They had a renaissance in the late 1800s introducing electricity throughout the nation after they ditched gas and fire around 1880. Within fourteen years, they changed the literacy rate of an population that relied on oral history from near zero percent to 95%. Which is higher than the literacy rate of the United States today. They had street lighting by 1890. And they did this under a traditionalist Hawaiian ruler who praised innovation while still promoting all things Hawaiian which pissed off the colonist missionary party aka Hawaiians who loved white culture so much and hated surfing. That progress got stripped away by Americans and Britains who absolutes loathed that this nation thrived in spite of seeing life completely different from the Western Mindset that is currently destroying the fucking world. on a serious note regarding the wga strike and (as of 1:50 AM PST 7/13) upcoming sag-aftra strike, dsa-la has a fundraiser called The Snacklist which provides snacks and water on the picket lines here in LA. right now the funds they have will not last through the end of the summer, especially given the current and upcoming heatwaves necessitating more supplies. if you have a couple of dollars to spare it's a great way to directly support the writers (and potentially the actors) during this difficult time!
