Long time no see Tumblr

So, a lot has happened in the past 24 hours, and I thought it would be best for me to come back here (after almost 10 months >.<) and discuss how I feel. Sorry if this is incredibly long to read, but please take the time to consider my opinion. Please don’t directly target me or anyone, no matter what their opinion is. I’m sorry if none of this makes sense, but I hope somebody takes something good away from this.

Now, before I begin, you’re all probably sick of all the bullshit regarding the American election, Donald Trump, Hilary Clinton, blah blah blah. And I get it, I am too. I am not a Trump supporter, or a Clinton supporter. Heck, Australia’s government is messed up enough as it is. Either way, I want to get my opinion out freely before more crazy shit happens.

Today, two friends of mine got into a fight. Friend 1 decided to post on Facebook, a popular form of social media, about their disgust of Trump becoming president and expressed their factual opinions of him. They never targeted Trumps supporters or said anything negative about anyone who voted for him. They just stated their opinion of what Trump is (which I personally agree with, but I don’t want to fuel any fires)

Friend 2, on the other hand, got angry at this, and they directly messaged Friend 1 about it. Friend 2 is not a Trump or Clinton supporter at all, but they still chose to target Friend 1 directly, saying things like “that’s not very polite, you shouldn’t say stuff like that, everybody has their own opinions and you should think before you post so don’t post stuff like that, blah blah blah.“ (i don’t exactly remember, but that’s the basic gist of it)

I had calm, respectful conversations with both Friend 1 and Friend 2, and both of them had equally fair arguments. Friend 1 stated that they wanted to be free to speak out their opinion and felt like Friend 2 was telling them that they couldn’t say it. On the other hand, Friend 2 felt like everyone on social media, including Friend 1, were being attention seekers and trying to target people and start a fight.

One thing I disagree with from Friend 2 is that they believe that social media shouldn’t be used to express opinions, because that causes trouble and bickering. They believe is that social media should only be used to connect with people. What they don’t realise is that one of the most popular and common methods of connecting with others on social media is by expressing opinions with each other. If that wasn’t the case, how would sites like Facebook, YouTube, or Tumblr work? How would fandoms discuss their opinions on shows? How would gamers discuss their opinions of new games? Also, what Friend 2 also didn’t realise that iMessage, Skype, and even those messaging apps that come with their phone, count as social media! They have also been expressing their opinions through social media, so how come their not being told off for speaking their minds?

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I completely agree with Friend 1. After listening to Clinton’s speech about respecting the fact that Trump is president and that we should all give him a chance, I believe that Friend 1 may have come across a little harshly when expressing their opinion on social media. Yes, they used several facts to support their opinion, and yes, I agree with them. But that doesn’t entirely mean that what they said was 100% correct. I respect the fact that they wanted to voice their opinions, but they too could’ve been more respectful of Trump, no matter what they think of him.

I believe that both Friend 1 and 2 need to show some more respect. Correction, not just them, but the whole global social media community. Not only should we respect all opinions and all facts. The main fact is that Trump is President of America. Opinions, however, are greatly mixed. Nothing will change this, but we all can still learn to respect all opinions in order to accept the fact.

Close your eyes and imagine the best version of you possible. That’s who you really are, let go of any part of you that doesn’t believe it.

STAY SAFE ON ELECTION NIGHT

This is a plea to those in the US on tumblr about election night:

If you can, please, for your own safety, stay home.

Regardless of who wins, there will be violence.

If Hillary wins, then all the violence Trump has been encouraging will come to a head. His supporters have already said they believe the system is rigged, and there is a growing movement to “take up arms” and “fight back” if Trump loses. This is especially important for those of you in smaller, more rural, white-dominated communities. Trump supporters are plenty there, and as someone who lives in one, I can tell you the chances of people having guns on hand are very high.

If Trump wins, then all of his ideas about “law and order” being enforced by self-policing neighborhoods and his terrifying ideas of vigilantism being an acceptable form of law enforcement could come to fruition. People will most likely be protesting if he wins, and there is a heavy chance that Trump supporters may decide to shut these protests down with violence. They may decide to get a jump start on kicking people out of America. They may decide to commit hate crimes because Trump being elected reinforces their belief that violent rhetoric and actions against minorities is acceptable.

This is not an exaggeration. There will be violence on Tuesday night. There will be hate crimes. There will be people hurt. Do absolutely everything you can to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Sound extreme? Well, listen up.

I want to stress something to everyone on tumblr who is voting for the first time, or is too young to remember previous elections: the violent rhetoric around this election is NOT NORMAL.

Previous elections have never had this strong of a group of people declaring they’ll secede if their candidate loses. Previous elections have never had violence encouraged and stoked by a presidential candidate. Previous elections have never been this tense, this scary, this pivotal.

This election has been violent, and the results on Tuesday night will either push Trump supporters into thinking their violence is acceptable, or push them into fighting back against what they see as a “rigged system”.

Either way, please look after yourself Tuesday night, especially if you are a minority and/or live in a conservative, white-dominated community.

Please reblog this so everyone can see it. I never ask for reblogs, but this is extremely important for people in the U.S.

Seriously, guys. As SOON as you cast your vote, stay the FUCK home.

It’s going to be worse than a sports riot, I can guarantee it.

Reblog if you want your followers to know they're still safe following you

That they’re still able to be themselves without feeling afraid or disrespected

I don’t mess around or play games. I don’t believe in them. I just want honesty. I’d rather wake up one morning and say, “You know what? I had a really terrible dream that you were fucking someone else. Can you love me extra today?” instead of getting in a fight about some stupid shit and then at the end of the day being like, “Okay, can I tell you why I’ve been acting like this?” I’d rather say “Heads up” than “I’m sorry” later. Your relationship is supposed to be the safe place.

A list of reasons why AVPM still owns my ass after more than half a decade

  • A musical about Harry Potter??? This is reason enough
  • Stars Darren Criss as Harry Potter, a man of colour and a gift to this world
  • Pokes fun at the way JKR/WB handle POC “That’s Lavender Brown - racist sister!”
  • “Let’s leave these big baby childish jerks alone” “Did someone say Draco Malfoy”
  • Every single fucking moment that Lauren Lopez is on screen actually
  • “A person can however be a horcrux” “What’s a - what’s a horcrux” “I’m not even going to tell you Harry you’ll find out soon enough”
  • Quirrelmort
  • Pokes fun at fandom perception of Ron and Draco
  • Cedric Diggory’s 1000 watt smile
  • Voldemort’s revival is accompanied by the appropriate level of drama and a dance number
  • Dumbledore is explicitly gay within the story
  • Ginny has one of the most powerful and soulful voices in the show and her and Harry do power couple harmonizing
  • The greatest Romione kiss I have ever seen in my life
  • All the fourth wall breaks
  • Snape’s parting note in the musical is far less creepy and weird and he dies in a poetically just manner
  • “I love you all… except you Draco I can’t fucking stand you”
  • Dumbledore’s Army holding fast to protect Hogwarts during the Battle of Hogwarts with a song that makes me feel like I too, could defeat Voldemort
  • An arguably better epilogue than the Deathly Hallows
