101 Comment Starters

I began working on this last summer. Like many veteran fanfiction authors, I lament the decline in commenting that I’ve seen in my fandom, the Tolkien fandom. I’m also a humanities teacher, so I spend a good part of my day teaching young people how to write, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way is that each type of writing involves unique skills that have to be learned. And commenting is a unique form of writing and one that comes with added stresses around social expectations and public performance. My research on the Tolkien fanfic community confirms this: Many people want to comment, but they simply don’t know what to say.

As a teacher of writing, I often use  sentence starters or mentor sentences. The writer uses these to jumpstart their thinking and writing, until they become comfortable enough to begin working independently. “101 Comment Starters” is built around this research-based strategy of teaching writing.

Some of the comment starters are simple enough that they can be merely copied and pasted. Others require filling in some blanks or providing some elaboration. In some cases, a because can be dropped if the reader isn’t comfortable providing that level of elaboration yet. In other cases, a more experienced commenter can add the because and elaborate more on their comment.

They also differ in their level of praise. They range from simple statements of how the author made the reader feel to compliments around an aspect of the author’s writing or their work in general. I’ve tried to limit words like really, very, and so as much as possible, except when it made the comment feel wooden. You’re welcome, of course, to add those words in if you feel they more accurately help capture how a story impacted you.

If you’re just starting to comment, please keep in mind that the vast majority of authors will love to hear from you! They don’t care how long or elaborate your comment is. They don’t care if your English is perfect or if you’re a little awkward. They just want to know that you’re reading and enjoying their work.

Finally, please feel free to reblog and share and add your own comment starters!

101 Comment Starters

Reblogging this for @justleaveacommentfest, which starts today! Commenting is not some mysterious thing that is easy for some people and challenging for others but a skill that can be learned and practiced.

shoutout to characters that you love dearly but if you dont see them get punched in the face canonically on screen by the time this media is over there will be a problem

shoutout to characters that you love so much but they are so fucked. you need them to get hugged right now this instant and if we do not get a canon hug youll kill someone in this room right now

shoutout to characters that you NEED to see cry. you need to see them just break down sobbing because god they need it. if this guy doesnt just bawl for at least 5 minutes on screen im suing.

Indie Game Spotlight: Turovero

We’re back with another Indie Game Spotlight! This week we’re taking a look at Turovero, a traditional JRPG with a dark story and psychological themes. Four archetypal RPG heroes ascend the celestial tower Turovero in order to defeat an ancient evil known as the Dark One. But not everything is as it seems, and the group must uncover the twisted truths, hidden within the tower, about their world…and themselves. Oooooh!

We spoke with Queenie, the lead developer, writer, designer and composer for the game, who basically did about 80% of it on their own—assisted by a team of talented artists (all on Tumblr by the way: @genkaiko, @caffeineandcarpaltunnel, @pleasedrawmore, and @meakersneakers) who provided the major art assets.

What inspired the story and characters in the game?

I’ve always had a thing for games that start normally enough but then take a dark and twisted turn (my first game, Prom Dreams: A High School Love Story, was also kind of like that). I also love JRPGs and adventure games, as well as the storytelling inherent in a lot of RPG Maker horror games, such as Ib, the Strange Men series, etc. So, essentially, I decided to combine all of those things into one game, and thus, Turovero was born!

How long have you been working on Turovero?

In total, the actual development process took around 2 and a half years. You’d think I’d learn after the 16 months my first game took to complete…

How did you choose the style for the game?

Two factors: first, how can I get these characters as anime and JRPG-ish as possible, and second, how can I make it using the RPG Maker sprites and resources I have, along with my admittedly limited spriting abilities? I will admit that the final “look” of everything did require a bit of trial and error.

Are there any funny or unique stories to how you created a certain character?

I must confess that the knight character, Sigurd, was designed with one thing in mind: whatever I personally found attractive in fictional guys, LMAO. He’s an amalgamation of every video game boy I ever had a crush on. Sorry, not sorry. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What genre of game would you like to make next?

I’d like to keep making dark, horror-themed games. As for gameplay type, I’m actually considering doing a visual novel at some point, in addition to RPG/Adventure games.

Which game completely changes its plot when you change one letter in its title?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Tim. Please give Tim his ocarina back. It’s special to him :(

Ready to start playing? Turovero is available for exactly $0.00 on RPGMaker.net, itch.io, GameJolt, and as a direct download from the game’s Tumblr blog! The original soundtrack is also available to download for free on each of these sites, as well as Queenie’s previous game, Prom Dreams: A High School Love Story! Game on!

Galadriel wearing the Elessar

“For Galadriel Celebrimbor made the greatest of his works (save the Three Rings only) … Wielding the Elessar all things grew fair about Galadriel, until the coming of the Shadow to the Forest.”  (Unfinished Tales)

sometimes I forget that I'm just a teenager writing a webcomic in my spare time, so I shouldn't hold myself to the same standards as, say, a feature film with an entire team of professional writers, or Hiromu Arakawa. Writing flawed stories is okay, and even necessary in order to write better ones :)

I hope my grammar is not too chaotic… at least I tried.

Types of Opening Scenes for Your Novel

Here are a handful of ways to open the very first scene in your book! There are plenty more to explore, but these are a set of very tried and true methods.

Autobiographic - your protagonist starts the book reflecting or talking about a past event. They’re looking back in time and sharing an important piece of information with the reader.

In trouble/conflict - a problem has arisen for the protagonist and a sense of urgency is established. This can be an intense conflict like a chase scene or a puzzling problem.

Mysterious opening - the reader is introduced to something peculiar (a fantasy location, unique magic, a cloaked figure, etc.) that raises questions in their mind. Their curiosity will keep them reading.

Scene-setting - the most common opening where you focus on introducing the setting and the characters in it before anything else.

The questioner - the protagonist is questioning something: “Who invited the guy in the trench coat covered in red?”

Beginning with a thought - the novel is started with a philosophical quote or meaningful thought from the protagonist. “What is living worth if she’s not doing it with me?”

Intriguing dialogue - the book starts with interesting dialogue that captures the attention of the reader.

Mood establisher - the novel opens with a deliberate mood that signifies to the reader what they should expect from the story. Ex. a spooky story may open with eerie words and a dark atmosphere.

You know those characters who definitely don't like children? Or just don't have much opportunity to interact with them, because they've probably got some kind of hardened career, like bounty hunter or apocalypse survivor or something? They never expected to be a parent. They probably don't want to be one. But then one day, they get stuck looking after this kid, and, well, they're not gonna be mean to a kid, they're not that awful. And then approximately five seconds and one emotional moment later, whoops, they've adopted them. There's no going back. That's a dad now.

This is the tournament for those characters! Characters who are not, biologically or legally, the parents of these children—but damn if they don't confuse everyone they come in contact with.

QUALIFICATIONS AND LIMITATIONS:

  • Despite the use of "dad," this is not a gender-locked tourney! Characters of other genders are welcome if they fit the description.
  • This is primarily for characters who aren't actually parents. Actual, legal adoption is OK, but it has to be preceded by the aforementioned bonding due to circumstances.
  • Also OK to submit duos that are more vibes or hc-based, but ones with more canon substance will probably get priority.
  • No real people. I may also exclude certain fandoms if something weird comes up. We'll see.
  • You can submit as many characters as you want, but don't spam submit the same one. That will achieve nothing except annoying me.
  • I have no idea how many responses this is gonna get so we're gonna play it by ear vis-a-vis how big the bracket is and how many characters get in. There are no auto ins, but I have a few characters in reserve to fill spots with if it comes up!
  • BE COOL. Don't dunk on other characters. They're having a rough time already, what with having to babysit all these kids. If a bunch of people are aggro about the same character, it will be considered a forfeit.
