scott lang is the best MCU hero because he's just... not a piece of government propoganda??
like, he's not a soldier, he's not a cop, he's not a superspy or a government contractor. man's out here trying to do the right thing and give his daughter what she deserves and keep his head above water.
antman starts with a pretty serious commentary on the american prison system: even if you serve your time, it's deliberatly set up to stick you in minimum-wage jobs with little stability and no long term plan. scott lang goes back to robberies because he can't afford child support.
even when he gets caught, it's not the good old american government leading lang in a righteous battle against foreign terrorists. hank pym brings lang on to fight darren cross - a deranged american capitalist hoping to sell the pym particle technology to the highest bidder. sound familiar?
antman stands out from other marvel movies because it's a heist movie, not a propaganda film. scott lang does the right thing and the government sucker punches him in the face - and scott makes that choice again and again. he's a guy against the world in the best way, and it makes him all the better a hero.
