REBLOG IF YOUR BLOG IS A SAFE SPACE FOR AROMANTIC PEOPLE AND IF YOU THINK THEY ARE VALID

I want to see how many people actually are willing to say this and not just act like it

One of my least favourite dialogue tropes is when a man tells a woman, “You can’t do that” or “I wouldn’t do that if I were you” and she says, “Why? Because I’m a woman and therefore too weak to handle this/can’t take care of myself?” or something to that effect and the guy replies with, “No, because everyone who tried that ended up with a bullet in their brain” or something equally reasonable and not gender-specific that paints him as the rational not sexist guy and the woman as an irrational paranoid feminist who searches for sexism in everything. This whole scenario is built on the idea that sexism is over and women’s fears and suspicions don’t have a leg to stand on. It’s also self-congratulatory pseudofeminism bc it’s supposed to make the viewer/reader/listener feel that in this specific work of fiction women are treated respectfully and as equal with men.

huh.. never thought of it like that

But, what if the male character isn’t sexist? I meam…their fictional sure but…I’m not sure how to phrase this

Its not a question of the character themselves- its how the writers are portraying them. The way this trope plays out, the whole moment revolves around the woman looking foolish for assuming that there is sexism happening. She is characterized as being irrational, jumping to conclusions, even insecure. While the dude is characterized as the calm, rational one.

It is a trope that specifically works by taking a woman standing up to sexism and saying “haha it wasnt actually sexist at all! Isnt calling out sexism foolish and silly. Thats what you get for assuming that men are sexist!”

I have the same reaction with homophobic jokes set up like this. Like the whole “you can’t marry a woman”, “why bc you think its wrong” “no we haven’t found you the right dress yet silly!” Or stuff along those lines.

It feels like someone setting up to punch you and then you duck and the person goes “haha, i wasn’t gonna punch you at all, why would you duck? You shouldnt just assume someone’s gonna deck you because they have their fists up.”

saw someone once describe those kinds of “jokes” as winding up they’re going to punch you and then laughing when you flinch.

I can see the frustration with this joke, I get it a lot to and it’s so irritating, not only does it embarrass the woman but it usually puts me off of the character as well.

But I would also like to point out, like most tropes, there are good and bad ways of portraying this trope. And I’ve read some of the good ones where it is set up that it’s not trying to embarrass/humiliate the female character for assuming things but introducing the male character as some one different or understanding. For example; let’s say there’s an earlier scene with a different male character that goes, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”, girl “why?”, “A delicate woman such as yourself shouldn’t have to deal with such trifling things, etc, etc, insert unintended sexist thing here.” And that was the set up to show that was the norm for this character, then comes the trope with a reasonable explanation from so and so and it’s like a breath of fresh air. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”, “Why because I’m a girl?”, “No because I’m pretty sure that thing is about to collapse in on itself if a feather were to land on it.”, “Thank GOD I don’t have to deal with another egotistical sexist bastard” girl storms ahead, guy confusion “Your… welcome?”

I guess that last example isn’t really the norm, but when the woman reacts to that at the end of the trope I always thinks it’s hilarious, especially if the male character has no idea how to react now.

Point is, the trope can be very frustrating, especially recently when used, but that doesn’t mean I think the trope is awful or all dead so to speak. It can still be funny without being offensive to a single gender as a whole.

A character can still be a great character without being a good person.

In fact, some of the best characters are terrible people.

Because a character’s worth should be based on how complex and interesting they are, not their morality if they were real.

Hey, guys. I wanted to just take a moment to talk about how racial inequalities can affect education opportunities and the mental state of college students here in Florida. One of the many nicknames we have for our country is The Land of Opportunity, yet there are students who struggle to gain their opportunity, even if they’re born in America. Their struggles don’t always stem from financial issues. What is sometimes overlooked is that in school, students of different races are easily picked on or are overlooked out of bias and even racism.

A potent example of an obstacle for students is the lack of DEI since May 2023. According to the College of Arts and Sciences Dean Advisor, Tangela Serls, "‘Students won’t be prepared to perform in a global society. They will be less informed, less empathetic, and less appreciative of differences across humanity." With fellow students less informed, future generations will be less empathetic to others who are different as time moves forward. This can also increase social anxiety to students who fall into different minority group. This could lead to isolation and depression when people feel like they’re being ostracized by their peers. Not only that, but DEI also helped students with their education. Not just socially, but academically as well. According to DEI Bans at Colleges: What Students Should Know, "‘DEI is for students with disabilities, veterans with PTSD, minority students, and students who are New Americans who may need extra help due to language or cultural barriers,’ Laura Lanese, President and CEO of the Inter-University Council of Ohio, an educational association of Ohio’s public universities, wrote in an open letter in May." Without the paid support for those who are either learning, or don’t speak English as a first language no longer have the needed assistance to complete their assignments, which could lead to added stress financially as well as emotionally.

With every problem comes a solution. At HCC (Hillsborough Community College), Students are provided with the tools they need in order to help themselves get on track educationally, mentally, and emotionally through the help of Baycare. Baycare is a Mental Health center fully payed by Hillsborough Community College on all campuses. This help center also has Student-Counselor confidentiality. Baycare has a non-discrimination policy, having a plethora of languages for the student in need to select. With the language options on Baycare’s website, people can feel like they’re number one priority to the Center, and feel more included as a student of Hillsborough Community College. In Additon to Baycare, HCC has Counsilors available to tend to Students' needs while on campus, including mental health care or social issues that may be occurring. There is also the option for Students who witness their peers' mental health declining to take their distressed friend to an advisor. It's important as a Communtiy to be aware of issues that may not affect us directly. Those with friends of different race can take initiative to listen out for phrases that can be ill-perceived. It's also important to pay attention to how our peers and classmates behave. We never know who may need a helping hand to heal.

Calling out to my fellow vamp fans

If you don’t want to participate no big deal

I had to think at first, I couldn’t remember if I started vampire diaries or Buffy the vampire slayer that got me into the vampire mood at first, and then, with help, I remembered it was actually the vampire Downworlders from the Mortal Instruments (Shadowhunters) that got me into it.

It was either fangs or tail. I went with fangs

Was honestly between the claws, eyes, or tail. But I always thought the coolest people were the ones with the strange eyes. Thus I ultimately went with that.

kind of wanna reinforce this here. because i’ve seen ai writing become so popular on tik tok.

ai writing is not okay.

it’s literally theft. just like how ai art steals, ai writing steals. it’s using authors’ very real work to generate whatever you type in. and this also needs to be said as well.

writing is a form of art. fanfiction is a form of literature.

seeing this all over my fyp is REALLY discouraging. fanfic itself is already a labor of love and we love it when you interact. but please do not use ai writing for your fanfic needs when this writing literally steals from fanfic authors.

genuinely don’t know if this post will go around because my interactions outside of hcs are shit, but i hope it does.
