I think Oppenheimer really could’ve been improved by Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer showing a powerpoint presentation of real photos of the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and saying “I did this and I am personally responsible for every person that died in these attacks. I am a bad person who ushered in an era of endless paranoia and vigilance under now very real threat of total global annihilation. And you, having not done any of those things are a good person for condemning me. Also whatever kind of communist you are is the right one and although I was probably a communist i am not that kind.”

i still think an interpretation of hannibal that needs to be done is a silence of the lambs where clarice is a trans woman. specifically not fixing the transmisogyny of the whole buffalo bill plotline and seeing how the transmisogyny first hand impacts the protagonist, clarice, as she is both trying to catch this killer but also having to navigate civilians, the media, and coworkers spewing hatred not directed at her but still negatively impacting her. i really don’t feel like this is a project that cis people could handle though. like there definitely needs to be trans writers and directors and hopefully even producers and definitely the lead actress. i think it would also hit harder if clarice was casted as a woman of color to show how closely related exclusion of women of color and exclusion of trans women are. however i do not think the world is ready for such a piece so i will just. think about it. in my brainmind.

i was just thinking about silence of the lambs today and I hate to say it but I do not think this works. I don't think Silence of the Lambs is recoverable in this way at all, in fact it's a seminal text in the history of negotiation between the police state and white bourgeois women on the purported grounds of mutual interest in repressing (what they both view as) gender-deviant men and perpetuating heterosexuality in the face of its inherent violence. There's a reason the relatively smart Hannibal didn't touch Buffalo Bill at all, and it's that the violent cisheterosexual contract of Silence is load-bearing, it ceases making sense in any other context.

I suppose a recuperative effort could also be made along the lines of, I don't know, desirability, institutional legibility, etc - the clean-cut, middle-class-enough-to-be-an-FBI-agent transsexual Clarice Starling vs. the dangerous DIY freak Buffalo Bill - but at best that would be incoherent and at worst it would perpetuate actual evil that actually exists in the world in much the same way that Silence and the true crime genre it helped reinvigorate did
