Help save mature forests in the US

For those who don't want to/can't watch the video - I can't transcribe well but I can describe:

It's a TikTok video starting with a person asking "What is something you found out later in life and should have known earlier but just didn't?"

It then cuts to a different person who has a map of the continental United States. This person explains that while there aren't a lot of old growth forests left in the US, there are a lot of mature forests.

Mature forests are forests that were logged a while ago, but have been left for decades. The trees are not quite old enough to be called old growth, but they are starting to show the first signs of it. That stage is called mature growth.

This person colors in parts of the map to show mature forest areas all over the country, including in the Midwest, Northeast, Appalachia, the Rocky Mountains, and the South. They also briefly mention the benefits of spending time with trees, including reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and increased pain tolerance.

These mature forests are managed by the US Forest Service. The Forest Service just asked for public comment about whether or not they should protect these forests. The Federal Bureau of Land Management, the government office of deciding what land gets used for and giving it out to things like mining and oil and gas, also recently asked if we think conservation should be a valid use of government land.

The comment period is open until July 20, 2023. Contact these agencies and let them know conservation and protecting mature forests are important to us! The link above goes to a form where you can contact both agencies at once with a quick and simple form.

This is what I'm talking about when I say the moral panic around kink and fantasy is a right wing position:

The idea that someone's fantasies or what art they like is an indicator they are a dangerous predator is fearmongering and it specifically targets queer people. The "exposing" of people for their sexuality is a tool of the right to smear someone's name as a sexual deviant, and therefore, someone worthy of punishment and exile. There is nothing leftist about this behavior. If you participate in this kind of "exposing" of "pedophiles" you need to reexamine who you're benefiting and what kind of mentality you're falling into.

A lot of people in the notes going “well actually Lumine technically isn’t a loli because—“ and entirely missing the point. It does not matter, even if it was who fucking cares, there is no scenario where you locking arms with reactionaries to harass trans women for liking a drawing is acceptable.

I also think the image is gross bc it’s straight, but I’m not ruled by a politics of disgust because uhh I’m not a fucking fascist. Jesus Christ start re-examining your politics and who they hurt and help.

If a trans person actually did like real pedophilia content I'd find that a problem as a fellow trans person just as much as I'd find it a problem if any crusty old white cis het man liked it.

I get that to the far right there's no difference but us people who can actually differentiate between the two and DO know the difference care.

(Hypothetical) If we had a queer politician and it turned out they ACTUALY partake in pedophilia I wouldn't be comfortable with that.

When you come onto a post about how trans women are being put under intense scrutiny and having pedophilia accusations fabricated to justify a genocide and say “well we need to keep an eye out for the trans women who like actual pedophile drawings!” what do you think this accomplishes? Saying “well this specific drawing is fine but if it was of underage characters then we should be finding a problem with it” doesn’t change anything?

If a trans person does something pedophilic, then they shouldn't not be held accountable for their actions just because they're trans. I don't want pedophiles getting away with being pedophiles no matter what their gender or sexuality fucking is.

What's considered obscene under obscenity law is not the same as what is considered CSEM. 'Obscene' art and actual Child Sexual Exploitation Material are not even close to the same thing. The blurring of the lines here by lumping it all together as "pedophile art" is only detrimental to actually eradicating CSEM and obscures what 'obscenity' is by-law.

And I don't think obscenity law is a good metric to judge something by, considering all forms of queerness have been considered—by nature—obscene, and are quickly heading back in that direction to the point of illegality.

Consider: the trans woman this post is about is a lawmaker who has been barred from the statehouse floor for speaking against the banning of gender-affirming medical care for trans children. This is dangerously close to speaking up for the rights of trans kids being illegal. Transness is dangerously close to being considered obscenity by-law again.

And, to echo what I said in my tags the last time I added to this post, because I think the message of this post is completely flying over people's heads...

no but literally season 1 is all about how these guys are socialized to be liars and frauds, and there's genuine effort put in to show them gaining people's trust and coming up with elaborate lies and scams and just being extremely manipulative on an intimate, interpersonal level with victims and their families. it's uncomfortable! it's confrontational! like in Faith how they clash with the culty religious group they're infiltrating, or in Skin when sam lies to an actual friend of his from college and there are real repercussions for everyone involved. the entire structure of early spn makes you feel that they're outsiders whose social skills are tailored toward blindsiding people 'for their own good' and running away from whatever real damage they leave in their wake. you can feel that dean especially isn't wired to form actual relationships with people other than his dad or his brother because absolutely everything he puts out into the world is an elaborate mirage. ~pretending to be the fbi~ in every single episode in later seasons isn't just boring and repetitive, it's also incredibly impersonal. It's detached and rote and it makes the entire vigilante schtick so fucking toothless. half the time they just skip over the fake badges and cajoling completely and cut right to the inside of the morgue. you could make them the real fbi at that point and it wouldn't make a difference. like it's literally just x files.

cas is an excellent frame of reference for this because when he tags along on a hunt in s5 and it doesn't go well, it's an extremely straightforward case of "he doesn't even know ABOUT lying! he doesn't know TO lie!" Like, cut to them already inside the building, and then Cas starts raving about demons because he doesn't get that there's this thing called "lying," and that's the joke. It's an absolute rubber-mallet approach to writing the scene. And later on they'll literally have him flash an upside-down badge that says "agent beyonce" on it and it still gets him to where he needs to be because at this point in the show, the con becomes a given. It's no longer an integral part of the characters or the process or the story. All of the intricacies of lying to a person happen off-screen. Whereas like. Imagine cas tagging along on a hunt in season 1. Imagine cas pretending to be a priest at that one girl's funeral in Bloody Mary. Imagine cas on the plane in Phantom Traveller, or at the crime scene on the bridge in Phantom Traveller. The clash would be absolutely catastrophic because these are episodes where there's actually some level of charisma and nuance to what sam and dean have to do in order to charm/ply/flatter/guilt the people around them into giving them they want. It's a task that they have to carry out and sometimes they even fail. Anyway I miss that shit.
