these are all ladies. 

males look like every other beetle out there, but are the same species. it was a huge mystery for the longest time what the hell a male even looked like, or if there even were males, until they issued a money reward and someone brought in a mating pair. and they couldn’t believe that they were even of the same species because of how different they look.

There’s actually a number of insects who have this particular dimorphism, with “larviform” females! These include bagworm moths, which is why pokemon has wormadam and mothim. It also includes several glowworm beetles and fireflies, and in fact fireflies are closely related to trilobite beetles with the same kind of larval anatomy:

The tiny head on this baby firefly is how it pulls snails out of their shells, constituting most of their diet! Unfortunately nobody’s quite certain what trilobite beetles need to eat; they only live a couple months in captivity and even labs have failed to get captive breeding going. This is unfortunate because of their shrinking habitat and poaching, since they started going viral on the internet in the 2010s people want to try them out as pets or just specimens.

They’re not going to try and “sabotage” queer spaces by saying “hey I don’t have any marginalized orientations or identities but I’m still totally queer”, they’d just say “hey I’m super gay, love people of the same gender”

What, concretely, are you worried about happening? What’s the worst thing that could happen due to inclusivity? Because the worst things that can happen due to gatekeeping are very well-known, and I’m much more scared of that

It’s less that it’s trendy and more like, I like having my queer-only spaces. Also queer is a bad word. All our words are bad words. Bug zappers kill bugs by the thousands. But there’s a problem: They kill the wrong bugs. They are ineffective against mosquitoes and other biting flies, and their otherwise indiscriminate killing can disrupt pollination and generally throw the environment out of balance. Plus, the force of their electrocution can spew a mist of disease-ridden bug parts out into the air. To keep an area free of bugs or to prevent yourself from getting bitten, there are much better alternatives.
