this is a teaser for the Yuppie Psycho DLC.

Pelicans in the Beach

Once again, Sosa is under the impression that she is sharing footage from her and Mappy’s vacation only to be hijacked by Tiki-Taka. He states that he has been obsessed with the 8-15-13-5 folder and is convinced it is a breach in security. While off-screen, he has been trying different passwords only to one day find the password gone. Inside the folder, he finds six different files. Only the first three are shown before the video switches back to Sosa’s footage:

  1. The first file shows multiple scenes from the DLC, some of which are edited to contain text such as “the job is not done” and “go back to your workplace”. It ends by showing the release date of the DLC.
  2. The second file is mixed with clips of the Sintra residence in-game and actual black-and-white footage of a similar home. A crying child can be heard in the background.
  3. The third file shows a man wearing a suit and sunglasses in what appears to be a closet, mouthing something in typical Videoclub Misterio style. He is inaudible, but there is a distorted voiceover.

Afterlife Pharmaceuticals

This video is formatted like an advertisement for a pharmaceutical company, complete with a robotic voiceover highlighting the scientific advancements of the company. The link in the description of this video leads to the steam page for a future Baroque Decay game of the same title. It is safe to assume this is a teaser for the said game.

i excluded the very last video on the youtube channel titled “a game about us?” because it is very clear it is an advertisement and does not add anything new to the game. though, seeing the mr. devil plushie turn around in the mirror is still amusing.

BEWITCHED (CUTSCENE 09)

i wanted to make a smaller post covering something quite minor (but still interesting) in the bewitched cutscene, the one about kate’s dream. i may make other posts like this for the other cutscenes…

This cutscene starts with someone off-screen pouring blood from a teapot into a matching teacup, with this being a reference to the act of drinking the devil’s blood and the tea set being the one found in the Sintra residence.

The scene with Kate’s eyes being covered by white lilies could be referencing two things:

1. When brought to funerals, white lilies are said to symbolize both the deceased’s return to innocence and the departure of their soul. It can then be reasoned that the white lilies here are meant to symbolize the departing of Kate’s soul and the return of Xiu Ying’s (the mother of Rei Sintra and Domori) soul. It may explain the placement of the lilies over Kate’s eyes, around the same spot the talisman is placed.

2. Though more of a stretch, Saint Catherine of Siena is traditionally pictured with two blooming white lilies. Notably, St. Catherine is a patron saint against fires and miscarriages, and she may be Kate’s namesake.

Additionally, this scene is similar to one featured in Baroque Decay’s previous game, The Count Lucanor.

YUPPIE PSYCHO: A COMPLETE TIMELINE

since i received the collector’s edition, i thought it would be a good time to type out the yuppie timeline! this is ordered from past to present, and does not include much elaboration on events or in-game evidence. if you are confused about a certain event or want to know where i found a certain date, please ask! i am always happy to share.

1981 — Xiu Ying begins to hire witch hunters; Hugo is hired as a janitor as well.

1983 — Xiu Ying dies.

1983, December — The sixth floor in the Sintracorp building is closed. Presumably, every Sintra android remaining is destroyed. (spader possibly began his contracted work with sintracorp around this time.)

1995, possibly— TIKITAKA becomes chief of security. (in one of his notes, tikitaka says he has been connected to the system for 58 weeks. this is a year and six weeks. the note is undated, so i merely used brian’s starting year as the base point.)

1996, either December 2nd or February 12th — Sintracorp sends a letter to Brian Pasternack, saying he has secured a position in their ranks.

1996, a week later (either December 9th or February 19th) — Anthony Chapman Jr., Catherine Hicks, and Brian Pasternack arrive at Sintracorp.

THE EXHIBITION

while the exhibition is indeed a stark contrast compared to other rooms at sintracorp, this section is more dedicated to the paintings rather than the room itself.

All of the paintings on the ninth floor were made by Suguru Tanaka, a popular surrealist horror artist. He is credited in Yuppie Psycho’s crew and was announced to have joined the team on Baroque Decay’s twitter. Additionally, on the brochure given to Brian, Tanaka is credited as the artist for the exhibition.

The designs of the receptionists on the ninth floor are directly modeled after one of his paintings that do not appear in the exhibition, titled “hospitality”.

The brochure Brian is given titles the exhibition as "The blood of the devil". The picture on it is the painting the hidden meaning of numbers with the leviathan's symbol over it (i will make a post for this later).

Paintings in the right lane, in order from bottom to top, left to right.

Paintings in the left lane, in order from bottom to top, left to right.

it is unclear to me what exactly these paintings are supposed to mean, or why they are present in the game to begin with. some of these pieces have titles that correlate with in-game themes or topics, but i am not exactly qualified to find meaning in surrealist paintings. also, sorry for the poor quality! all of these paintings can be found on the linked tumblr.

the exhibition photos were taken from manlybadasshero's playthrough.
