Random stuff I think up

Ok so here's a list of my tags, mostly so i can fucking remember them. Since I have trouble with that, a fair bit of the tagging will be inconsistent and blurry, but at the very least there shouldn't be any posts lost to the tagless void (for posts that would otherwise be lost to the tagless void, see #ut, untagged). Putting a read more cause it's... long.

Today I had the spoons to hunt down my neighborhood council's email and send them an email that basically said "I would like to be able to leave my house but my neighborhood is not wheelchair accessible. Who do I talk to in order to get this fixed?" And I am planning on hunting down whoever is in charge of sidewalks in my neighborhood and getting real annoying about it.

My plan is to email them every time I want to go somewhere but can't.

Email 1: hello, please fix sidewalks so I can ride the bus places I am very passionate about public transportation and also being able to leave my house.

Email 200: This morning I woke up and wanted some delicious coffee to start my day, but upon getting out of bed I discovered we were out of coffee. I would've liked to take advantage of the city's public transportation system in order to support a local business like [examples of local coffee shops] but alas I cannot because I am a wheelchair user and my neighborhood is not wheelchair accessible. [Insert rest of arguement RE accessibility]. In conclusion I don't work I can keep these emails coming until I die please just fix my sidewalks.

This is going to be my new spite hobby. I was already mad about the abuse and general shit hand the disabled get dealt in our culture but then I started using a wheelchair and places like doctor's offices have been inaccessible to me so now I am filled with rage. So I am going to take that rage and do something with it. Like emailing my city counsel representatives at 2 am like "I crave a moonlight walk fix my sidewalks please."

Yes!

I never noticed how much sidewalks sucks until I started taking my niece for walks around her neighborhood in the stroller. There's no point in staying on the sidewalk, you have to walk in the road! The sidewalks slope because they're old and dirt shifts around, and one corner lifts up because tree roots have grown underneath. Then they slope even more at every single driveway, which is like every 15-20 feet. And then people with too many cars will park their last car only partially in the driveway, so you have to go around that. 😤 And then sometimes they're just overgrown because why groom a sidewalk that nobody uses anyways?

whats cool about being trans is my parents are totally right. i did kill their beautiful son. im the thing that animates his corpse in an ever more convincing parody of a happy girl. i devoured him from the inside out and now there is nothing left of him and he is dead dead dead and there is only me, with my hollow eyes and dark eyeliner and long hair, and my big smile. my limp, effeminate gestures belie the marionetting of the boy they loved. my fagginess is his death. already his body becomes a fitter home for my parasitism in full; the tits, the hips, the thighs. sorry about your kid. thanks for the biomass <3

hey look how fucking cool @felicitousfeline’s art is. this owns bones

The US is deeply segregated not only along racial lines, but along class lines as well: from housing to schools to healthcare, many of our major institutions are designed to allow rich people to keep poor people as far away from them as possible.

Where do rich and poor people interact with one another? If I'm reading this study right, it's restaurants. Which restaurants? They find that some of the most cross-class locations in the country are cheap full-service restaurants: "Olive Garden, Applebee’s, Chili’s and IHOP."

The more I think about this finding the more it makes sense. Places like Olive Garden are some of the only locations in US society which are simultaneously "nice" enough to draw in high-income diners and cheap enough to attract low-income diners. Rich people go to, say, Outback Steakhouse because they see it as a cheap and easy meal that's better than fast food, poor people go because it's one of the closest things to a nice steakhouse you can eat at without dropping $100+ per person.

Other cross-class locations: churches, libraries, credit unions, alcohol stores, the DMV. Locations which worsen class segregation: golf courses and country clubs, bars, museums.

This reminds me of the most fantastic book liveblogs I've ever read (by ozy thingofthings). It's Times Square Red Times Square Blue by Afrofuturist scifi author Samuel Delany.

(full but paywalled review by that liveblogger here, although the visible portion of the text should give you an idea of what a weird and fantastic book this is)

A lot of it is about The Venus Theater, which showed adult films until a push to close all the porn theaters also shut it down in 1970. It was pretty normal to jerk off in the theater and cruise for (mostly m/m?) sex – both of the sex worker and non sex worker variety (although the line was very blurry). It was normal to e.g. jerk off your neighbor.

Delany was a college professor at Amherst the time he was a Venus regular. He had social and sexual relationships with a large number of people he met at the Venus Theater, including homeless people – he kept up correspondence with many of them, including at least one who went to prison. When establishments like the Venus shut down, one reason he didn't like this was that he thought it was unhealthy for society to get rid of spaces with high levels of inter-class contact.

Delany draws a distinction contact and networking. The Venus was contact, and more formal "people of various backgrounds who are interested in X, come mingle" events are networking. And if you get rid of interclass contact spaces, interclass networking spaces have to 'take up the slack' of facilitating connections, and they... can't do it. Example about parenting from the linked blog post:

In a city, contact requires certain specific characteristics to thrive. You need socioeconomically diverse spaces with mixed commercial and residential uses, and which provide basic services like restaurants, public bathrooms, and small shops. Without that setup, you don’t get contact. (...) [If you're at a park close to your house and] there aren’t any public bathrooms, it’s a jerk move to not let a mom at the park your kids are playing at use the bathroom in your house, but you don’t want to just let any rando into your house. So you’re reluctant to talk to moms you don’t know. (Real thing!)

And here's Delany on the value of public spaces that facilitate sexual contact:

Similarly, if every sexual encounter involves bringing someone back to your house, the general sexual activity in a city becomes anxiety-filled, class-bound, and choosy. This is precisely why public rest rooms, peep shows, sex movies, bars with grope rooms, and parks with enough greenery are necessary for a relaxed and friendly sexual atmosphere in a democratic metropolis

After reading the above Delany quote I sat back in my chair, grinning wildly at the ceiling. You may not like it but this is what the optimal take looks like

French medias saying the military coup in Gabon is not as bad and not a priority compared to the one in Niger because there is no “anti France feeling” and because “the president has been elected but the election were suspicious”

Look the election were suspicious as fuck. Gabon’s government actually asked the Moroccan government to keep Gabonese students from going to assist to the count at the embassy in Morocco… the Moroccan government agreed and violently beat up the Gabonese students who tried to assist to the voting count. But suspicious election or not it doesn’t matter. What matters to France is “is the new leader going to let us steal or not? If the answer is yes then it’s a good coup and we support it”

I swear they are not even pretending anymore bitch really said “it’s different there’s no anti France feeling”.

["MAINTAINING SECRECY

The secrecy some Gay couples maintain about their relationship to each other can reach great extremes. I have known women lovers together for fifteen years who pretend to live separately, going one night to the house of one and the next night to the house of the other, each time carrying the gear, suitcases, changes of clothing they will need for the next day, for the sake of fooling a few family members and straight friends. Other Lesbian couples go to even greater lengths to ensure secrecy. One couple has lived together for nine years and also works together in the same office, where they are so fearful of being discovered as lovers and lifetime mates that they pretend not to know each other at all.

When I was working in a laboratory as a medical technician, I had a clear lesson in the secrecy of the closet. Six of us were standing around getting ready to take off our white coats and go home for a day, when one woman told an ugly anti-Gay joke. She was a young aide in training to do minor tests, nowhere near as skilled as the rest of us, and she had recently been married; no one expected her to stay long at her job. The point of her joke was See-how-stupid-and-wrong-faggots-are. It made me sick inside to hear it, but following the rule of appearing heterosexual or else, from years of habit and the desire to stay employed and reasonably accepted among my co-workers, I obediently pretended to laugh.

As I did so my eyes met the sparkling blue eyes of our boss, a man who had worked his way up to become the chief laboratory technician of the hospital. In his fifties, he had never married and was continually teased as "most eligible bachelor." His eyes flashed into mine now as, mouths guffawing, we acknowledged with a special look that straight people simply had to be indulged, that that was a part of The Life. My eyes flicked from him to his lover Robert, a technician like myself and a friend of mine. Large, broad-shouldered, and with his short hair plastered to his skull, Robert looked as if the word straight was invented just to describe him. He and I were teased in the laboratory for going out together, which we occasionally did as a front. But I knew Robert and our boss had been lovers for several years and owned a business together outside the laboratory, operating it on weekends; I had been there to have dinner with them.

From Robert's distorted, pretending-to-laugh face, my gaze passed to another technician, Rita. She was beautiful, graceful, smart and gutsy. She had recently led all of us in a strike for better wages. The highly skilled Rita was head of the bacteriology department and a specialist in her work. I had a terrific crush on her at the time, and now to my disgust here she was pretending to howl at the rude joke, and so was her lover Alberta who stood next to her with her coat on, ready to go home. The two Lesbians worked together in the laboratory, owned a house and a couple of horses, having lived together for at least ten years. I closed my mouth and stopped laughing. I was too astonished at what my eyes had registered: Of six people standing in the laboratory laughing at a vicious anti-Gay joke, five were Gay— everyone except the woman who had told the joke. The walls of the closet are guarded by the dogs of terror, and inside of the closet is a house of mirrors."]

it is in times like these that it is helpful to remember that all of medical science that isn't like, infectious disease, but PARTICULARLY psychiatry is a bunch of fake ass idiots who dont know how to do science, and when you hear about it on tiktok, it's being reinterpreted through somebody even dumber who is lying to you for clicks. as such you should treat anything they say as lies.

u do this wiggle because it's a normal thing to do.

anyways i looked at this paper. they stick people (n=32) on a wii balance board for 30 seconds and check how much the center of gravity moves. for AHDH patients, it's 44.4 ± 9.0 cm (1 sigma) and for non ADHD patients its 39.5 ± 7.2 cm (1 sigma)

so like. at best the effect size is 'wow. adhd people shift their weight, on average, a tiny bit more than non-adhd people, when told to stand still'.

in summary, don't trust tiktok, and:

^^^^

by "eyeball statistics" that's weak as hell. if you actually check the p-value with, like, welch's t-test you get p = 0.1 - not statistically significant at 0.05, which is a pretty low bar. if you think about it for like 5 seconds, you might remember that just about everyone walks like this when they're trying to go somewhere in a hurry.

especially for pop-sci around neurodivergence, and especially if your primary reaction is "that's so relatable!" or "I didn't realize that was only a <diagnosis> thing!" - and ESPECIALLY if that trait is something which would not be negatively impacting your life - I encourage you to take a sec to check whether there's any basis to it at all.

FUCKING THANK YOU.

I was here like 'DODGING OBJECTS IN YOUR WAY cannot POSSIBLY have anything to do with this shit', and I'm happy that someone else actually looked into it.

id like to add as well that though "postural sway" appears to be an actual technical term, it doesnt seem to refer to the behaviour described visually in the video (leaning your way around things when walking). Rather, in the study, it's described like this:

A non-academic article referencing the study described it like this:

so even if there were a statistically significant difference, it wouldnt even be referring to the behaviour shown in the video, but something much less visually striking.

so yeah dont trust random ass tiktok videos and tumblr posts

as soon as this motherfucker started talking about "the amount of grey matter in the brain" i knew id was some tiktok bullshit. Ive read about postural sway and that ain't it. Ty for correcting

oh thank gods somebody broke it down — when i saw this i clicked off without sharing because it gave me red flag fake science alarm bells

I was raised by a doctor of internal medicine (thats a kind of doctor that has to keep up on basically all developing medical science research) and an ER nurse, so medical research joirnals were our coffee table reading and the importance of scientific method with citation of sources was a big deal growing up, and it kills me to see this kind of “medical info” videos getting passed around so often

Help a disabled woman from being homeless!!!

**URGENT: PLEASE READ/SIGNAL BOOST**

Monday, August 28th: Hello everyone, I’m Gemma, a bi, mentally ill, and disabled woman in desperate need of help, as I'm struggling to pay my rent for this month!!!

As most of you are already aware from my previous posts, I have been struggling financially these past few years due to Covid-19 and my welfare benefit (Universal Credit) being under continuous reviews, which is due to my worsening mental/physical health and the UK’s controversial changes to how benefits are assessed and assigned. After a lengthy health assessment, I have been declared unfit for work. However, I am still waiting for the outcome of my Adult Disability application, which I applied for back on January 15th!! (seven months ago!!!)

To be quite honest, these past few months have been absolute hell for me, and with no other income, I've been relying on the kindness of others to get by, however, due to creditors and late bills, I've been struggling to pay my rent and I've only just managed to keep my utilities on. I won't receive my welfare until the 31st, and I could use some help to pay my £137.52 rent balance.

If anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1/€1, it would save my life, and sharing definitely helps just as much. Thank you so much for all your help!! ❤

£36.42/£150!!!

OKAY TO RB! 👍

My abuser just stormed into my fiance and i's room and said he's this close 🤏 to kicking Jameson and I out onto the streets. And I said again. You'd be kicking us out again. And said I still have the texts to prove he texted me that we had to leave last time. And he was like, that wasn't me kicking you out. That was you causing problems for everyone in the house and you being lazy and awful and terrible so I dealt with it.

And it's Like. I literally have his own texts, in his own words. And he's still twisting the truth and rewriting reality 🙄.

He also said I better smarten up because while living here, I have access to my doctors. And while living on my own, I don't.

So it's literally, go along with his demands, and this hostage situation, and I'll be able to live longer with access to my treatment as a terminally ill person...Or I move out as soon as possible again, and be mentally safe from his abuse...but physically unable to see my doctors, as a terminally ill person.

We have a place lined up for us to move to, in Kitchener ON, with our friend Kieran. But first month's rent is $1000, and then we need money for gas to move our stuff back to Kitchener.

$0/$1200

This has 229 notes, but we have received nothing from it, please please keep this moving!

I think what modern filmmakers keep forgetting (especially disney affiliated productions) is that actors used to have a much more hands on and involved part. they weren’t just reading lines handed to them in a dark alley ten minutes before filming. they suggested script revisions and could improvise lines on the spot bc they knew their characters.

if mark hamill says “that’s not my luke skywalker” that’s a problem. if temuera morrison had insight into boba fett’s character the producers shouldn’t have just told him to deal with the script he was given. if seb stan was concerned about the lack of closure in the steve bucky relationship that’s an issue! the insane levels of secrecy and treating actors like the only thing they are good for is regurgitating lines is so detrimental to modern film/television

Something to bear in mind is that this isn’t our first turn on this particular merry-go-round.

Back in the early days of Hollywood, when vertically integrated monopolies were the norm and studios, distributors and theatre chains were all owned by the same parent companies, actors were basically treated like cattle, locked into exploitative multi-film contracts, routinely kept in the dark and lied to, and – apart from a handful of the very largest stars – had very little creative input. This would remain the case until a series of massive antitrust lawsuits in the 1930s and 1940s forced the studio monopolies to break up.

Now we’re seeing a shift back toward all film production being controlled by a tiny handful of companies, employing abusive booking practices to push the theatre chains around and exercise de facto control over theatre booking decisions in spite of technically being unaffiliated – and we’re also seeing a shift back toward how actors were treated under the old studio monopolies.

Like, this isn’t just a problem with the cultural zeitgeist. It’s not just a matter of people forgetting how to make good films. There are concrete economic incentives that lead to this sort of behaviour – and just like the first time around, it’s probably not going to get solved any way other than at legislative gunpoint.

I love opening up this website first thing like the morning paper and immediately seeing multiple posts like "how to get rid of the evil clown on the dashboard". like oh is this what we're doing today

I'm gonna start adding this to every post I see about this advertising bs that tumblr are pulling

not only is it annoying, and in some countries probably illegal for not declaring a paid partnership

TUMBLR IS CROSSING THE PICKET LINE

They are taking money from Netflix to promote a show.

Actors and writers are unable to promote work because of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Netflix is under the AMPTP, so it is a struck company, making One Piece a struck work.

So they are using alternate ways of promoting their products, including paying companies like tumblr.

Both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA have made statements saying that they consider anyone or company taking payment to promote struck work as crossing the picket line.

Tumblr is spitting in the face of struggling actors and writers to make a quick buck from Netflix

Don’t ask native speakers why something happens in a language they don’t know

Native speakers are good for telling you when you’re texting like a grandma and/or a caveman but they can’t explain anything to you.

Ask a native speaker how to make a sound and they’ll be like “idk just do it lol”

If you have a technical question the people you wanna ask are people trained to teach the language, linguists that study it, or people that speak it as a second language at a very high level.

You might want to exclude people who speak it as a second language at a high level. They're also making their grammar decisions based on vibes at that point.

I make a correction. Second language speakers at a high level who are frickin nerds about it.

cloth fibers ranked by how much sense they make to me

  1. wool. the most sensible and natural fiber. wool is hair from meaty, not very bright animals. I have hair, meat and did not excell in school, so I relate and understand this best
  2. cotton. Cotton is made from plants, but don't be scared yet. these plants are basically small sheep for they are wooly and have hard seeds in them like how sheep are wooly and have hard bones inside them
  3. silk. I was fairly terrorized as a child by caterpillars that made massive silk tents in mulberry trees. We came in into conflict because both of us liked to eat mulberries and climb mulberry trees and also because they liked falling out of the tree upon my person. this was distressing for me for various reasons primary amongst them was that I had been told by the wisdom of my peers that if one of them bit me I would die. anyway I believe that silk comes from caterpillars because I have seen it I have witnessed it I have lived it
  4. linen. bizarre. have you watched videos of people turning flax into fibers? I have watched video after video of flax being transformed from plant to linen and none of it makes any sense. One moment, it's a plant and then if you comb it enough it becomes hair. utterly incomprehensibe witchcraft
  5. PLASTIC? PLASTIC? PLAstic??????
  6. spandex. incomprehensibe. uncontainable. might as well be string theory to me.

Quick request for help: have basically no food (just one box of pasta left) or drink (much more concerning), Leo has food for the next few days but next to no litter, and we are not in a good way food/drink-wise. I have a colossal headache as I'm typing this.

However! It's not all bleak. :) The good news is we are so broke BECAUSE we have nearly finished jumping through every hoop we need to in order to remain housed, for at least the next year (and maybe, if we're lucky, longer). Yay!

We were required to put up a proper deposit though, which ate up what I had saved for the laptop since my current one is dead in the water (I'm using my phone rn), and what little I had left from that big job that paid me out in June.

The other bit of bad news is that said company I was freelancing with is pretty much going under and hasn't offered me a gig in months and don't have the ability to pay their freelancers currently, and I haven't been successful in finding my own clients (even with a fancy website 😔), so I need whatever help I can get for the three of us.

Working on bettering my art so I can offer commissions, and still of course offering sensitivity readings/editing services, so if you'd prefer to commission me instead of donating, please feel free.

Whether it's $1, $5, $20, or $10k (lmao could you imagine??), every little bit helps. If you're anti-P*yPal (as well we all should be), I also accept InstaCart gift cards, any amount helps. (You can send them to sa.bouraleh@gmail.com). If you're a gajillionaire and just want to buy the laptop outright from my Amazon wishlist (let me put that insane request out into the universe; nothing ventured, nothing gained!), you can do so there.

Thank you for reading. Please boost/donate if able. I love you all. 🥹 ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💖🤍🤎🖤

I think people would armchair diagnose bad people with cluster B disorders much less if psychiatric disorders hadn't all been given names by ableists who of course picked the traits most unberarable to "sane" people to name them rather than, you know, the ways it affects the people that have them. It's like, when doctors are all "this disorder gives you extremely low self esteem. and it's called the Selfish Fucking Asshole Disorder" or "this disorder makes you want to die so bad. and it's called the Hysteric Bitch Disorder" or "this disorder disconnects you from your peers. and it's called the Insane Evil Cunt Disorder" and so on and so forth, so of course you have people going "oh, this person is a selfish fucking asshole, they MUST have Selfish Fucking Asshole Disorder! this further proves that all people with this disorder are like that in the first place!" Do You See It

"Psychiatry is an inherently harmful institution" "ummm source?" ok imagine you had an illness that impairs your day to day life. now imagine it was called the Shitty Bitch Disease.

Bipolar disorder for sure. Thought this could describe autism as well, but apparently not, autism was originally meant to convey “morbid self-absorption”
