she/her. what's in a description? please pardon my literal and non-literal french. see 'about me' page for more.

every time i see discourse about pedohysteria amidst a trans genocide i think about that news article from 2016 about the mexican immigrant who voted for trump because trump said he’d get rid of all the “bad hombres” from mexico, only to be deported himself because it turns out what trump was really saying was that he wanted to deport all mexicans, not just “the bad ones”

not just him, but there were many other examples too, like white conservatives who have mexican immigrant friends and family or people in the community important to them who were mexican immigrants, and they voted for trump because they thought trump was just getting rid of “criminals”, and then they regret it when their families and communities get torn apart by deportations of their spouses, their friends, their favourite restaurant owners, etc.

anyways, i hope young queers, trans people esp, understand that when conservatives talk about “pedophiles” and “groomers”, they’re not talking about actual child abusers, they’re talking about all queer people. they’re talking about all trans people. it’s why in florida, they’re categorizing “drag” as a child sex crime, and making sex crimes against children punishable by death. they’re trying to execute every single trans person, and that’s just the rhetoric they’re using

so stop buying into the pedohysteria. it’s easy to think “well, i’m not a pedophile, so i’ll be safe” when you don’t realize that in the eyes of conservatives, every single queer person is a pedophile and deserves death, and contributing to their rhetoric by trying to figure out which trans woman is a pedophile is just accelerating your own march to the gallows

When I was in school, the argument – and in fact the standard belief – was that no gay person, ever, could be a teacher, because all gay people were pedophiles and groomers. It was for the “safety of children.” Lesbians and gay men couldn’t be allowed in locker rooms with “normal” people because we would ogle and assault them. Every gay, every lesbian, every trans person, every bi person (pan didn’t really exist as a term then) had the assumption of being a sex offender just waiting for an opportunity.

Literally everything they say about trans people now, they said about gay people 30 years ago.

There are people right now in government trying to outlaw gay marriage again, saying that Pete Buttigieg – the human equivalent of a Wonder Bread pb&j sandwich, as wholesome in image as they come – shouldn’t be allowed to raise his children because he’s abusing his children by raising them. People on Twitter have started openly calling for rounding up and executing anyone who ever helped a minor access HRT - parents, doctors, nurses, the receptionist who checked us in for my daughter’s appointments - and while those are only random people online, that isn’t a thing you saw happening frequently just a couple of years ago. Louder voices have started calling for mentally ill people – starting with trans and gay people – to lose our rights to vote.

Do I think queer people are being rounded up right now? No. Do I see the rhetoric escalating? Yes. Is it aimed at all of us? Oh yes.

Groomer, pedo, degenerate, freak: they mean all of us. There are no exceptions. If you think there are, you’re fooling yourself.

Join, or Die.

One time I heard a dude online compare new and obscure LGBT terminology to newspeak. This I think is one of the biggest examples I have seen of people with their whole chest ignoring the basic themes of 1984.

In 1984 the whole point of newspeak was that it shrinks. Ideas that could once be communicated now cannot. Everything is simplified as much as possible. You cannot explain complicated ideas of freedom or equality because the words no longer exist, or they don’t mean what they once did.

More specifically, there is canonically no word for “gay” in 1984. There are only two words for the entire spectrum of sexuality. “goodsex” and “sexcrime”. If you’re gay it’s the exact same as being a pedophile. And those are is the exact same as cheating on your wife, which is the exact same daring to fuck your wife just because you feel like it. Which is no different than literally any sex act that might offend big brother.

Do you see what’s happening? In 1984 can no longer ask your wife to peg you or something because the word for pegging is the exact same word for pedophile. And you can’t come out as gay because all you can say is that you did a criminal sex act, which means you cannot make a case for your rights either.

Inventing made up words to describe obscure things that previously lacked words would literally be a perfect remedy to newspeak. This language would counter every barrier to communicating the necessary concepts. Because it’s what literally every normal non-dystopian language does.

Keep this in mind especially in regards to what's happening in Florida right now. They associate LGBT+ content with grooming, define it as pedophilia or child abuse or sexual crimes or etc. Then they pass laws calling for sex offenders to be executed. Bigots or morons claim "Oh, why are you against these anti-child abuse laws?!" Because the state is trying to redefine LGBT+ activity and individuals as being the same as child abuse. For all the bluster and anger over "Grrr, words don't mean anything anymore! These terms I grew up with don't matter anymore!" the truth is THEY are the ones trying to limits what words mean because they want to associate certain groups of people with evil people to make more innocent/ignorant individuals be okay with hurting those groups of people.

In linguistics, we have a concept called The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. The basics of this concept are some degree of "If you don't have a word for it, you can't conceive of it."

Now, there are several degrees of this. The conception above is the strictest example of it, which is generally not accepted among linguists. A looser definition might be something like "It's much, much harder to talk about concepts you don't have words for." (For example, people who speak a language with more color words distinguish colors more quickly/easily than those who speak words with fewer color words).

Newspeak is weaponized Sapir-Whorf. To purposely restrict vocabulary to eliminate any thoughts of rebellion.

As pointed out above, progressives have been consistently adding vocabulary to the world, to better voice the thoughts and feelings of the oppressed and non-mainstream.

You work as the minor villain every new hero has to beat for their first battle.

She had always been something of a figure of fun. Obscurata, with her melodramatic latin name and power to make darkness, who robbed banks and liquor stores and could be foiled by a teenager in a home-made costume.

Tank had encountered her years ago, when he was a teenager in a homemade costume, and foiled her on his second attempt. It was almost a rite of passage - if you could take on Obscurata, you were ready for the life. Anyone who couldn’t take her down in five or six attempts tended to quit.

It had been a surprise to see that rippling dark cape here, and a disappointment. He had... not a fondness, exactly, but a soft spot for Obscurata. She wasn’t one of the really bad ones. Older heroes steered the young ones towards her, knowing that they’d come out of a fight with her bruised but whole. She never killed. She never even seriously harmed. He hated to see her working with the Claw, who did.

He tried not to let it distract him. Claw had taken a girl - Lily, one of a trio of new-minted girl heroes - in Tank’s city. He’d been keeping an eye on the girls, and he’d dropped everything to go in pursuit when he realized it was Claw who had Lily. Obscurata might have bruised and frightened her a little, but Claw’s captives usually wound up dead... or worse.

A lot of artpieces at the Met affected me and how I view my own art, but none more than this portrait by Cézanne (of Hortense Fiquet):

.....He didn't finish the hands.

Because hands are hard.

And it was like being slapped in the face.

His name is in art history books, and he's exposed in one of the biggest museums on Earth, and he didn't draw the hands.

Omg Cézanne is just a dude. They're all just a dude (gender neutral). They're all just people drawing stuff, like we are all just people drawing stuff.

Maybe I can stop worrying about the quality of my art and just draw stuff.

i think one of the most important things you learn about making connections with others is that a significant portion of the time people just do not know theyre doing what theyre doing

sometimes someone is acting selfish because they just didnt think you had any interest in what theyre hogging. sometimes you dont get invited to the movies because your friend could have sworn that you said no. sometimes you think someone is mad at you because theyre bad at hiding how little sleep they got. we are all like little worlds that briefly crash into one another from time to time and we just arent physically capable of seeing the whole picture at once in those moments. and learning that really changed everything!

Oldest evidence of the controlled use of fire to cook food

The remains of a huge carp fish (2 meters/6.5 feet long), analyzed by the Hebrew University, Bar-Ilan University Tel Aviv University, in collaboration with Oranim Academic College, the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research institution, the Natural History Museum in London, and the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, mark the earliest signs of cooking by prehistoric human to 780,000 years ago, predating the available data by some 600,000 years.

A close analysis of the remains of a carp-like fish found at the Gesher Benot Ya'aqov (GBY) archaeological site in Israel shows that the fish were cooked roughly 780,000 years ago. Cooking is defined as the ability to process food by controlling the temperature at which it is heated and includes a wide range of methods. Read more.

Holy SHIT this is cool!! Y'all! Y'ALL!! This is HUGE!! Our ancestors were having a nice grill out 600,000 years EARLIER than we thought!!! We went from thinking this was 180,000 years ago to fucking 780,000 years ago!! That’s mind-blowing!!! Like… just think about the difference between starting a 180k fic (already a sizable investment) vs getting into a 780k MONSTER!! And… that’s just words! Not years!! I’m blown away!!

ETA2: See also this press release on the discovery.

ETA3: And here’s the link to the paper at Nature. (Sorry, friends, it’s a paywalled article.) :/

(I’m going hunting for the original paper, now. Because I want to know what species that carp was. After all… until you know the species, you can’t come up with a decent recipe…)

Per this: they mention two likely species (without specifically correlating them to the teeth they were analyzing in this study) as Luciobarbus longiceps, known casually as the Jordan barbel, and Carasobarbus canis, the Jordan himri. While both these fish are members of the Cyprinidae family, which includes carp, they’re not all that carpish. (And the genus name of Luciobarbus suggests that it’s a bit more pike-shaped; Esox lucius is the true [northern] pike.)

…Anyway, barbel are a bit more like perch, if you ask me. …But in any case, both are firm-fleshed fish that would probably bake up nicely. (Some people online can be found muttering about a slightly earthy flavor to the fish, which can sometimes have to do with the quality of the water where they’re found… and as a result, most of the recipes I turned up in a quick search involve simmering them in flavored stocks of one kind or another: like this one via the old Foody site, now only available at the Wayback Machine – one of Mrs. Beeton’s recipes. Or search for “barbel” in this page from the Illustrated London Cookery Book.)

Kinda thinking of that post that’s saying the Pokemon in Detective Pikachu are good because they’re “cartoony” when in reality they’re pretty realistic, but keep a good balance between their cartoonishness without the creepy hyperrealistic renderings we’re used to seeing out of edgelord artists. Ironically, the people who did this movie took a lot of cues from an artist on Deviantart who did hyperrealistic-looking Pokemon.

I dunno, these look pretty realistic to me. The key is they render the cartoony elements (like Majikarp’s eyes and the shape of his fins) pretty accurately so it doesn’t just look like a rat hauling a weird fish, you can tell that’s a Pikachu and a Majikarp.

They also did a good job keeping most of the cute Pokemon looking fairly cute,

although you can still get moments where Aipom and Jigglypuff appear legitimately creepy and threatening when angered.

Then there are Pokemon who are odd-looking because they were always meant to appear odd-looking

And the ‘scary’ Pokemon actually look like dangerous, powerful monsters!

What I like about these designs is that they’ve got a good balance of traits that make them instantly recognizable enough that any Pokemon fan can name them at a glance, but given just enough nuance and realistic elements that presumably wouldn’t render very well in a cartoon. (For example, the little hairs on the inner part of Jigglypuff’s ears, Pikachu’s fluffy fur, and Charizard’s rough, dinosaur-like scales).

You can tell the people behind the design choices are really passionate about Pokemon and wanted to create characters you could easily suspend your disbelief to accept and also fully enjoy with the original ‘flavor’ of Pokemon as a long-time fan.

And anyway I just wanted to talk about how cool that all was.

I never get tired of the thing where fantasy books name something by just calling it a word but capitalising it. Like oh shit, that person is a Wielder. The supernatural ability to see beyond matter called the Sight. Forces of Light and Darkness. The prohibited art of Knowing. A place simply known as The Blight. Awesome and horrible forces. The Force. You know something's getting bat shit wild when Fantasy Capitalisation comes into the picture. As in capitalising the letters, not the unholy act of seizing fantasy itself in order to churn profit off of it.

That is the work of evil creatures, like The Mouse.
