Even those who have experienced depression firsthand know how hard it is to translate those feelings into character and motivation. We’ve collected nine books of various genres — both fiction and nonfiction — that depict the complexity of depression in their pages. Not all are wholly positive, but they get at the core of what it means to live with depression.
Mid-week conclusions for the disillusioned:
- Eating ‘clean’ is a privilege.
- It’s scary to experience women and children being punching bags for patriarchy, figuratively and physically.
- It’s not even the disappointment of wasting time, it’s the disappointment in myself for glorifying settling and compromising.
- People fetishize words like ‘thug’ that are systematically used to criminalize people of color, yet remain silent when protestors get called the same.
- Ways in which we show affection, or lack of, is a learned trait.
- Quit demanding your partners to display western forms of intimacy.
- The irony of saying “we are all one race,” AFTER creating the concept of race, then proceeding to build a global social, economic, and political system of white supremacy.
- Mocking accents is normalized racist behavior.

Do better, tech people.
I witnessed this first-hand at the Dane County Regional Airport (Madison, WI) earlier this year. Those soap dispensers flat out ignored the Black woman who was in there at the same time.
Yeah, I had to show the lighter underside of my hands in order to get a couple of sinks to work.
This is real, people.
If you announce your goals to others, you are less likely to make them happen because you lose motivation, studies confirmed.
Never forget that over 2 million people were murdered through the U.S.-led ‘War on Terror.’
