Okay but counterpoint: I'm a religious Jew and we don't proselytize in general, but it would never occur to me to start when someone is at their lowest. Even to attempt to comfort them. That would feel weird and predatory and opportunistic.

You know what I do to comfort someone in crisis (I thing that I regularly do professionally, btw)?

I listen to them.

Because what I find comforting doesn't matter. It's not about me or my beliefs or even G-d. It's about seeing the full humanity of the person in front of me and helping them in whatever way I can. It would be an averah (a transgression) to do otherwise.

Evangelizing forms of Xtianity and their values do not have a monopoly on religion, and so no, I'm not going to go out of my way to 'share' my [deeply important and comforting to me] religion with someone in crisis; I'm going to listen and offer help because they're a person and that's what G-d put us on this earth to do, is to help one another.
