Claire Beauchamp, an English model and part-time graphic designer, gets a call from her agent that places her in the arms of a Scottish model by the name of James Fraser, if only for a photoshoot. Their chemistry is so convincing that they are offered a brand contract as a couple, and they are pushed to get engaged as a publicity stunt to increase their following. Hesitant at first, Claire considers the contract. What does she want more- to be seen and loved fully by one, or to be viewed by many?

Jamie left the family farm to chase his dreams- now that he has found success, will he make sacrifices for those most important to him?

Follow Claire and Jamie as they navigate the world of modeling, living in the public eye, setting boundaries, and learning what it means to truly love one another above all else.

You are so wonderfully supportive of fanfic writers, I'd like to know what you're reading and what you wish to start reading in the future

Hi there!! Oh my gosh, this is quite a loaded question (for a good reason). One of the best things - I’d say the best thing about the Outlander community right now- is the fanfic world. The authors, the readers, the conversations, the fangirling…..it’s so refreshing and fun to see everyone support each other on their literary journeys that were inspired by Diana Gabaldon’s Claire and Jamie Fraser. (We will not discuss what she said today, I’m still recovering).

I read a lot of fic here. Arguably, it’s the reason I haven’t finished a book yet in 2019 and it’s MID-MARCH. There’s just so much incredible talent here from so many wonderful folks, I can’t help myself!

To answer your question……I’m going to suggest to you 2 categories of fics I rotate between pretty consistently: completed fics, and works in progress.

In no random order, here we go! And authors….my descriptions are bad. I know. It’s just so hard to adequately put into words how amazing y’all’s fics are without me word vomiting for 25 pages.

Completed Works I Return to Again and Again

-A Royal Affair by @julesbeauchamp (Jamie is a royal and meets Claire while at university, and adventure unfolds!)

-A Port in the Storm by @mybeautifuldecay (Claire has lost her uncle and she’s unsure about what’s next for her. She meets Jamie, and the rest is an adventure!)

-A Hundred Lesser Faces by @bonnie-wee-swordsman (When Claire returns to the 1700s, she goes to Lallybroch first instead of Edinburgh)

-Hail Mary by @bonnie-wee-swordsman (Claire and Jamie find themselves in an intimate situation when they’re on the road!)

-Pain In My Asana by @calliopemoonbeam (Jamie is a yoga teacher and Claire is his student, and these adorable babies are the cutest)

-Scalpel & Needle: Arc I & Arc II by @kalendraashtar (Claire and Jamie work together as surgeons, and a secret admirer causes some interesting things to happen!)

-So Long As I’m With You by @claryclark (Secret Service Agent Jamie Fraser. First Lady Claire Randall. Lots goes down. And when you’re done with this one, read the additional ficlet called “Back to Washington”)

-The Call of the Mountains by @whitenightowl (on AO3!) (Claire and Frank are on holiday in Scotland when they meet Jamie Fraser, a sheep farmer in Lallybroch. Things take an interesting turn!)

-The Rivers Between Us by @jmoonrise (Claire and Jamie are divorced parents of two girls, and an accident involving one of their daughters brings them together)

-To Have Your Heart by @laythornmuse (Claire and Jamie have grown up together, and Jamie now wants to win over Claire’s heart!)

-Clairevoyance (Claire is a medical examiner and Jamie is a detective, and their paths cross once they work on a case together) and Escape (Jamie and Claire, from neighbors to soulmates) by @notevenjokingfic. Easiest thing to do for her works is to go to her Tumblr page and access via her menu!!

-Death Dreams by @whiskynottea (Jamie struggles with depression, and Claire struggles with how to help Jamie.)

-Market Price by @desperationandgin (Claire goes to the farmer’s market one day and meets Jamie, a vendor, and sparks fly)

-It Has Always Been Forever by @suhailauniverse (Claire and Jamie are next-door neighbors, and a slow burn ensues!)

Works in Progress

These authors all update at their own pace, so I would check their Tumblr pages or AO3 for updates, but these are all fantastic works.

-A Wild Night in Vegas by @takemeawaytocamelot (Claire and Jamie, both living and working in Vegas, meet for a night and things only escalate from there!)

-Behind Closed Doors by @pondernce (Claire, a professor, and Jamie, a student, meet again under interesting circumstances!)

-The Oath by @curlsgetdemgurls (Claire and Jamie meet at a party for Jamie’s whisky distillery, and things get interesting!)

-Four Years by @curlsgetdemgurls (The work goes through four years of Jamie and Claire’s relationship - the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens)

-Save Tonight by @julesbeauchamp (A WWII-era fic where nurse Claire and Lieutenant Jamie meet, and one night changes it all)

-Attachment by @sassenachwriter (Claire and Jamie are forced to marry each other in order to ease tensions between their two clans)

-Ride Off by @awesomeeyeroll (Jamie is a polo player, Claire seems him at a match, they meet, and fun ensues!)

-Redeem Me by @claryclark (Jamie is a police officer, and Claire is a NICU nurse, and they meet at a coffee shop and form a friendship. Jamie remains hesitant to share his past with Claire, and the plot thickens…)

-If After All These Years You’d Like to Meet by @three-drink-amy (Claire moves back to London and bumps into Jamie, her childhood friend)

-Loss by @missclairebelle (I am linking to her masterlist, because it is the best way to read this story IMO – it is a modern universe of Jamie and Claire’s relationship, with many adventures, hills, and valleys along the way)

-The Sands of Time by @holdhertightandsayhername (Claire’s Uncle Lamb struggles with dementia, and a discovery from his past leads Claire to cross her paths with Jamie!)

-Truth to Triumph by @gotham-ruaidh (Jamie is reporting on a historical disaster in NYC in the early 1900s, and he meets Claire, a recovery worker, and they work together to find justice)

-Back to You: Arc I (completed) and Arc II (in progress) by @balfeheughlywed(Claire and Jamie meet while at university, and sparks immediately fly - but the problem is, Jamie has a girlfriend. A great adventure ensues!)

-House of Fraser by @phaedrecameron (Jame is a designer, and he meets Claire when he’s assigned to design her wedding gown. The story goes through some unexpected twists and turns!)

-Mint and Thistles by @ladyviolethummingbird (Claire and Jamie work together at a gardening company, and their friendship deepens as they get to know each other better)

-The Midwife by @magnoliasinbloom (Claire works in France as a midwife, and she meets Jamie during her time there!)

-Dr. B, Medicine Woman by @crossinginstyle (Dr. Quinn reimagined through the characters of Outlander!)

-Flood My Mornings by @bonnie-wee-swordsman (Jamie falls through the stones into 1950, and he begins his search for Claire)

-Loving Jamie by @JillianK (Jamie, a mute and poor farmer, is forced to marry Claire to save Claire from an indiscretion of her own making)

-STAY by @kkruml (Musician Jamie meets Claire, a doctor, and Jamie’s emotional distance presents a challenge for their relationship)

-Our Son by @jack-andthestalk (Claire and Jamie have a one-night stand, conceiving a son. They meet again for Jamie’s sister’s wedding, and the adventure begins. There are 2 arcs in this story!)

And a shout out to two of my favorite one-shots:

The Cost by @abreathofsnowandashes (An accusation threatens to tear Claire and Jamie apart, and they are forced to deal with their past)

Counterpoint by @smashing-teacups (Taking place in 4x13, Jamie and Claire deal with emotional burdens they have carried during their separation and during their time with Bree)

Nonnie - this is far from a complete list. I also have my own that I’m currently working on (“Third Time’s The Charm”) that you can find on AO3 and on my Tumblr page! There are so many other incredible works out there – many by these authors above, and others I haven’t listed. There are an embarrassment of riches waiting for you in the Outlander fic community, and I hope this list helps. :)

To you amazing writers - thank you for what y’all do, and for sharing your gifts with us.

Reblogging this in honor of Fanfiction Writers’ Day. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

It hasn’t been updated in a few months (I believe I made this in March 2019), but this is a solid representation of the incredible talent that’s come from the Outlander fandom. Ever since I began lurking in the fandom in late 2017 (and remained a lurker on here until, oh, mid-2018..), the writing community has truly kept the fandom’s heartbeat going.

Thank you for sharing your gifts with us. You writers are fantastic. ❤️

LALLYBROCH LIBRARY: CATEGORY- MEDICAL AU

We want to put a *disclaimer* on this category list. We are aware that this a very, very common trope in the fandom. We did our best to put as many fics as we could, but know we missed a few. If there is a story we missed, please feel free to add it!

Scalpel and Needle Arc I and Arc II by @kalendraashtar

Jamie and Claire are surgeons working together but they can’t see eye to eye. However, a secret admirer has found a special place in her heart.

Claire Beauchamp is a second year medical student. Due to many late nights with her clinicals, and studying for her pharmacology class, she’s at wits end. One Friday night she decides not to join Joe Abernathy and her other friends out at Church, their local hangout spot, but instead winds up in a dive bar close to her flat with a very nice whisky selection. In fact, one of the best one she’s ever seen. When the bartender calls her ‘Sassenach’ and pours her a double, Claire gets a feeling in her chest she’s never felt before.

I’ll be there for you Arc I and Arc II by @ttwaffles

I knew I was in trouble when he moved in. I had known somewhere deep inside, that sharing an apartment with Jamie Fraser was going to be a problem. But, I had needed the help to pay the rent and he was the only suitable person who met my obscene standards.

He was clean, respectful, and didn’t mind my coming and going at odd hours. He was a hard worker, Adso loved him, and all the references on his application had stellar reviews about him. He was also extremely charming and good-looking. I had started to fall for him the moment he came over for a tour of the apartment, though, I hadn’t wanted to admit it to anyone- let alone myself.

The problem was, I was with Frank, and he had a girlfriend—But Jamie Fraser was my best friend, and that was all.

Loss by @missclairebelle

Surgeon Claire x Jamie | the free fall of unexpectedly losing a patient for the first time.

Flood My Mornings by @bonnie-wee-swordsman

Two years after Culloden, Jamie accidentally falls through the stones, finding himself in 1950.

Imagine Claire and Jamie as a couple in present-day Glasgow

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Claire’s skills as a midwife take her to France and Scotland. When her journey leads her to James Fraser, she will have to decide if she will follow her calling or her heart.

Jamie is a new police officer living in London when he meets Claire Beauchamp, a NICU nurse, in a coffee shop. They form a close friendship, with Jamie hesitant to let it become something more, troubled by demons from his past.

Clair(e)Voyance 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 by @notevenjokingfic

Detective Sergeant James Fraser gets help on a case from Dr. Claire Randall, the new Medical Examiner. The real mystery, however, is what secret the Doctor herself is hiding.

Claire Beauchamp has a crush on the marketing department’s heartthrob and accidentally spills her feelings for him drunkenly at the holiday staff party. Little does she know, Jamie Fraser is trying to score the hospital’s most eligible resident.

3 years he had been gone - and oh, had things changed

A series of near meetings for Jamie and Claire leads to an unexpected relationship, set in modern day Scotland. Claire is a medical student and Jamie owns a whisky distillery.

Jamie Fraser suffers a horrific car accident and wakes up in the hospital to find his life forever changed. His sole comfort comes in the companionship he finds with Claire Beauchamp, a nurse who understands his suffering more than he knows.

They were once two strangers passing each other, but maybe all love needs is a second chance.

Claire Beauchamp is trying to make her way as a woman doctor in the 19th century. After the death of her uncle and only supporter, she decides to risk everything to travel to a small frontier town in Colorado in need of a doctor. There, she meets Mac, a mysterious, quiet man who lives among the Cheyenne, and becomes a sudden mother to three orphaned children.

James Fraser, a single father in Scotland, takes his ill daughter to the United States in the hopes that Claire Randall (an expert in her field of medicine) can save her life.

Back to You by @balfeheughlywed

Claire, a college senior, transfers to Scotland at the last minute to finish out her undergraduate degree after she breaks up with Frank. She meets Jamie on campus and sparks fly - and then she discovers he is the boyfriend of her new roommate, Laoghaire.

Vietnam AU by @gotham-ruaidh

Imagine if Jamie was a wounded soldier and Claire a combat nurse who met in a field hospital during the Vietnam War.

Escape by @notevenjokingfic

Love can come from the places you least expect it to, even from the fire escape. Claire and Jamie modern AU. A story of love, marriage, and the blessings that come from building a life together.

Jamie and Claire, raising a family in Edinburgh. It’s all going great, until Claire gets sick.

It was just a regular busy day in the A&E for Dr. Claire Beauchamp, until a certain red-headed Scot came in.

Prompt: Imagine Jamie survived Culloden and went through the stones and wind up in the hospital where Claire is now a Doctor. Frank is not in the picture

Prompt: Imagine that Jamie somehow travels to Claire’s time when Bree is still a baby and drops in on Claire randomly like she does in voyager / Prompt: Imagine Claire, Frank, and Brianna’s reaction if Jamie showed up in the 20th century.

James Fraser is a tough-guy, riding bulls in rodeos across America. Claire Randall is a widow and surgeon, attending a rodeo on a rare night off.

Claire is a doctor in residence at a hospital in Inverness, Scotland. One night, a large, red headed patient comes in with a bruised rib after being in a bar fight. His name is Jamie Fraser. Something about Jamie draws Claire to him. She wants to be around him. However, she must decide whether she wants to be around him only as friends or something more.

Dr. Claire Beauchamp is in her first year of residency at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital when she walks into a beautiful second-hand bookshop. There she meets the charming, kind shop owner Jamie Fraser and they become fast friends. Jamie falls fast and hard for her, and they’re perfect for each other. The’s only one problem: Claire is engaged to Dr. Frank Randall.

Canon Divergence AU: Faith survived and stayed at Lallybroch when Claire returned through the stones before Culloden. An accidental trip to Craigh Na Dun turns life upside down for the Frasers once again.

Fraser Memorial by @curlsgetdemgurls

Claire is a resident at a hospital in Edinburgh and one night when a red-headed scot comes in with a dislocated shoulder, it changes the path of both their lives.

From the bts footage, looks like they cut a j/c moment of them kissing from the show. And, I’m betting this is just one tiny bit we didn’t see. I get this type of scene prob doesn’t move story, but it’s these type of scenes that show j/c’s connection. In regards to dvd extras, do you know if they’re given limited timeframe of footage to include? B/C at this point I’d rather see all these parts than what they were promoting previously in regards to side characters, etc.

Sony is in charge of the DVDs so I would imagine it depends on the funnel of footage received>footage chosen>footage approved.  (The special additional scenes in the collector’s edition are written and filmed specifically for the DVD sale.  They were dumb and didn’t include any J/C ones so I for one, would not spend the extra money for those secondary characters.)

And the Award for Best Fake Offscreen Ship Between Two Co-Stars Goes to ...

Well ladies and gentlemen, the last four years have been a long, crazy adventure for SC shippers in the OL fandom. But on January 22, 2018, our shipper boat took a direct hit courtesy of a barely noticeable news brief in People magazine: OL’s leading lady CB “confirmed at the GGs” that she and “fellow Irishman” (cough, cough) TM are engaged and CB is “very happy!”  Very.  Happy.  And just so everyone (read: shippers) is clear on the timing, “she was first seen with (T) in 2015.” So I guess that’s supposed to mean they’ve been dating since 2015, right? But we have to guess at that because C hasn’t spoken to any other media outlet about T or her engagement, and has yet to post anything about it on her social media. She didn’t even mention it during on-air GG red carpet interviews on the very night she shared the news with People (apparently because People had the “exclusive”). Instead of talking about her pretty big life event (at least for most people) when she was asked “so what’s new,” she spent her on-camera time speaking about sending S home and the Time’s Up “blackout,” all while hiding her engagement ring from view.

Hey, SamCait shipper sisters, how did we miss this? So C has really been with T for the last 2+ years and not with S? But, but, just … how? Well, “obviously” we weren’t paying attention! Oh wait, we were paying attention, but we thought SC were together — even though they denied a relationship — because their actions rarely matched their words. That and the fact that we noticed that C and S never really showed any interest in or paid any attention to their SO adjacents. So why were shippers, journos and many others led to the believe that SC were a couple, despite their words to the contrary? Well, ACTING, obviously. S and C are actors, you know, and pretty good ones at that. So what do I, as a shipper (or former, IDK) think about all this? If this CT engagement is TRUTH and S and C never had a relationship IRL or aren’t covering up one now, then SC deserve ALL the acting awards for making us think they were together offscreen as well as on. S and C truly and completely convinced me and thousands of others (yes, thousands … just check @jamesandclairefraser followers) that they were SOs offscreen too. But why, if they are such stellar actors, didn’t they just play the part of “great offscreen friends and co-stars,” instead of showing so much sizzling, sexually-charged chemistry offscreen that many were convinced they were together IRL? Especially if they really, really wanted us to believe they were not together. Why was C able to play the offscreen good friends co-star part so convincingly with Tobias, but unable to do the same with S? We know Ron Moore would have probably approved of SC toning it down, because he did his level best to make the show about a “love triangle, not a JC love story. Why didn’t the show staff or their agents tell them to take it down a notch, that fans would still love them and TPTB would still approve of a “friendly friends co-stars” act as long as the high ratings and money continued pouring in?

And what about the other actors on the show? Surely, in countless interviews after the IFH, don’t you think Tobias — another great actor — would have observed SC sitting “no room for jaysus” close, grooming each other, making crazy flirty eye contact and little mouth pouts at one another, all the while telling reporters “we’re not together … just great acting … sorry fans can’t separate us from our characters.” Don’t you think that after at least one of these interviews, that Tobias – a cool, forthright guy who S and C highly respect for his acting chops – would have pulled them aside and said, “Hey guys, nice interview and you both showed great chemistry and the audience/interviewer loved you, but you may want to tone it down since some people are still convinced you two are together when you’re ‘obviously’ not.” I don’t think if Tobias said this to S and C that they would have said “Oh Tobias, you’re full of shit because we’re not misleading anyone. If our fans can’t see that our sexed-up off-screen antics are just an act, then they’re just crazy and delusional!” Why did joking jokers like Steven Cree and Richard Rankin just politely listen, smile, and not make one sarcastic remark on-air when SC launched into their loved-up innuendo at panels and Cons? Don’t you think a no-shit guy like Cree would have jokingly called them out during the interviews (or in tweets afterwards) by saying something like, “Since were talking awards season, I nominate S and C for the MTV Fandom Award for Best Fake Offscreen Ship Between Two Co-Stars.” If jokes like these had been peppered throughout interviews fairly regularly, it would have gone a long way toward getting people off the ship and preventing new ones from boarding.

And why, even when she acted onscreen post-IFH with S and C, would Rosie Day tweet C this birthday greeting on C’s PUBLIC Twitter account in 2016: “@caitrionambalfe HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope you have the loveliest day … And @SamHeughan treats you like the queen you are” (followed by 11 interesting, some might even say, “sexual” emojis)? Couldn’t Rosie have tweeted instead “Hope everyone on set treats you like the queen you are”? or “Hope #TonyMcGill treats you like the queen you are” (followed by sexual emojis)? WHY did Rosie have to make C’s bday best wishes about S? And then C responded:  “Thank you honey xxx.” If C didn’t want delusional fans to get the wrong message, she should have tweeted Rosie back: “Thank you honey. My civilian SO and I have great plans for this evening.” That would have shut down all the shipper celebrations that ensued shortly after that tweetfest and still allowed C “privacy.” And they continued crossing the line into sexual innuendo, whistling and checking out each other’s “assets,” as well as knowing too much about each other’s personal habits (4 a.m. workout … no) and identical interests and likes (sancerre, Netflix and chill, banoffee pie).

Come on, SC (or at least “Captain S”) had to know they were pushing things too far when shippers were shipping and tweeting them like crazy and every article was about their “amazing chemistry” and asking whether it was acting or for real. Again I ask, WHY DIDN”T ANYONE TELL THEM THEY WERE TAKING THE CHEMISTRY THING TOO FAR AND MAKING PEOPLE THINK THEY WERE TOGETHER IRL? And if people did warn them about this — hell, someone must have — why didn’t SC listen for years and years?  Oh, that’s right, anyone who would think they were together offscreen must just be crazy and delusional! No one with two wits about them could possibly be getting mixed messages … and SC ALREADY told everyone in a joint interview in early 2016 that they weren’t together.

And still, the innuendo went on and on. S saw no reason why he shouldn’t whistle at C’s butt on the T2 red carpet. And C didn’t see why she shouldn’t compare her co-star’s genitals to a beer bottle, or a shrimp. And they could call each other “hubby” and “wifey” in tweets. And why would SC fans ever think the cute little emoji’s in their tweets were flirty little sexual innuendos? Come on, S and C just liked to make their tweets more colorful-looking and interesting by adding eggplants, blowfish, shrimp, peaches, umbrellas and cake — no one should have read anything more into it. And don’t all female co-stars simulate checking their male co-star’s “balls” and post it on social media … trying to drum up fan support for a fave charity? And god, no, why would anyone ever think that feeling up your co-star’s breasts during photo shoots (repeatedly), telling the world you don’t wear modesty patches while simulating sex, being captured for perpetuity in S1 of OL moaning your co-star’s real name, and tweeting whilst sitting in bed together might be inappropriate … if you’re not in an actual relationship with one another? Apparently, S and C’s real SOs were totally chill all these years with their sexually-oriented offscreen antics, so why weren’t fans similarly chill? And because they said they were “obviously” not together and just bff co-stars, they saw no reason that they couldn’t publicly stroke, whistle, grab breasts and tweet each other in a variety of sexual ways (and oddly, no one accused them of sexually harassing each other and neither did they). Why would anyone misinterpret their actions and ship them together? But some of us did.

So, in what “may” be the conclusion of a 4-year roller coaster ride for a shipperdom filled with elation, creative brilliance, forged friendships, disbelief, battles with anti’s and trolls, “delusion,” anger, and gaslighting, here is what may well be the final honor shippers and ex-shippers alike bestow upon SC: “Best Fake Offscreen Ship Between Two Co-stars.” Indeed.

Reblogging the piece I wrote a few days ago because I want this to be at top of my Tumblr blog as I say sayonara for a while due to fatigue from watching all the shipper fandom abuse, trolling, doxing, gaslighting, and belittling. I can’t even imagine the abuse shippers like @jamesandclairefraser and @queencaitriona go through on a constant basis and yet they’ve persevered. My hat’s off to you two and all the shipper sisters who are still here supporting the OL show, the characters, the books, and the actors, in spite of everything.

Awesome post.

Wonderful summary of an unholy mess!

I really wasn’t going to mention this, but I figured I could use the support from you guys. Yesterday my Mom was rushed to hospital. After almost 7 hours in the emergency room she’s been transferred to another hospital to have surgery. It’ll most likely happen today or tomorrow and then she will have another long recovery. After her last time in hospital at the beginning of the year she was never the same. She’s weaker. Her brain has deteriorated further as has her body and I’m not sure if it’ll be able to get her through surgery this time around.

My Mom has been suffering for a long time and part of me wants her to be at peace because I know how painful and difficult this process is going to be, but at the same time I’m not sure if I’m ready to say goodbye to her forever. I guess what I’m asking for are prayers for the best outcome for her, not for me. If she does get through it then please pray for her recovery to be quick and painless. If she doesn’t get through it then please pray for myself and for my family to find a way to deal with saying goodbye to her and for us to heal together after so many years. I’m so grateful for the love and support all of you have given me throughout the years. It helps more than you know. Thank you.

Oh Jess. I am so sorry. Sending blessings to you and your family. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oh, I am so sorry. She is lucky to have a daughter like you, and I’m sure she knows that. I’ll be praying for you and your whole family for health and peace. ❤️❤️

Jess, sending you prayers for healing, comfort and peace.  Know that you and your family will be in my thoughts today.

Jess, it takes a lot of courage to admit having such divergent feelings. I remember when my daughter passed, the first words out of my mouth were, “ Thank God it’s finally over.” My husband hugged me and said, “ I know what you

you mean, but other people won’t understand.”

I know how you feel,Jess, having been in the same position with both of my parents. It’s a lonely place to be. Sending love and prayers to you all and the hope that you’ll find peace and a tranquil mind.

“In Scotland, the landscape has changed,”says Sam Heughan. He’s referring to April of 1746: The Jacobite Rising has been ground to a bloody battlefield, and things are about to get even more difficult for the Highlanders and their culture. It’s from that point that the new season of the historical-fiction phenomenon unfolds—against a very harsh period of Scottish history. The show’s time-traveling lovers, Claire and Jamie, are separated across centuries at the start of the third season. When they’re finally reunited, they’re different people, in a very different era: Scotland after Culloden. As always with Outlander, it’s a time and place that’s been thoroughly researched, “because history is one of the best tools for a fiction writer,” says writer, director and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts. British Heritage Travel: This new season opens with the Battle of Culloden. How did you re-create this bloody, chaotic melee? Sam Heughan: It was the first thing we shot for Season Three. It’s a part of our history, Scottish history, and we were all excited to shoot those scenes since we’ve been talking about it for two seasons—not only the actors, but the extras and the crew. It’s actually not described in the book; Jamie just wakes up on the battlefield. We had a couple of weeks of rehearsals because it had quite a few different elements to it—different fights. Matthew B. Roberts: We took about 200 extras, supporting artists, and we put them through a boot camp. We trained them with muskets and swords and axes, and all the weapons they would be using. We took them through charges and got them proficient prior to shooting. The lovely thing about period battles is everybody gets filthy dirty and they all have beards. Recognizing people is very difficult.

BHT: Claire even appears in the aftermath— as a vision to a wounded Jamie as he lies among the dead. Caitriona Balfe: That was a strange day. It was one of my first weeks going back, and the boys had all been filming these battle scenes. It was nighttime and freezing and those poor extras were just on these really thin mats. One take—it was quite funny—I was walking through and someone had obviously fallen asleep and all I could hear was the loudest snoring coming from one of them. You’re trying to be all ethereal and make this moment as magical as possible, and then all you can hear is snoring. But it was really quite eerie to see all those bodies just strewn across a moor.

BHT: The aftermath of the battle, the way the Jacobites were treated by Cumberland’s army, is just brutal in the show. Roberts: Initially after the battle, Cumberland, who is the King’s son, was called the Butcher because there was no quarter given immediately after. They went in and they killed. After, they imprisoned Jacobites—many in what they would call open prisons. In our portrayal, it’s more of a closed prison. We played it slightly in a different context, where it’s more closed; Jamie has to escape.

BHT: The Scotland of this season—the one Jamie lives in without Claire, which Claire eventually returns to—is not the same as the previous two seasons. Balfe: Yes, in one scene, Claire looks at a place in Edinburgh and makes a comment that the last time they were there, they were with all the generals and Bonnie Prince Charlie. When she comes back, it’s a depressed people and their culture has been stripped from them in many ways. We see this through Jamie and his cohorts—good men who had been soldiers or who had been landowners are now relegated to the black market and to existing on the fringes of society.Roberts: We wanted to stay true to the fact that the Clearances took place after Culloden, and they banned bagpipes, they banned tartans, they banned kilts—essentially banning the Scottish way of life. Scratch that, not the Scottish way of life, the Highland way of life. Because what we kept running into in the history is that many Scots fought on both sides. There were many lowland Scots fighting for what you would essentially call the British on the battlefield. It wasn’t really necessarily Scottish versus English. It was a fight between two monarchs. “Our monarch is better than your monarch!” The Jacobites wanted to install the Stuarts as the rightful Kings, and the Hanovers wanted to keep their throne. In Season Three, no Scot wears a kilt. We don’t do bagpipes. There are no tartans. We take away all the weapons, because it was also a crime for a Highlander to have weapons—guns or pistols or muskets. We play that. It’s part of the story going forward, and then the Clearances, and how difficult it all was.

BHT: Jamie was a leader of his people before. What is he fighting for now that the war is over? Heughan: Jamie went to die with his men at Culloden. When he wakes up on the battlefield, he has to find a purpose to live again—but he now can’t, because he’s an outlaw. It was a very difficult time, so yeah, he’s a fugitive and he assumes many different guises before he establishes himself in Edinburgh many years later, but it’s a really interesting journey that he goes on. I think ultimately it’s about him finding a purpose—and he does become a rebel again, but in a different way. He does it through literature. Roberts: He finds that over time the one thing he can latch onto is the freeing of Scotland in his mind. He becomes a seditionist, he becomes a traitor in a way, but he can’t fight the way he would normally fight, so he takes up pen and paper and becomes a printer. He starts printing seditious material in a way that Thomas Paine or someone in America would’ve started printing pamphlets. Paul Revere did, actually, as well. They used the press to get the word out, and that’s what Jamie did in his time.

BHT: In her time, the 1960s, Claire has become a pioneering surgeon, yet she still chooses to go back to the mid-1700s. Balfe: No matter what time Claire’s in, she’s a woman who breaks through glass ceilings. But I’ve always felt that she’s most her vibrant self when she’s back in the 1700s. So it’s interesting to watch this formidable woman plow her way through medical school [in the 1950s]and buck against the patriarchy and then make a decision to go back to a time we would probably think is much more patriarchal. And yet she finds herself in a much more comfortable position, in some ways, back then.

BHT: Is that part of what makes this rough, dangerous past so appealing? The sense that it was somehow more of a meritocracy? Balfe: I suppose if you think about Scotland at that time and after all that social upheaval, societies are constantly reinventing themselves. So I think that when she goes back, there is a sense that if you’re an industrious person and you have the advantage of intelligence and fortitude, you can do anything within that. Maybe we think in our modern-day society that things are more settled, and it’s harder to buck the system at this point. Roberts: The lovely juxtaposition is that she comes from a time of turmoil in the United States. It’s ‘68. There’s the civil rights movement. She is a woman. The feminist movement really hasn’t hit yet, so we play things where she goes to Harvard Medical School and she’s looked down upon. Even her husband, Frank, resents that she becomes a doctor. When she does go back, she’s a healer and she’s respected, but we still play the period. She’s still a woman in a time when women were considered breeders, and they kept the house. In our show, we don’t shy away from that.

BHT: When BHT spoke to Diana Gabaldon, author of the novels, she said that it was a credit to the Scottish spirit that they didn’t actually succeed in erasing the Highland culture. Heughan: Yeah, absolutely. It’s a very vibrant culture and I think it still feels close to the Scottish people, even now. There’s still talk of independence and there’s a constant state of, not unrest, but of the chance that there could be something better. I guess Scotland has always been the underdog, and we’re quite good at doing that. Balfe: I think they did their best to try. I think that the Scottish personality and the Scottish culture is very strong, but I do think that it underwent a definite depression—is that the right word?—for a while. It wasn’t until the 1800s that they were allowed this idea of kilts again and the tartan, but that was decided by the British, and it was done for the King’s visit [King George IV’s visit to Scotland in 1822]. So yes, they weren’t able to completely quash that culture, but they made it very difficult for the Scots for many, many years.

BHT: Claire is our entrance into the world of 1700s Scotland. Traveling to the past, knowing what will happen, that’s a fantasy for every student of history. Balfe: I think that’s the beauty of the story that Diana created. We all want to play around with the “What ifs” of history, and what would you do. Claire is such a great heroine for that reason, because she comes armed with so many handy skills for the past—not only is she a healer, but she has the advantage of having had a historian husband, so she has so much historical knowledge. Roberts: That’s the way we tell the story: Claire is the audience. She’s our eyes in the world because she’s the most contemporary person we have. She’s allowed to have certain thoughts. She’s allowed to be slightly out of time [in the 1700s]and do something that’s slightly out of time, whether it’s hold hands or show affection in public or do any little thing like that. It’s OK if Jamie and Claire do it, but if other characters do it, then it’s wrong

.BHT: Sam, you’re playing a guy from hundreds of years ago, yet he really likes that his wife is this extraordinary person. Heughan: Yeah, in some ways, he’s forward thinking and he wears his heart on his sleeve at times. He’s a pretty decent guy and I think he would almost fit into modern society, however, there are times that he still is a man of his time and he has a moral code and a tradition of doing things. Those are the times when he and Claire really clash and we see those throughout every season—from season one onwards. Those are the times when they really butt heads, but they learn from each other. She learns about his time and about who he is, and he learns there’s another way of doing things, a more progressive way of doing things.

BHT: The history that the show covers speaks to so many people. Just like the culture has spread all over the world—Highland games, for example, are everywhere. Balfe: I’m Irish and we spend so long doing our own history, so I was not very aware of the intricacies of Scottish history at all. It was really interesting for me to learn all about this and the other finer points of Scottish history over the past two seasons. Roberts: Our show is moving to the American South, and I’m starting to do a lot more American South history research, and what I’m finding is that one of the biggest Highland games in the world is in North Carolina [the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, covered in our last issue’s “Anglo-File”]. When they talk about the rebel yell from the American Civil War, the charge—if you read a description of that, you are reading about a Highland charge. You find out that a lot of the Confederate soldiers had Scottish ancestry. Some of the best bagpipers in the world are not from Scotland anymore. They’re from Canada, the United States, India, Burma. They’re all over the world because of the Scots who went out and were transported from the Highlands to open up the British Empire. They brought their culture to these other places. Heughan: We were just shooting in South Africa, and even there, there are great ties to the Scots. People who have been sent there—to Australia, to America, to Canada. That’s one of the draws of the show: People are interested in the history of their past. And not all of it, I have to add, was particularly noble. There was a lot of slavery, and Scots were definitely pressed in many avenues.

BHT: That’s touched on this season when Jacobite prisoners are sent out to the New World. Roberts: The transportation we play—Highland Scots were transported as indentured servants to different colonies to help open up the colonies. The English, or the British, found that they were such fierce fighters that they could go and live off the land, and they didn’t complain. To put them in harsh environments was perfect for them. They didn’t want to go to prison or be labeled as traitors, so in a way it was a great compromise. You go open up these new worlds instead. We used that history. That’s when it really works, when you find history that works perfectly for your story. Heughan: It’s just so amazing how far-reaching the Scottish culture has gone—and how much this small part of the world has affected the rest.

These interviews have been edited and condensed for clarity. Season Three of Outlander premieres September 10 on Starz.

This is a fantastic interview.

What a good read.
