“loving you was like setting myself on fire, day after day, night after night, all for someone who kept close simply to stay warm. loving myself was like dousing my body in rosewater, gentle relief from burns that did not deserve a place on my skin.”

The absence of hurt doesn’t always feel like relief. Draw your hand from an ice bucket and your skin smarts, then adjusts, and you forget how the ache felt. It’s natural, after you feel something so strongly, to worry that neutrality is a symptom, but most of the time, existing should feel like nothing, in the way that breathing feels like nothing.
