in sixth grade my homeroom teacher caught this kid stephen saying, “that’s so gay.”

so he told the class that for the rest of the week, anytime you wanted to express something negatively, you could say, “that’s so stephen.”

and it started out as a joke, where even this stephen kid was going around using it, laughing at it, not really caring. it was funny, i guess.

but then one of his friends got a bad mark on a test and said, “that’s so stephen.”

we had a blacktop recess and everyone kept saying, “that’s so stephen.”

and when we got too loud doing groupwork and had to separate and work silently, everyone in the class kept muttering, “that’s so stephen.”

and the weirdest part was that even though it was just a word we were using, even though it had nothing to do with stephen, we all sort of blamed stephen.

and as everyone kept using “that’s so stephen,” all week, you could see stephen himself finding it less and less funny. we played a game called “pamplemousse” in french class and everyone got stephen out right away if they could. someone literally went and found one of stephen’s art projects when nobody else was around and ruined it so he had to start over.

and when my homeroom teacher found out about it, he sat everyone down and told us that it wasn’t okay to say “that’s so stephen” anymore. that the things we’d been blaming him for weren’t his fault and the things we’d been doing to him weren’t fair.

he told us that stephen couldn’t help it that he was stephen. he didn’t choose to be stephen. he was born stephen.

and that’s when it clicked.

we all felt pretty stupid, i think, for sort of falling for it, but i’ll be damned if i’ve ever had a teacher get a lesson across so utterly and completely as mr. bernard did.

it hadn’t even been the full week.

fucks me up that by total coincidence the sun and moon's size difference is exactly matched to their difference in distance from us, thus making our beautiful total solar eclipses where you can see the silver threads of the sun's corona possible because the moon just covers the sun completely

The stars (literally) aligned just right for this experience to be possible. It's likely that aliens don't have this

The moon is also absolutely gargantuan by moon standards. It isn't the largest moon in the solar system, but it is BY FAR the largest in comparison with its planet. Ganymede is the largest satellite of Jupiter and the largest moon in the solar system. Its diameter is only about 3.8% of Jupiter's. Titan's radius is 4.4% of Saturn's. Callisto and Io are the next largest in the neighborhood, with 3.4% and 2.6% the diameter of Jupiter respectively.

Our moon is number 5. It is smaller in direct comparison to the above moons. The diameter of the moon is 3475 km. That is a full 27% of the diameter of the Earth. More than a quarter. That's ridiculous. It's unheard of. The universe is large enough that the word unique probably doesn't mean a lot, but this might be about as close as you get.

This has had a huge impact on our planet. Other things aliens might not have are significant tides. One of Mars's dumpy little potatoes wouldn't be able to move oceans the way our moon does.

Our moon has also stabilized our axis to a massive degree. Without her up there our axis would wobble all over the place and our climate would be far more chaotic. Aliens might not be quite so lucky.

I guess what I am really trying to say is that the moon is extremely cool. I like the moon.

Just want to add that the reason we have such a large moon is because a whole planet crashed into proto-Earth. Theia (the planet) and Earth got so superheated by this collision that their component cores fused and the impact jettisoned a lot of material into space. That massive amount of jettisoned material became our moon. So Earth and the moon have very similar composition. This does not seem to be a common method of lunar formation.

I got a serious beef with the Fermi paradox. There is no Fermi paradox. There stopped being a Fermi paradox once the first radio telescopes went up, and we began to get a true sense of the sheer scale of the universe.

Space is big, empty, and loud. Sunspots can cause enough interference to affect global communications. We’re not even loud enough to talk over our own sun. On our own planet. We can barely communicate with Voyager, and we know exactly where it is and what its signal sounds like.

The Fermi paradox is like doubting the existence of Belfast, because you stood on a windy New York beach shouting towards it and didn’t get an answer.

self proclaimed schizoposter nervously typing '911' into their phone and hovering their thumb above the 'call' key as they hawkishly watch a disheveled guy at a bus stop make repetitive movements and ramble to himself

You know what lemme just come back to this post because I (physically disabled, joint pain, cane user) was on a full train last night with the biggest heaviest backpack you could imagine bcs I’ve just become homeless and I was on my way to a friends house. I tried to ask people for a seat and got flat out ignored. Nobody would even look at me. It got to a point where I was literally shaking crying sobbing dry heaving resorting to begging “I’m really sorry everyone but can someone please give me their seat I have joint problems I’m in a lot of pain”, speaking to people directly “excuse me but you’re in priority seating and I’m disabled and I really need to sit down” and the only person in the whole train who would even LOOK at me while I was wheezing and clutching my stomach and sweating about to pass out in some of the most rancid pain I’ve ever felt in my life. was an old disheveled guy with a tic who was mumbling to himself. and he quietly tried to console me and convinced me to just sit on someone’s suitcase. I hope all the unnatural hair coloured pierced 20 somethings on that train that night ESPECIALLY never know peace for the rest of their fucking lives

Avatar

You seriously can’t call yourself a leftist or a progressive or whatever if you can’t treat other people like actual human beings. I’ve had disheveled people who a lot of ppl would assume are homeless, be quicker to offer me a place to sit on a train than 20 somethings with unnatural hair color and “Be Gay do Crime” pins and stickers do that (esp when I injured my ankle coming back from work nobody except a mumbling elderly lady offered me their seat). They’re also not the ones who threaten to call cops on me when I’m taking foodstuffs from grocery stores! You can post about anarchy and being progressive and unhinged all you want but the fact that you would treat people who are physically disabled and in poverty this way makes you just as an awful person as anybody else

saw a tik tok a few days ago that was like “gen z and young millennials want to fight for systemic change but don’t want to do the work on an individual level and like won’t even be nice to strangers because they ‘don’t owe anyone anything’” and it’s just so fucking true. we can’t demand systemic change if we can’t even be decent to the people we claim to fight for when we see them face to face.

speaking as a pierced physically and mentally disabled 20something year old with colored hair this is absolutely true. they "don't owe anyone anything" including basic human decency i guess. i have a tic t disorder and the amount of people that age who just stare at me like i'm ducking crazy....the ones who eye me when i'm struggling with my forearm crutches in the store, the ones who look at me funny when i'm half crying in pain. "be gay do crime" the do crime part matters actually. it's all "i would always look the other way if i saw someone taking food in the grocery store" unless that means you actually see someone do it. "radical compassion" until it means giving up your seat on public transport. y'all are so fake and these words mean nothing, it's sad.

the uncommon allergy haver to anticapitalist pipeline

in January 2023, companies became required to label sesame on all products it was present in, and undergo rigorous cleaning procedures to prevent sesame contamination, after it was declared the 9th "major" food allergen in the United States.

so, instead of considering this a mandate to give a single shit about people with sesame allergies, almost all American companies decided to just add sesame flour to all their relevant products. because apparently that was cheaper.

it's almost impossible for me to find hot dog and hamburger buns without sesame now. and I am one of the lucky ones. I'm someone who just so happened to notice the label updates, not get caught unawares and have a severe allergic reaction. I'm someone lucky enough to be surrounded by multiple choices of supermarkets, and someone with the incredible privilege to have parents who'll help me search the shelves, and cover those costs that my allergies rack up. not everyone with allergies/other intolerances has all or any of those privileges to begin with.

most food allergies will never be prevalent enough that under capitalism, it will be profitable to give them the level of accommodation that they deserve. I speak from experience with a wide portfolio of hypersensitivity quirks when I say that the rarer the food allergy, the worse it gets.

and here's the thing: I can live without hamburger buns, with only superficial decreases in my quality of life. but sesame isn't my only rare allergy, and ever since this legislation hit, I've been lying awake at night, afraid of what I might lose access to next.

I've been lying awake at night wondering what I'll have to do to live, to obtain enough safe food to survive, if any of my other allergies get this same treatment. and I reiterate. I am one of the privlidged ones.

what these companies have done is completely legal. what these companies did has also cut off up to over a million people from what were previously safe, affordable staples of their diets. a system that has any incentive not to accommodate the dietary needs of any population is not a system that can be allowed to exist. this is the uncommon allergy haver to angry, fuming anticapitalist pipeline.

🏳️‍⚧️ What happens if your state won't allow you to access gender-affirming care, like HRT?

Some states are stepping up where others are stepping back. Connecticut is the first state to pass a "safe state" law that will protect people who are seeking gender-affirming care or abortion care if it becomes illegal in their home state. Connecticut's law also means criminalizing states can't use out-of-state warrants to arrest parents or guardians for helping their child get care there, and would restrict other states from subpoenaing the medical records of families who sought gender-affirming care outside of their home states.

Some other states are on track to pass laws like this, too. While not everyone has the resources to be able to pack up and move, states passing "sanctuary" laws like this want to make it clear that we are welcome. 🏳️‍⚧️

For the world, for our families, for our friends, we have always been a subject of curiosity, bullying, and harassment. But we are sick of this. We, Queer people, are sick of complying with the rules, the social fabric and the society, that can’t see us happy, that can’t see us in love, that can’t see us living our life, the way we want to.

For almost two decades, Nepali queer people have been fighting for equal rights, regardless of the fact that that society and the country have always made them, migrant to their own home. They have been silenced, beaten, harassed, and even killed. They faced discrimination and humiliation from their friends, families, society and the state. But still, nothing has stopped them. Their determination and perseverance are exemplary, and not only are they marching the flags for themselves, but they are definitely making things easy for the future generation as well. To honour those people who have been fighting for equality, both on the frontline or in silent wars against queerphobia, we the team of Kaalo.101, initiated this visual archive project, WE ARE QUEER for this year’s Pride month.

The archive project is a documentation of Nepal’s queer movement, celebrating both small and big wins. It primarily is an online visual archive and showcases pictures of queer people, their struggles, their celebrations and many more.

With our collaborative effort, we hope to be successful in this project and hold space  for discourses and create platforms for archiving queer history.

the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal

This is something she tweeted in 2020. She was elected to her current in 2022. It is currently 2023.

Conservatives are digging it up now not because it's new information or because they particularly care, but because they want to goalpost shift the issue from "is it fucked up for the republicans to block an elected representative from speaking because she's trans" to "quick, look at this shitpost from years ago and pretend it's remotely relevant to the situation"

As with all minorities, white supremacy will use this one example to reinforce their assertion all trans people are violent sexual deviants. This does not mean she should have “done better”; it just means they’ll do this every time.

This is maybe the funniest (worst) radfem post I've come across in a while. It was a comment about cis women getting hysterectomies.

Do y'all know how many feminists have been fighting to be allowed to get hysterectomies without a) birthing (often multiple) children or b) a husband's permission? Including many people who have extremely painful and/or dangerous uterus-related conditions, like PCOS or menorrhagia? So many doctors HATE giving hysterectomies specifically because "you really should have kids first".

Also, cis men don't need to "remove their ballsack" to avoid having kids. They get vasectomies. An incredibly simple, routine procedure.

People who are getting hysterectomies are often doing so for reasons not solely related to pregnancy - if it were just about fertility, getting your tubes tied would suffice if you were averse to other forms of birth control. My mum did that after my sister was born, and then went back in for a hysterectomy a few years later because her periods were agonising. My aunty also had a hysto several years back, because not only were her periods agonising, but they would cause flare ups in some of her other conditions.

I just... how are you calling yourself a feminist while advocating for LESS bodily autonomy for women? How can you act like women are being stupid or reckless in their choice to get a hysto and not see the indescribable misogyny you're utilising?

"It's never [cis] men who remove an organ just because they don't want it" yeah, I wonder if that's because they don't have an organ that causes agonising blood loss on a monthly basis? Like... nobody's out here getting kidneys removed for fun. It's a very specific organ only being removed for very specific, personal reasons.

It's my body, not yours. Hands the fuck off.

*This post is authored by a trans person. If you're agreeing with me about this topic while being against trans healthcare, consider that your whole ideology is built in opposition to bodily autonomy for people outside your ideals of gender. Sit with that information.*

Avatar

Organ removals (presumably cis) men absolutely request too, literally off the top of my head.

  • Tonsilectomy.
  • Cataract surgeries.
  • Wisdom tooth extraction.
  • Voluntary circumcision.
  • Gallbladder removal.
  • Splenectomy.
  • Gastric bypass.
  • Colonectomy.
  • Liposuction.

OH YEAH AND

Kidney. Donation.

That radfem is displaying such massive medical ignorance.

Oh boy! I am a young cis woman who had a hysterectomy, and let me tell you, radfems get real fucking weird about it.

I had all of my internal reproductive organs because I have an autoimmune disease that was attacking those organs, and I was in catastrophic pain, and that serious risk of dying. I have been told by radfams that:

  • I wasn't really sick, I just didn't love my self as a woman, and I needed to get over my internalized misogyny, and then all of my gynecological troubles would go away.
  • I was being lied to by doctors in league with "the trans lobby" because trans women were jealous of my divine generative female power.
  • My pain was a manifestation of the internal conflict that arose within me over the fact that I knew that I shouldn't really accept that my (trans) brother is a guy, and if I just let myself face the truth that my brother was actually still my sister, this would all go away.
  • That I had mutilated myself because of my internalized misogyny.
  • That my hysterectomy was the Western secular misogynistic medical establishment's answer to female genital mutilation.

These are each batshit in their own special way, but the ones that involve in accusation of the medical establishment doing this to me for their own nefarious reasons, feel especially obnoxious to me, because I had to fight tooth and nail to get a hysterectomy. In spite of the fact that I had hemorrhaged on four separate occasions, and had to have emergency surgeries, and in spite of the fact that I had had a diagnosis since I was 18 in which the appropriate course of treatment was the removal of my internal reproductive organs, it took until I was 30, twelve years, during which time I was in excruciating pain, and had as I said four incidents of life threatening hemorrhage. I had multiple surgeons tell me flat out that yeah, I needed a hysterectomy, but they didn't feel comfortable giving me one, because they were afraid I would regret it. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure you have to be alive to regret something, and I wanted to continue to be alive. That modern Western medical establishment sure is misogynistic, and that is part of the reason it took me twelve fucking years to get a hysterectomy.

I didn't get a hysterectomy because my doctor got her jollies mutilating my reproductive organs, or because the trans lobby wanted to steal my magic womb. I didn't get a hysterectomy because *spins wheel* modern beauty culture and plastic surgery. I got one because I was gravely ill and in horrible pain, and I had to fight like hell for it.

And I wasn't this sick because I love my brother, or because I didn't love myself enough as a woman. My immune system doesn't care about my feelings. I can't control it with my good vibes. I have some really hairy autoimmune issues. My life would be very different, and substantially easier if I could control my immune system with good vibes and pure thoughts.

And actually if it comes right down to it the person in my family whose experiences are most similar to my own in this regard, are my father's, who had his prostate removed because he had prostate cancer. Did beauty culture and plastic surgery also brainwash him?

But ultimately, none of this matters to radfems, because when have they ever let the truth get in the way of their paranoid fantasies? The one thing that has always been perfectly clear, is that radfems, much like more standard and open supporters of the patriarchy, don't care about me as a woman at all, and see women, by which of course they mean afab people, as inextricable from our wombs. To them, the loss of my uterus is a tragedy, regardless of the fact that it was killing me. And they just can't stop themselves from being absolutely vile about it.

I think one of the reasons drag kings aren’t as popular as drag queens, aside from the fact that straight women don’t like us, is that people are uncomfortable acknowledging masculinity as a performance. Like we as a society know that femininity is a performance, with its own costumes and rules. Masculinity is also a performance, and nothing makes that more clear than someone making an exaggeration of it

To everyone saying that “uh actually it’s cause drag kings aren’t as visually interesting”

tldr I was looking up the classification system for cerebral palsy (GMFCS) and part of the 2nd level is "climbing stairs with the use of a railing" which just about knocked me out. Ableds. . . are you not. . . using railings? it's right there? this is trying to tell me it's abled culture Not to use the railing?

(use your best judgement as to whether or not abledness applies to you here. mostly I mean disabilities that would have some impact on stair-climbing, natch. chronic pain/fatigue counts, but, like, d/Deafness wouldn't, you get me?)

my immediate circle on here skews pretty disabled, I'd love it if it breached containment for a more representative sample

So, Dove soap and Lizzo are endorsing KOSA, in the name of "social media is bad for teens' self-esteem" (even though that's bullshit) and I am mad.

If you don't know, long story short KOSA is a bill that's ostensibly one of those "Protect the Children" bills, but what it's actually going to do is more or less require you to scan your fucking face every time you want to go on a website; or give away similarly privacy-violating information like your drivers' license or credit card info.

Either that or force them to censor anything that could even remotely be considered not "kid friendly." Not to mention fundies are openly saying they're gonna use this to hurt trans kids. Which is, uh, real fucking bad.

Given that in terms of their actual products they don't have a direct stake in it, it might be possible to get Dove to rescind this (can't find contact info for Lizzo sadly), if you want to contact Dove about this, here's their contact page.

And, as per usual, I urge you to contact your congresscritters, especially given that as of now (Thursday, 4/13/2023) they plan to re-introduce the bill this Monday, and we're going to need a flood of people saying this is awful to kill it.

Reblogging to mention, along with the other Stop KOSA stuff, Fight for the Future has started a petition to tell Lizzo to rescind her support for KOSA.

So, if you want something to sign...
