A Queer Kettle of -Ish

@aqueerkettleofish

I'm a middle-aged Gendershrug Queer feminist Pagan autistic American who spends too much time on tumblr. Primarily I blog about gender, sexuality, race, and politics, but you'll also encounter cute dogs, random fandoms, general geekery, and a surprising amount of language stuff, Shakespearean trivia/humour, and Mr. Rogers. I really miss Mr. Rogers. Also, my crayfish from time to time.  This blog will piss off Nazis, bigots, racists, sexists, homophobes, transphobes, terfs, swerfs, evangelicals, most Republicans, and anyone who thinks that "Social Justice Warrior" is an insult.

A post for pinning:

  • I accept anon asks, but if you're being confrontational, I'm really only going to bother replying if I can use you as a volunteer strawman.
  • If this sounds like I just shitcan any anon asks that make points I don't want to engage with, you're right. I'm not obligated to give you anonymous time on my blog.
  • Nor am I obligated to reply to your response, but you're much more likely to get a response if you actually reblog with commentary
  • Don't worry.... 95% of you idiots who think you're making a great point attacking me on anon make wonderful volunteer strawmen.
  • Seriously, somehow the combination of "I need to argue with this person" and "I don't want to put my name on it" is almost guaranteed to produce easily refuted stupidity.
  • I don't bother with asks telling me I should stop using the word queer anymore.
  • I will occasionally reblog donation posts when the people or circumstances reach a specific criteria, but don't ask me to reblog your donation post if we don't have conversations.
  • I will very rarely reblog anything that says I have to reblog it. Even if it was something I might have reblogged without being ordered to. It's my blog, you don't get to decide its content.
  • I try to avoid any content that a large number of people would consider triggering, and sometimes if I don't I'll put a warning. But I'm probably not going to be willing to tag a specific trigger. This is less "I don't care" than "Keeping track of everyone's triggers is more effort than I can manage in these trying times in which I can barely walk at the same time, much less chew gum."

Kind of hard to believe there was once a time where a legitimate genre of post was "my mom says if this gets 2k notes she'll buy me a doughnut" and everyone would just. go ham

I vote we revive this shit.

Y’all, if this post gets 2k notes I’ll buy my own damned self a doughnut.

Oh for crying out loud.

As of right now, THIS is the front page of cnn.com.

First of all:

That's an advert in the top story box.

Second of all:

I have a 1080p monitor. That's as much real estate as a website can expect to have, in terms of content, and NOT ONE ITEM ON THIS SCREEN IS IMPORTANT NEWS. A few items are interesting. The woman who pantsed herself on a treadmill and then posted the footage online is wildly amusing. But none of this is really NEWS.

Do better, CNN.

Oh you should have seen the channel around 6pm cst. They aired kardashian baby announcement And some leader playing golf before getting to the story about russian soldiers caught r*ping sudanese women. Like okay you'd think the last one would hold more priority and the first two wouldn't fucking be there.

I understand that there are people who want to hear that kind of 'news', and I don't object to selling them to advertisers. But not above the virtual fold.

Oh for crying out loud.

Just had the realization that when I was a kid, nobody argued about pineapple on pizza. The topping we argued about was anchovies. It wasn't even an argument really-- it was a massive cultural hate for the topping and the people who ate it that makes the response to pineapple seem like "mild disapproval", and a very few people who were bullied for wanting fish on their pizza.

I just checked all of my local pizza places, and none of them-- not the chains, not the momandpops-- even offer it as a topping anymore.

Reminder that every time you see “rip up your lawn” or “kill your lawn” you’re listening to hot garbage from people who don’t know anything about plants, and you will walk away from their advice having actually lost knowledge.

I mean, you’ll still be a happier person than someone who cares too much about fan fiction! But you would’ve destroyed biomass and stripped topsoil for no fucking reason, and released carbon, and killed off a whole root system for being unfashionable.

Repeat after Elodie what we do with lawns that we don’t want:

1. We compost them down, with cardboard and green mulch, and build a bed on top of them - especially if we are converting to vegetable gardening/food production/ flower production where we NEED soil quality and nutrients preserved. We NEED every scrap of carbon to go into our damn nutrients, and we won’t get there by ripping back to dead clay. Or,

2. If the turf is terraformed in a different environmental type i.e. an arid setting and you’re planning to xeriscape, it’s less important to keep nutrients but we still want to lock in what can be preserved and ensure that your actions aren’t REMOVING the soil you need or EXPOSING IT TO INSTANT EROSION WHILE YOUR PLANTINGS ARE ESTABLISHED OH MY GOD. We might section and flip the turf over and expose the roots to kill it off, while preserving the structure and any native soil, and giving native microorganisms the chance to build a new life without being shoved into sacks and taken to landfill. Or,

3. We grow them out and see what components are in them, then style them pleasingly; often the much-derided turf grass actually contains an interesting mixture of plants that are maintaining themselves beautifully with absolutely no inputs, and therefore could make a wonderfully dreamy, low-maintenance step towards a “wildlife corner” if left to flower and seed. Or,

4. We plant over and through them; for example, converting a lawn space into an orchard meadow with successional bulbs and wildflowers is such a delightful choice that produces fruit, flowers, picnic opportunities, forage for pollinators, a pleasant multi-use space and requires so few inputs. Just a few fruit trees provide shade, habitat, carbon sinks, and copious food. Leaving long grass to grow under them brings all the benefits of groundcover (nature abhors bare earth, and so should we, the poor bastards trying to save it) and management can nudge it from a charming burst of crocuses at the end of winter through to a very nice wildflower space in summer, which will do nothing but replenish your soil and soul. Or,

5. If you’re actually rewilding , rather than just throwing sunflower seeds around and patting yourself on the back for it, you’re in touch with local knowledge-keepers who are advising you much better on your specific situation, right? Right? So you’re doing what they advised you, right.

I haven’t even touched on soil health or the carbon cycle.

It isn’t as punchy and REBELLIOUS AGAINST YOUR DAD as ripping/killing language! but DO YOU SEE HOW EVEN AS A JOKE YOU WALK AWAY FROM IT KNOWING LESS ABOUT PLANTS?

Seriously, if you guys can do one thing of utility on social media it could be to mock the “ripping/killing grass is so good and eco” thing until it falls apart. It has no value, it’s just Americans scolding their dads at a safe distance. And even if we just make it more fashionable to replace it with “composting” at least that’s a more valuable word to shove between your ears.

My specialty at work (eg, what I tend to get thrown into) is wrangling clever but extremely poorly behaved children. (The children are adolescent, but children nonetheless.) They tend to be boys. They tend to have ADHD. (It's possible that the focus on the clever rules out the ADHD girls, who have cleverly developed better masking skills by adolescence.)

The current bright and terrible-on-purpose disaster, A, is aware of the ADHD diagnosis but has apparently been told nothing about the disability. So a lot of our conversations go like this:

Me: Well, I'd ask you why you decided to start making richly detailed but extremely inappropriate jokes during class, but I'm pretty sure the answer is that someone started yelling at you for doing it before you realized that you were.

A, leaning backward, looking concerned: Are you following me?

Me: Yes, that's what I do with the spare time I don't have during the day, follow aggravating children around. We have so few of them here.

A, put out either because I've called him aggravating or because he's not special and aggravating: Sarcasm isn't very nice, Ms. T.

Me, sarcastically: I'm so sorry. Maybe you looked at the work first, thought boring, and then decided to be an enormous brat.

A: You can read minds?!

--

Me: Clearly we need executive dysfunction strategies for you, because if we don't get in front of it you'll be an adult who sits on their sofa for forty minutes yelling at herself to do the dishes and never does them.

A, trying to politely muffle laughter: Are you doing all right, Ms. T?

Me: Out of dishes, but fine. What's working in your classes? Your Literature grade is good, why are you doing the reading?

A looks left. Right. Up. At his phone.

Me: ... You aren't doing the reading, are you? The other kids ask questions because they don't understand it, and you figure out what it has to be about from the answers and never read.

A: Are you in my Lit class??

--

Me: Okay, look, ADHD brains are weird, and we tend to get them from our families, so these -

A, immediately: My dad.

Me, derailed from my drug interaction speech: Yeah, okay. When your dad has coffee, does he get calmer?

A, backing away: You're stalking my whole family now?!

“Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.”

“Over time, mistakes in generated data compound and ultimately force models that learn from generated data to misperceive reality even further,” wrote one of the paper’s leading authors, Ilia Shumailov, in an email to VentureBeat. “We were surprised to observe how quickly model collapse happens: Models can rapidly forget most of the original data from which they initially learned.”
The second way to avoid degradation in response quality and reduce unwanted errors or repetitions from AI models is to introduce new, clean, human-generated datasets back into their training.
However, as the researchers point out, this would require some sort of mass labeling mechanism or effort by content producers or AI companies to differentiate between AI-generated and human-generated content. At present, no such reliable or large-scale effort exists online.

Ah, so it provides the seeds of its own destruction. Excellent.

One thing I love about Tumblr that wasn't a thing on Reddit is that I can just write whatever the fuck text post I want. No titles. No putting text on images. No algorithms or karma. Just fuckin splatter your mind onto the screen and people will see it. Like god intended.

It has unironically been great for my mental health. It’s like the opposite of doomscrolling. Coomscrolling? Idk

Mood I've felt marginally better past 2 days than I have in how long???

Speaking as a longtime Tumblr user

It’s doing me good to see you all here. Like we’ve had some pretty sus UX changes lately (although nowhere near on the level of what Reddit’s doing—mostly it’s been months since they introduced Tumblr Live and we’re all still mad about it), and seeing y’all come stumbling in like “oh this is COOL” is letting me take a fresh look at the site and really appreciate why I love it here.

I’ve seen some discussion on the actual hellsite (Twitter) about how there’s nowhere left for anyone to go now with the Reddit problems and people get irrationally angry if you mention Tumblr. I saw someone lamenting how “all the sites are gone” and someone replied “Tumblr’s actually fine?” and they were like “NO NO TUMBLR IS DEAD NO ONE GOES THERE ANYMORE?” and several of us responded “...mmkay, I go there all the time, must be imagining things.”

I’m sorry the porn ban thing didn’t actually kill the site, dudes, but it didn’t.

Tumblr is the embodiment of the “Stop telling everyone I’m dead!” “Sometimes, I can still hear his voice” meme. I’m not going to pretend everything is sunshine and roses over here, because it’s not, and I’m not going to pretend Tumblr is all that it once was in terms of the good, but it’s definitely not dead over here.

A friend of mine sent me a screenshot of a tumblr post that she had found on reddit, and was like "Man, it's a shame tumblr is dead, that looks like it was my kind of site" and then I pointed out to her that the post she had sent me was less than a week old.

There's channels on YouTube and TikTok that are just people reading Tumblr posts. (To be fair, the same can be said for reddit.)

We're the gay cousin everyone who is living a happy gay life while everyone in their old church group has been told they died.

Meanwhile, on Twitter…

…Sound familiar?

I don't know if this story is 100% true, but I'm told he had to jump through legal hoops after he wrote "By Any Means Necessary" because he realized that one of the fans had posted something on Usenet about unions on Babylon 5. Like, had just mentioned that they should exist.

"Vegan Leather"

Plastic. just say plastic.

How dare you leave this in the notes

Before anyone goes into vegan leather alternatives made from cactus or cork or fruit waste...

I heard of those too. I thought they were really cool! I thought it was a great idea! So I went and looked into how they were made!

They're all made by binding the organic material together with at least 50% plastic.

They're still all plastic.
