Weibo article that dives into the origin of the trend and provides a perspective from the other side:

一块吐司,几片芝士,加上一些生菜或水果,一股“清心寡欲”风扑面而来。而这简单无味的搭配,正是一些外国人的正常午餐。
"A slice of bread, a piece of cheese, piece of raw vegetable or fruit: you're blasted by a cleansing gust of ascetic wind. This simple and flavorless pairing is actually the everyday lunch of some foreigners."

Image text: "White people food"

所谓的白人饭特点就是,“冷的“、”素的”、”分量少的“,基本上就是”花最少的功夫准备,仅仅能维系基本器官正常运作“的食物(require the least amount of effort to substain vital signs)。
"Chinese netizens have given this cuisine a name, '白人饭' (white people food). "The characteristics of so-called white people food are 'cold,' 'vegetarian,' 'small portions,' and truly 'requiring the least amount of effort to sustain vital signs' food."
"In other words, white people's food is the kind that doesn't involve cooking, with just one kind of seasoning, if not salt and pepper, then just the direct addition of mayonnaise or ketchup. "Originally, the concept of white people food started with Chinese netizens living overseas. It was because they used social media to expose their white coworkers' lunches — a few carrots and some raw spinach."

OP's tweet reads: "This is my coworker's lunch. A few carrots and some spinach. They already have the ability to produce their own energy without eating food."

Comment 1: "I think since they like suntanning so much, they must be using photosynthesis"

Comment 2: "They depend on therapists to keep them alive"

"Unknowing spectators may mistakenly think that these are freshly washed vegetables about to be chopped and cooked. While Chinese netizens, accustomed to 'lunch means a hot meal', view their white coworkers' lunches as unimaginable."

OP's tweet reads: "My Danish coworker brought something new again. No spinach today, just two carrots and a pepper. They're evolving."

Comment: "Why do they eat like they're putting gas in their cars. Pour it in to be able to go"

OP's tweet reads: "my coworkers lunch is a whole cauliflower! First time I've seen a whole cauliflower eaten with a knife and fork after being cooked. He was even surprised that I'd never seen that before. These people haven't lived"

OP's tweet reads: "The simplicity of Australian white people food. Everyone knows that Australian white people food is super simple, but when I saw my coworker's lunch I was still shocked. Mushrooms from the supermarket, straight from the box, added directly to a wrap. I asked him whether mushrooms can be eaten raw. He said he'd been eating them raw for years and was doing fine."

Comment: "Pretty normal. They even eat green beans raw. 20 years ago, the people at my bro's place even ate yuanxiao [glutinous rice dough dumplings] uncooked. Anyways, I feel like foreigners don't like eating food unless they're about to starve. If they could live on alcohol, they definitely wouldn't eat at all"

Image text: "Lunch: a head of raw lettuce wrapped around some ham with mustard drizzled on top"

OP's tweet reads: "I guess I've seen the pinnacle of white people food today. The locals always come up with new moves to surprise me"

"On the other hand, Chinese people living overseas only have to heat up in a normal lunch at the office to invoke the shock and awe of their foreign coworkers."

OP's tweet reads: "Re: about my lunch shocking my white coworkers. Everyone knows that white people don't have taste buds, they only eat to stay alive. "Coworker A: porridges. Oats + honey + milk + salt + microwave for 3 min. "Coworker B: some kind of canned rice + canned tuna, microwave for 2 min. "Coworker C: pita bread with dip; with a couple of cherry tomatoes/cucumber. "Coworker D: mini pizza: base + sauce + cheese, baked "I've been here for most of one year, these guys eat the same thing every day. But today was different, today everyone brought food, a boxed proper meal: pasta. But I'm the undefeated mystical Oriental lady, made a whole table [of food] appear in the blink of an eye."

"In China, the concept of a filling lunch is deeply ingrained in people's minds, as well as the habit of having a staple of rice or noodles etc. with every meal. But in Europe and the US, lunches are usually simple and light, and they don't have the custom of taking a siesta, so eating lightly helps maintain focus, prevent drowsiness, and save time. And so, these dietary differences have led to culture shock. "What's more interesting is, recently the phrase 'white people food' has spread to become a style of cuisine that everyone is imitating. Netizens have begun a deep dive into all different kinds of white people food. It's like a door has been opened into a new world."

OP's tweet reads: "After entering a state of 'eating to stay alive', I found out white people food is actually good. Ate the same thing every day and didn't puke. I just play on my phone a bit and the food is ready. It's sustenance, that's all."

Commenter: "After you give up on the pursuit of flavor, the world will open up to you. Cold vegetables + chicken breast are so good."

Following this trend going viral, "white people food" got spread to the foreign web. Foreign netizens' reactions were too funny. One user tweets:
"Not only were foreigners not offended, they've long since accepted the designation of "white people food", even going so far as to mock it themselves.
"After hearing about Chinese interest in white people food, white people didn't hesitate to offer instruction and started sharing recipes for authentic white people food."

Additional context:

  • The reactions are partially because raw veggies are a terrible lunch, but also because vegetables in Chinese cuisine are almost always eaten fully cooked, due to food safety and culinary tradition. Raw vegetables are for livestock and Westerners.
  • the Chinese tweets in the article which have location tags are all tagged with non-American countries (Switzerland, England, Germany, Denmark, and multiple from Australia). There's no "it's just the Americans"-ing your way out of this one.

please god above can someone explain to me why we're still working on self driving cars when trains exist

Avatar

"we're training them to interpret road signs!" Train goes same place every day. No road signs.

"when forced to choose between old lady and child, which is more ethical for the car to hit?" Fence around train track. Nobody on the road.

"people with disabilities preventing them from driving themselves can be independent" Yes but also. Train.

"reduces the dangers of fatigue with long distance trucking" Train.

"the technology is not yet price effective for the average driver" Train.

Seriously come on choo choo bitches let's goooooooooo

We will never invent a car that's as eco-friendly as increasing our rail infrastructure.

Over here in the US, freight companies own almost all the rails, and lease out a pittance to Amtrak and other passenger rail.

Big things are happening on Reddit.

You're missing the best part. This was in response to a statement by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman (quote from The Verge):

"“It’s like a protest in a city that goes on too long, and the rest of the citizens of the city would like to go about their lives,” he said to me in an interview on Thursday. When I pointed out that top posts on r/all were about the protests, he noted that those posts didn’t allow comments. “If there were comments on there, I bet I can tell you what those comments would say. They would say “knock this off, it’s annoying.”"

In response to this, r/pics and r/gifs moderators decided to hold a poll to decide the future of the subreddit, and the results are clear:

  • r/pics: return to normal, -2,329 votes; “only allow images of John Oliver looking sexy,” 37,331 votes.
  • r/gifs: return to normal, -1,851 votes; only feature GIFs of John Oliver, 13,696 votes.

Steve Huffman is a fucking idiot who hates his site's users, and John Oliver is fucking sexy.

If you remove everything “problematic” toward women and minorities from sincere historical fiction I am biting you biting you biting you.

Sometimes “he would not fucking say that” is when the guy living in 1852 is a third wave feminist.

The Music Man revival making Shipoopi a song about respecting women is killing me

Okay this is significantly more funny.

life on earth isn't all too bad but I'd be lying if i said i wouldn't leave in a heartbeat if it meant i could be some woodland creachure in a fantasy setting

i don't want a career i want to be a blupee

I am going to stomp you to death with my hooves

“Once.” I’m pretty sure you did it more than once.

Anyway, that’s y’all’s future around this guy. Check your insurance, and good luck!

I know youtube comment sections notoriously bad and the site is increasingly becoming a cesspool where the algorithm pushes hard-right content on your no matter what kind of videos you watch

But then I read the comments on one of those sludge-style reddit narrations about a guy writing a sob story about how he's the victim for leaving his terminally ill wife.

I was expecting at least some of the comments to tear him apart, but everything was sympathetic to him. The man leaving his dying wife. How he's such a fucking martyr. I...

It's somehow worse than I thought.

Doesn’t YouTube let the video owner delete comments? So the guy may have just deleted everything that criticized him?

"Children shouldn't be transitioning. They're too young to make decisions that can cause permanent damage to their bodies that they'll regret."

- parents who allow or sometimes even force their children to play football

- Parents who put cochlear implants in their child's skull before that kid can decide if they want to be hearing and be potentially limited in some kinds of medical procedures, activities and whether or not their sole implant provider will still be able to provide maintenance their entire life.

- Parents who choose surgery for their infant intersex child because it's 'not normal' to be born with body parts that don't match rigid ideas in the societal and medical fields of 'correct physical attributes for either male or female genitalia'. That kid didn't consent to the permanent changes their parents and doctors forced on their bodies before they were old enough to understand what it was about and choose for themselves.

- Parents who allow or even force their child to learn ballet which causes permanent damage to your feet.

- etc.

Parents who put cochlear implants in their child's skull before that kid can decide if they want to be hearing

If a kid can’t hear well between about age 1 and 2, they’ve got practically nil chance of understanding speech for the rest of their lives. This is the time period of the “speech explosion” when the parts of the brain responsible for speech processing rapidly develop.

So I could say that preventing parents from making this decision railroads the kid into the capital-D Deaf community for the rest of their lives. Which drastically limits their opportunities, because let’s face it, our society is broken in that way (ASL should be required IMHO) and there’s no revolution coming to right every wrong.

It’s a loaded framing, like some “pro-life” arguments which hinge on the “desires of the unborn child”.

The fact is that there simply isn’t a good answer. And there is simply no way to explain this to a child at that age.

and be potentially limited in some kinds of medical procedures, activities and whether or not their sole implant provider will still be able to provide maintenance their entire life.

That happens regardless of age and has a lot more to do with capitalism and IP laws than “abusive” parents.

Full disclosure: I have cochlear implants and face all those same issues despite being an adult.

Nobody should be using GPT detectors for anything important.

This is from a recent study that found that GPT detectors were misclassifying writing by non-native English speakers as AI-generated 48-76% of the time (!!!), compared to 0%-12% for native speakers.

It is irresponsible to use AI-generated text detectors as evidence of academic misconduct, and that's putting it mildly.
