The findings can shed light on an evolutionary adaptation that enabled the human brain to grow to modern-day sizes. “Humans evolved in equatorial Africa, where the sun is overhead for much of the day, year in and year out,” says Nina Jablonski, professor of anthropology at Penn State. “Here the scalp and top of the head receive far more constant levels of intense solar radiation as heat. “We wanted to understand how that affected the evolution of our hair. We found that tightly curled hair allowed humans to stay cool and actually conserve water.” The researchers used a thermal manikin—a human-shaped model that uses electric power to simulate body heat and allows scientists to study heat transfer between human skin and the environment—and human-hair wigs to examine how diverse hair textures affect heat gain from solar radiation.

hey netizens! i'm not sure how many people are aware, but youtube's been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can't be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate

BUT, if you're a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard (under My Filters) to get rid of it!

youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

Chinese Song Recs!

I’ve been listening to a lot more Chinese music lately. Since many Chinese music streaming services like QQ音乐 don’t work well outside of China, I’ve found that Chinese music can be somewhat inaccessible. If you’re looking to listen to more Chinese/Taiwanese music, check out my recommendations!

  • 情景剧 - 陈粒 A very dramatic, explosive, rock opera-esque song. Also Meng Meiqi covered it on the Masked Singer.
  • 芳草地 - 陈粒 This song truly makes me feel at peace, like I am lying in a meadow~ It’s by far my fav Chen Li song, can’t recommend it enough.
  • 我的秘密 - GEM/邓紫棋 A true pop classic. The QCYN2 cover reminded me how much I love this song. A bonus is that it should be pretty easy for intermediate learners to understand.
  • 另一个童话 - GEM/邓紫棋 Definitely an underrated GEM song. It makes me feel very hopeful/inspired.
  • 再见只是陌生人 - 庄心妍/Ada Zhuang A little dark and brooding, a little heart-wrenching. Love love love the little guitar solo.

Ref Recs for Whump Writers

Violence: A Writer’s Guide This is not about writing technique. It is an introduction to the world of violence. To the parts that people don’t understand. The parts that books and movies get wrong. Not just the mechanics, but how people who live in a violent world think and feel about what they do and what they see done.

Hurting Your Characters: HURTING YOUR CHARACTERS discusses the immediate effect of trauma on the body, its physiologic response, including the types of nerve fibers and the sensations they convey, and how injuries feel to the character. This book also presents a simplified overview of the expected recovery times for the injuries discussed in young, otherwise healthy individuals.

Body Trauma: A writer’s guide to wounds and injuries. Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Research what happens in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts to bring added realism to your stories and novels.

10 B.S. Medical Tropes that Need to Die TODAY…and What to Do Instead: Written by a paramedic and writer with a decade of experience, 10 BS Medical Tropes covers exactly that: clichéd and inaccurate tropes that not only ruin books, they have the potential to hurt real people in the real world.

Maim Your Characters: How Injuries Work in Fiction: Increase Realism. Raise the Stakes. Tell Better Stories. Maim Your Characters is the definitive guide to using wounds and injuries to their greatest effect in your story. Learn not only the six critical parts of an injury plot, but more importantly, how to make sure that the injury you’re inflicting matters

Blood on the Page: This handy resource is a must-have guide for writers whose characters live on the edge of danger. If you like easy-to-follow tools, expert opinions from someone with firsthand knowledge, and you don’t mind a bit of fictional bodily harm, then you’ll love Samantha Keel’s invaluable handbook

Reminders for the Anxious/Depressed Creatives

  • You’re more than what you make.
  • Your productivity does not determine your value.
  • It’s okay to do nothing sometimes.
  • Not everything you do has to result in a product.
  • Not everything you make has to be important, significant, or even good.
  • You can make things just for yourself.
  • You can keep secrets for yourself, whether it’s not posting some of your projects or not sharing your techniques.
  • You’re allowed to say no.
  • You’re allowed to rest.

2023 Updates:

  • Inspiration doesn’t cure burnout. Rest cures burnout.
  • People will wait for you; take your time and come back when you are ready.
  • It’s okay to scrap projects that no longer excite you, even if other people like them.
  • It’s delightful and excellent to be openly proud of your work.
  • Afford yourself the same gentleness that you would afford another creative - negative self-talk is counterproductive and frankly cruel.
  • Self-indulgent creations are satisfying to others as well; don’t apologize for your own pleasure.
  • Actually, don’t apologize for your work at all.

obligatory welcome guide for redditors

A lot of the guides I've seen don't actually seem to understand how reddit works in comparison to tumblr so

  • your blog is basically your own small subreddit. some people curate this heavily to fit a theme, like a sub, most people don't
  • reblogs are culturally equivilant to upvotes but functionally equvilant to crossposting
  • there is an algorithm. it sucks and nobody uses it. turn it off in settings. everything is generally chronological
  • likes are functionally equivilant to saving a post
  • you've probably already seen this but change your icon and put something in your bio or people WILL assume you're a bot. personal info not required
  • generally, anything you would put as a comment on a thread should go in the tags or the replies of a post. only add comments in reblogs if you want it to become part of the base post
  • tags are mostly equivilant to flairs, used for organization and commentary
  • your dashboard is an aggregation of everyone you follow
  • there is an r/all equivilant(trending page) but it sucks and nobody uses it
  • our search also sucks. your best bet is using tumblr.com/tagged/[TAG] and not /search
  • there are no mods
  • by extension, reporting something doesn't put it in front of the mods, it sends it to staff, who may or may not do anything(usually they don't)
  • there is no karma, there are no karma limits. anyone can reblog anything, comment/reply to anything, or post in any tag
  • "reposting"(reblogging) old content doesn't matter. people can and will reblog the same post multiple times, including in a row
  • CAVEAT. reposting someones art(NOT reblogging, making a new post) is a dick move. i know this is commonplace on fandom subs but its not necessary here. everything you post should be [OC] unless you are reblogging. or posting shitty memes
  • we have our own sitelore, you'll pick it up
  • (though im not opposed to bringing some over from reddit)
  • our app also sucks. we do not have third party apps and any that claim to be are scams. sorry
  • for desktop, most people use the XKit Rewritten extension for QoL improvements and to revert shitty aesthetic updates, much like old.reddit
  • we have no idea where the porn rules are at either. add a mature content flag to anything you'd get fired for looking at at work, that's about it

finally, from the bottom of my heart, fuck u/spez

Anonymous asked:

You don’t own fanfics. They’re inherently public domain because they aren’t your IP. Agree or disagree with AI, there are no grounds for “protection” from AI because it isn’t your IP to begin with. That’s what you chose when you chose this medium

Oh dear.

Okay, you get an answer, because at least you took the effort to write your ask out properly, even if you are hiding behind the grey, sunglassed circle.

Do I, or any fanfic author for that matter, have any legal claims to our work? No, not really, no. (Although if someone took a fic, filed off the serial number--deleted the fandom specific elements--, and then had it published for financial gain, yeah, that would be a case.)

BUT

Fandoms are built on a social contract that says we respect each others work, the effort people put into their art. We don't steal or disrespect the work of our peers. By feeding people's fanworks to AI you both steal and disprect it, and we need to make people realize that before it's too late--before fandom falls apart, because there will be no more real, actual fanworks.

Disrepectfully,

Orlissa

(i can't believe I have to say this)

Also this is not true. You do in fact have the copyright to the specific writing you did in a fic, because that's not how copyright law works. Like this is not a grey area.

People who write IP content for corporations give up their copyright on a contractual basis--the company wants writing they can sell about characters/settings they own without getting entangled in royalty obligations etc, so they hire people. Who sign contracts saying they don't own what they write as part of that job.

That's why you don't own Star Wars stuff you wrote for Disney; you specifically agreed not to own it.

Writing for IP you don't own leaves you in a position where you can't legally monetize it (without taking out the Owned parts ad rebranding), but it absolutely does not automatically cede or void copyright. That is super not a thing.

SUPER not a thing, I cannot say this enough.

I can't sell my Batman fic, but neither can DC Comics without my duly authorized consent. Because they own Batman, but not the prose I composed about him.

Do not perform that kind of massive corporate overreach for them. Holy shit. Do they not own enough.

It’s fascinating that this misconception of copyright still exists. Haven’t we all seen the posts on here where authors beg fans to please not send them fanfic of their works? They’re not doing that because they feel like it, they do that because fans legally own their words and ideas, and an author who takes them even unintentionally can in fact end up in real legal trouble for taking something that’s not theirs. It doesn’t matter whether they own the canon.

This. Astonishing indeed that anon would attempt to upbraid somebody on copyright issues when they understand them so poorly.

Everyone gets “The 90s” look wrong so let’s fix it

If you weren’t here for part one, lemme sum it up real fast:

Okay, all up to speed? We’re being served 80s throwback stuff with the serial numbers scratched off, re-labeled as yo totally 90s. What we’ve got now isn’t completely wrong, but I’m telling you, there’s so much gold left unmined.

As we saw in part one with Memphis Milano, these things get messy. Trends don’t start and end neatly every ten years. The first wave of 90s throwback attempts focused on the early part of the decade, and nobody since really pushed to represent the other seven years. Well, if you really wanna do something, I guess you gotta do it yourself.

I have suggestions. Get your flannel ready, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover.

Everyone gets “The 90s” look wrong and I hate it

Couple years ago I saw these two board games at the store back to back. Well, not saw them per se, but ya know. Spied them out of the corner of my eye. And for a moment without reading the text, I couldn’t tell you which was which decade at first. Funny. Either they were in a rush to get these out the door or they wanted their throwback trivia game boxes to look uniform. I didn’t think too much of it.

Only, from then on I started seeing it MORE. Every time someone markets a 90s or 80s throwback…

Goddammit they’re identical! What??! How did we let this happen? As a 90s survivor and a designer, this drives me up a wall.

Look, I know I’m late to the party to complain about “the 90s look” when we’re just starting to get sick of the Y2K nostalgia train. But c’mon, the 90s were not The 80s: Part Two™

Trust me when I say that we weren’t all wearing neon trapezoids up until the year 2000. The 90s look being peddled is so specific to the tail end of the 80s and an early early part of the 90s - a part of the 90s when it wouldn’t stop being the 80s. This is Memphis design being conflated with the wrong decade.

Keep reading for a long ass graphic design history lesson and pictures of old soda and fast food.

ICYMI, there was fear that companies were scraping public AO3 fics to train their AI without the consent of AO3 or its users. That fear has been confirmed.

AO3 has written about what they’re doing (and what they’re not able to do), and they recommend restricting your work to AO3 registered users only. [Instructions here]

This gross misuse of the archive by techbros is why I’ve locked down my fics for the foreseeable future. I recommend the rest of you do the same.

@lordoftherazzles made a quick guide for ao3 authors to lock all their works at once for registered users only here!

Someone recently messaged me worried I’d deleted all my fic - it’s all still there, it’s just locked to A03 because of this and other skimming instances.

Please note that many fanfic authors are locking their stories so that they are only accessible to registered Ao3 users.

They’re still there at Ao3. The authors have made this choice to protect their work from misuse/AI scanning.

IF YOU HAVE/PLAN ON MAKING AN ALBINO CHARACTER...

…and for some reason can’t be bothered to do any research about it, here are a few things about albinism that’ll help you make an actual albino character, and not one of the “albino” characters (aka white-haired red-eyed not-actually-albino characters) that you might find helpful! (And if you want more details you can check out the wiki page)

(I don’t claim to be an expert on albinism, but I think it’s safe to say that I’ve become pretty familiar with it because my brother’s albino, and I’m really tired of seeing people make “albino” characters just for their appearance and don’t realize that there are a lot of other not-so-great things that come with it.)

  • Their eyes are not red. They lack pigments, which makes the iris paler and thus, the retina is more visible. People talk tend to talk about albinos having red eyes like how people have brown/blue/green/etc. eyes, but that isn’t the case. They can appear quite “red,” but they’re typically light blue. The retina might show through to give a pink outline around the iris (this is the case for my brother). In photos, they almost always have red eye in photos
  • Their eyes are sensitive to the light (photosensitivity). Your character should have some sort of eye protection (shades, hat, etc.)
  • They’re very likely to have visual problems (I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a case where they don’t). They need to be up close to read things and probably needs a magnifying glass to make it easier. It’s like when people need to wear glasses, except even the strongest glasses won’t make their vision 20/20. Glasses can, however, relieve stress on the eyes. (My brother in particular has something called nystagmus, which is constant involuntary eye movement and is part of his bad eyesight)
  • They’re way more likely to get sunburn, which makes them way more likely to get skin cancer. If they’re out in the sun, they’ll wear sunscreen, and I mean the strong kind (my brother uses SPF 50 Shiseido sunscreen. I’m not kidding about the skin. If my brother misses one spot on his skin, that one part will burn if he’s out in the sun too long. Seriously, he burns a lot.)
  • They probably won’t play ball sports. If your giving your albino character a hobby/passion, it’s probably best involve throwing/catching fast-moving things or being out in the sun a lot. Y’know, because of the whole eyesight and sunburn thing. This isn’t to say an albino can’t play sports altogether. It’s just not the best thing to do professionally and/or competitively.
  • People stare. Depending on your story’s society and the people’s take on seeing somebody who looks drastically different, this might be something worth mentioning, and it might happen often. If your character is with friends/family/anybody who would be bothered, those other characters might do something about it (personally, I like to stare really intently at the people staring at my brother until they stop).

Remember that albinism is the lack of pigments (and not just “oh cool you have white hair and skin!”), and that can lead to a lot of things that will mostly definitely affect the way your character does things. They aren’t restricted from everything - it’s just that they do things differently.

My brother can still play video games (I don’t really know how he manages to play multi-player and still kick everybody’s ass, but he does), he does great in school, he’s an amazing pianist (ARCT/grade 8 depending on what country you’re in, not sure if there’s other grading scales), and he doesn’t need a walking stick or a guide dog (though they’ve been offered before).

But sometimes he asks me to read things for him, or he’ll ask the bus driver where they’re heading so he knows he’s on the right bus, or ask to make sure he’s eating what he should be eating (and not a wad of spice or something).

TL;DR Akise Aru from Mirai Nikki is not albino. Allen Walker from D. Gray Man is not albino. Nagito Komaeda from Dangan Ronpa is not albino.

White hair does not mean albino.

An actual example of an albino character is Pete White from The Venture Bros. It’s shown that his albinism affects his life in various ways, such as having to protect his skin and eyes form the sun.

Basically, don’t make your character albino just because you think the white skin and white hair and supposed-red-eyes looks cool. Albinism is much more than that, and it will definitely affect your character’s life. Just like any other character, people with any type of disorder (albinism is congenital) are NOT accessories.
