unfriendly reminder that hans asperger was a literal nazi who decided that lsn autistics are the only ones who deserve to live. if you didn't know, now you do. if you did know and still call yourself an "aspie" go fuck yourself

today, april 11th, is the anniversary of Mel Baggs' death. Mel Baggs was one of the early founders of the neurodiversity movement and believed that no one was too disabled for human rights, something that modern nd movements fail to understand to this day. sie was so instrumental to my understanding of literally everything. sie died from medical ableism and neglect during the beginning of the pandemic. we would be nowhere fucking near where we are now without hir. i've decided to make a masterlist of some of my favorite posts of hirs, organized into different categories.

(some of these are listed in more than one category because they overlap so much)

here are some of the "essentials" (what you might have already read by hir/should read first):

here are some of hir beautiful writings on perceiving/communicating with hir environment as an autistic person, and on communication in general:

on personhood and who has the authority to take it away:

on institutions and the I/DD service system:

on online social justice communities/their inaccessibility:

misc:

this is hir poems and creative works:

this is hir writing on autistics.org:

may hir memory be a blessing/revolution.

I am on my knees begging, begging people to remember disabled people in the LGBTQ+ community this month. Please don't leave us to die.

COVID never ended and it made many people immunocompromised. Wear a mask at Pride events (and other places too). Yes, even if it makes you uncomfy or doesn't match your outfit.

Some anti-trans laws are specifically targeting mentally disabled people, arguing that we're not capable of making decisions about our own bodies and thus should not be allowed to medically transition. Include us in discussions about trans legislation.

Disabled people already face high discrimination in work and housing, and it's worse for those who are LGBTQ+. Stand up for your disabled and LGBTQ+ peers.

Some disabled people with caretakers can't come out because the people they depend on aren't safe. Support closeted LGBTQ+ people.

The insurance companies that always find a reason not to cover gender-affirming surgery are the same ones that always find a reason not to cover medication or therapy or mobility aids. Have some solidarity with disabled people who have to fight against the same greedy pigs you do.

It breaks my heart seeing so-called leftists throwing their disabled siblings to the wolves. You like to say that you'd punch a Nazi, throw bricks at police cars, fight tooth and nail for the rights of LGBTQ+ people... But the moment it concerns disabled LGBTQ+ people, you drop your support like a rock. Your hypocrisy is disgusting, and it's going to kill many people in the LGBTQ+ community this Pride month unless you take a moment to realize that, whether you like it or not, some of us are disabled and we don't deserve to die for that.

this is your reminder that if you're going to be posting spiderverse gifs / clips you NEED to tag them as flashing, eyestrain, etc.

seizures can kill. the lives of your disabled friends and followers are more important than a movie.

also, do NOT tag them as epilepsy, seizure, photo-sensitivity, etc. people use these tags to find other people like them. by putting them in these tags you are endangering them.

Warning: do not delete any sideblogs

I’ve been seeing it happen to a handful of people, but apparently if you try to delete your sideblog you will end up deleting your MAIN tumblr account entirely as well I don’t know if this is a bug or something, but I’ve seen it happen to ~4 people now, so until this possible bug gets worked out do NOT delete any of your sideblogs unless you want to risk deleting your account entirely

Reminder that miles is not only a genius academically but also incredibly observant. This dude got away from ALL the spiders in a place he had never been before, lured them away from a machine he’s seen operate ONCE to use CORRECTLY(ish) on himself, and figured out how to fuck Miguel’s suit with his electric powers that he’s had to figure out all on his own!

ok so this is TOTALLY AN ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE SPOILER

you’ve been warned… seriously

like i mean it

OK LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!!
i’m having some thinky thoughts about the canon events and how they work, specifically in Miles’s case.
Miguel mentioned that canon events MUST occur or the realm will unravel and such because those are the rules and that’s how it is but isn’t Miles already breaking the rules by simply EXISTING as Spider-Man? I mean Miguel L I T E R A L L Y says just that very thing (about him being an anomaly) directly to Miles.
The spider that bit him wasn’t from
his world in the first place it was from Earth 42 (which is why he got sent to Earth 42 in the Go Home Machine) and he was never actually supposed to be spider-man like at all, so Miles literally even being like 🧍🏿 is breaking the rules so who’s to say that canon events don’t even apply to him anymore. I mean he already did loose his uncle so there’s one right there anyway.
just some thoughts, what do y’all think?

Across the Spider-verse spoilers

Okay so I might just be an idiot but if Miles was never meant to be spider-man in the first place, why is Miguel so certain that the Spider-Man canon events will effect him the same way

Like Miguel is so adamant that Miles IS NOT Spider-Man but the typical canon events would only be present if he was accepted as his universe’s spider-man which wouldn’t actually make him an anomaly

So either Miles isn’t actually an anomaly and then his stopped canon events will be an anomaly OR Miles is an anomaly and therefore his dad not dying won’t actually be an anomaly because he isn’t Spider-Man

i actually really do love the solidarity that was seen in atsv when it came to hobie and margo/spiderbyte having miles' back. there's always something so powerful about specific minority groups seeing each other and knowing they have to stand by them. whether it's the black community, the latine community, any type of minority group just taking one look at their brethren and going "i got you" is ughhhhh good shit. i eat it up every time

Across the Spiderverse hit me in the heart personally. Never feeling like you truly belong and institutions + communities excluding you because you're not like everyone else. It's a struggle. My personal identity isn't truly binary and conclusive.

Seeing that through miles was heartbreaking and relateable. Rio's speech to him is what us bipoc get told by our parents once we venture out into the world like college and employment.

Sort of spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The idea of Miles as an “anomaly” who “shouldn’t exist” but may therefore have the autonomy to change the way things work really reminded me of one of my favourite Sailor Moon sort of fan theories, that she is a similar kind of anomaly - that there was no Sailor Moon in the Silver Millennium, and Luna created her inadvertently because she has brain scramblies from being in cold storage for centuries and doesn’t remember there shouldn’t be a Sailor Guardian for the Moon.

ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE SPOILERS////

Okay Miguel’s story isn’t making sense. Because hold the fuck up. In ITSV, from what I remember at least, the collider is what was threatening Miles’ universe. Not the Spider-People being there. It was threatening to their own lives because of the glitching thing and they didn’t have stabilizers like in this movie. And granted, we don’t know how long Miguel was in that universe. But if Peter B. Parker stayed on Earth 1610 for let’s say a month, he would have died from being the wrong universe. But that alone wouldn’t cause Miles’ world to collapse.

So you can argue “Miguel was there for a long period of time.” But then if Miguel just replacing himself caused that universe to collapse, a whole radioactive spider from another universe bit Miles who was not supposed to be Spider-Man. Causing Earth 42 Miles and Earth 1610 Miles to switch fates. Causing Earth 42 to not even have a Spider Man. This happened over a year ago. To me, that’s an even bigger shift from canon than Miguel replacing his dead self. But if what he’s saying is completely true, the second Miles got bit shouldn’t Earth 42 have collapsed?

Not to mention yes Miles saved the officer and girl in Mumbattan but nothing happened. Technically, he interfered with Pav’s canon event, didn't he? Miles’ entire existence does not follow canon. Miguel is hiding some shit or missing the bigger picture of what he did wrong that caused that universe to disappear.

Or is it since Miles is like the successful anomaly, only he can successfully mess with canon?

miguel o'hara spent the whole movie being a tyrant and projecting/dumping his emotional trauma on to miles, and then had the AUDACITY to be upset at miles for not listening. like mfer... the best chance to get miles to listen literally wouldve come from actually allowing peter b. to visit him and explain the situation. you know, trust miles with the responsibility of information that literally directly involves his life. especially coming from someone who would've had his trust.

but no, let's shut him out, keep him in the dark and then threw it in his face last minute that his dad needs to die for his personal growth as a hero and the stability of his universe, TOTALLY GOING TO WORK OUT

Why Spider-People Suffer

Subtitled: How “Othering” Miguel Killed Hundreds of Cops

I loved seeing Miguel getting othered by his fellow spider-people so casually during this movie, both intentionally and unintentionally, and I believe it’s the reason he convinced everyone their loved ones had to die.
