Hey Sue, I’ve been following your tumblr for 5 years now and this may be odd to ask, but I would really appreciate your perspective and advice. It’s been two years since my breakup and I’ve said everything I wanted to tell him, even if he gave me no answer and left me feeling lost and confused. He’s in a relationship now, and it drives me crazy how he crosses my mind, when I probably never crossed his. I saw him one day with his new girlfriend wearing a hairtie around his wrist like he used to wear mine back when we were together, but it hurts to think that it most likely belongs to the person he’s currently with. How do I get over someone I had so much love for even though it ended in a way where we proved that we just weren’t right for each other?

When we enter relationships, when we fall in love, we're committing to feelings that don't disappear even after an end to those relationships.
Whatever emotions are, they and the memory of them stay with us for a long time, sometimes forever.
The idea of 'moving on' is different for everyone, but I would always differentiate it from 'forgetting' even if sometimes it leads to forgetting.
Moving on means accepting the conclusion of a relationship, including how it affected and continues to affect our outlooks on life.
The way that things ended, and the love we felt in a relationship, may mean that we are never able to look at certain people without feeling sadness, nostalgia, grief.
Particularly when we don't receive closure; an explanation of why things ended that makes sense, it becomes very difficult to accept the ending.
If there was a simple remedy for this, much of the world's heartbreak would have already resolved.
But I believe that heartbreak compounds the world - by which I mean it makes the world feel very small - makes us experience life in relation to the object of the heartbreak. Perhaps you can find it in you to see the rest of the world now, separate from him.
His new relationship, his new girlfriend, his thinking or not thinking about you, they are neither affirmations of his moving on nor slights against you. Your worlds have simply moved apart, and it's time for you to start living in your own world instead of reaching for his.
