at 22 you went to a new city and got caught up in all that buzzing neon. accidentally fell in love with a girl with a face like mine but a name that’s easier to pronounce. and isn’t that just the way things go? we sacrifice what’s right for what’s easy. what looks the most dazzling in an otherwise bleak & stripped town. at 22 all the love songs feel new again, and not because of you. got a boy with a heart buzzing like neon. spun me so much starlight, turned this place you left me in glow-in-the-dark. until my eyes could handle the light again. filled my sky with birds again. didn’t complain once when i let them into the house. when i treated them like old friends. brought me every sunflower he ran across. left my room swimming in yellow. at 22 i saw our differences for the first time. you tried to swallow every bright thing you found. i tried to preserve it.
