I'm all for natural remedies and traditional medicine, but I think when your "natural remedy" is based on the idea that water can become medicinal by being in the presence of a teeny itty bit amount of something, then it's probably bullshit and you're getting scammed. Go buy some ibuprofen or see a doctor.

Things that can be true simultaneously:

  • The idea that Western medicine is the be-all-end-all of science is based around white supremacy and elitism. Traditional medicine DOES have its place and is incredibly useful, especially when combined with the emotional, social, and spiritual effect it has on people from those cultures and communities. Many people also choose to combine their traditional cultural medicine with Western medicine and that should be respected by doctors.
  • Homeopathy is a fucking scam.

was originally gonna go with "dog" but decided to go for a longer word with more "reasonable" mispronunciations instead, but that ended up backfiring and now like half the people on this post think i actually pronounce it like this. guess you could say it was a bit of a. a b. it was a

it was a bit of a self-own

READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

  1. why might op have said that she wanted to choose a word with "more 'reasonable' mispronounciations"? what could the quotes around "reasonable" indicate? why did she say mispronunciations instead of pronounciations?
  2. op writes that the post "backfired" and now "half the people on this post think i actually pronounce it like this." what might the word "backfired" mean in this context?
  3. what words could "self-own" sound similar to, and how could that relate to the rest of the post?

bell hooks mentioned going through a time in her life where she was severely depressed and suicidal and how the only way she got through it was through changing her environment: She surrounded her home with buddhas of all colors, Audre Lorde’s A Litany for Survival facing her as she wakes up, and filling the space she saw everyday with reinforcing objects and meaningful books. She asks herself each day, “What are you going to do today to resist domination?” I also really liked it when she said that in order to move from pain to power, it is crucial to engage in “an active rewriting of our lives.”

I have come to think of the suicidal impulse as the brain waving a flag to say three things:

  • something needs to change here
  • this is urgent
  • I don’t know how to do it

death is the ultimate metaphor for drastic change. it’s a general specific. whatever your problems are, it is very likely that dead people don’t have to deal with them. a real solution to your problems may demand a very narrow range of action that’s likely to be out of reach at this moment, but death is sold on every street corner, so it feels like a more realistic fantasy than happiness.

you don’t really want to die per se but it’s also not completely random chemicals swamping your brain for no reason. you want the pain to stop, you want to be somewhere else, you want to be someone else. it’s urgent. you don’t know how to do it. the end is not the end but a means that feels within your reach right now.

this is the wisdom of bell hooks: daily rituals of meaning and resistance and solidarity are part of slowly building a future where you can make the change you really need. and only alive people can do that. every step you take towards change and power is another step away from death.

The masculine urge to walk into the desert to never return.

The androgynous urge to walk into the ocean to never return.

For the oysters.

I’ve been thinking a lotttt lately about how one of the biggest acts of daily violence that seems normalized as fuck in white dominant neighborhoods is calling the god damn police on people who are simply existing in public/common spaces.

I live in a townhouse complex that is technically private land but its owners are the 68 of us who each own 1/68th of the green space, pool, sidewalks, etc., and pay HOA dues to maintain it all. A lot of people who live in the neighborhood surrounding our complex don’t understand or don’t care that our little sliver of land is not a small public park and they walk their dogs through it, kids ride bikes through it and other normal, harmless things.

The aggression with which particularly white, boomer aged women in the HOA freak the fuck out about “non residents” doing these mundane, non destructive acts on our Facebook HOA group is truly unhinged. Shit like

“Someone is playing with a large dog on the lawn outside my unit! Does anyone recognize them? If this is your guest please notify me immediately or I’ll be calling the police on the trespasser!!!” [Creepy pic taken through her blinds attached]

“A homeless man just passed my unit pushing a shopping cart full of junk! I’ve already called the police but wanted everyone to keep and eye out!”

And my favorite (🙄) “Whose teenagers are using the pool right now??”

Like teenagers?? In my pool?!???? So fucking dumb.

It’s gotten a teensy bit better in more recent years because many of us have intervened when we see posts, begged chronic-cop-callers to stop, etc. A couple of men of color residents went as far as to offer to be “on call” for these ridiculously overly afraid and racist white women so when someone seems shady to them they can call those neighbors who said they’ll talk to the “trespassers” instead of escalating to cops. They shouldn’t have to do that but how kind of them to offer. People are so (rightfully) paranoid their friends visiting will be accosted by the Police Calling Crew that folks routinely post now to let others know who is coming to stay with them or if they’re getting a new roommate we’ll see around, etc. It’s nuts.

How do these creeps surveilling us not get that THEY ARE THE PROBLEM?!

Im learning that way too many of you have no regard for your own safety or the safety of your data and also that you would be found by bailifs in a day

No but really, pro tip. If you never ever respond to your name until you know who is on the phone, then anyone chasing debts cannot confirm that you are at that number.

Caller: "hello, can I speak to [name] / am I speaking with [name]?"

You: "I'd like to know who's calling / who am I speaking with?"

Caller "this is [caller]"

You: "why do you need to speak with [name]?"

Don't give them ANY information about you til you know who they are and why they're calling. Even if you're not in any financial trouble or have any debts this is real good practice

oooh this is good
