Also hey btw

The term “masterpiece” originally and traditionally meant a piece of work that an apprentice or other aspiring craftsman created to show off to his master or the town’s guild. So naturally, it was intended to be the best fucking thing that you could make, demonstrating just how fucking good you are at what you’re making - 100% to flex your skills. And if it was approved, the applicant was accepted as a member of the guild and could now call himself a master, and work in this craft in this city.

So the next time you’re looking at The One Great Thing you made and think “this is it, my masterpiece, I have peaked, it’s all downhill from here”, consider looking it the other way: Making your masterpiece means you’re only getting started.

embracing the patterned ambiguity of gender and sex as more or less social constructs can grant you so much more precision in thinking about so many concepts in science.

like, if there was a study (and I'm just making this up as an example) showing women suffer from mosquito bites more than men do

you could do the ~"Gender Critical"~ thing and go "see!? mosquitoes get it!!"

OR

you could go "that's interesting" and start asking more questions, like:

  • is this data self-reported? controlled?
  • were they studying the women or the mosquitoes?
  • did the study use methods that would let you tell the difference between "being bitten more often" and "noticing bites more often"?
  • did the study include any trans people and were their results any different? if yes were they on HRT or not?
  • how similar were the men and women in aspects other than gender? do we know their social class, jobs, diets, blood types?

because in fact the study i made up just then could lead to a huge variety of conclusions. from my description above you can't tell the difference between studies that show:

  • mosquitoes are attracted to people with higher estrogen levels
  • mosquitoes are opportunistic and women spend more time near mosquito habitats for sociocultural reasons
  • every gender gets bitten about the same amount but men are socialised to pay less attention to physical discomfort so more of them don't notice minor bites compared to women (and by more we mean like 60-40, this is a bell curve thing)
  • we accidentally got heaps of women in the study that have the mosquito's favourite blood type and not so for the men, oops
  • mosquitoes are attracted to people with more x and y in their diets, which is currently mostly women for, again, largely sociocultural reasons

etc etc etc

you're just not going to understand actual Gender Science, and therefore reality, if you can't put "hmm, but what do they mean by woman this time" in your mental toolkit in a relatively neutral way.

Honestly this is a great way of presenting the kind of scientific literacy that is needed in an era of clickbait headlines and sound bites and facts that turn into memes; so much science "news" as reported by mass media distills nuanced studies into easily quotable and shocking one-liners that generally ignore the context behind the statistic.

everything has political content. sorry. theres some guys who get really really angy when you say this but its true

oh was it made? by a person who lives within a social system? using time and/or money? oh then its production has a political economy. hope this helps

Every time I see one of these posts I can’t help but think of someone watching some show made for literal babies or toddlers with a notepad trying to find all the political messages.

very funny to say the sentence ‘show made for literal babies or toddlers’ and not realize that there are many deeply political aspects to the fact that’s a category you can delineate in the first place!

like, genuinely–i think you could stand to benefit from examining why you think the idea that a ‘show for babies’ is a neutral, apolitical thing–why you think that, for example, the construction of ‘the child’ as a social category and as an entertainment industry marketing demographic, exist outside of the sphere of ‘politics’, because any serious examination makes it clear that those things are deeply political in nature. these things do not come from nowhere!

“Politics is the realm of public life in which we all compete and cooperate for resources, rights, responsibilities, and ideals. It is the collective social process of formulating, advocating for, and constructing a vision of society which meets the needs and desires of those within it. We all participate in politics, each and every day. Every argument and discussion, every purchase and donation, every contract signed and agreement made, and every act of public kindness or cruelty is a political act.”

This is actually a 💯💯💯 explanation of historical methodology and the Things you have to understand when questioning and analyzing your sources.

The Kiss of Life - A utility worker giving mouth-to-mouth to co-worker after he contacted a low voltage wire, 1967

Taken in 1967 by Rocco Morabito, this photo called “The Kiss of Life” shows a utility worker named J.D. Thompson giving mouth-to-mouth to co-worker Randall G. Champion after he went unconscious following contact with a low voltage line. Thompson over 400 feet away recognized the critical situation and ran to the pole and scaled it to reach Champion. Realizing champion wasn’t breathing he delivered CPR and chest compression while supporting his friend; super impressive /difficult given the angle (if you get it wrong air goes into the stomach and inflates that instead).

This all happened oddly in Champions work anniversary. And weirder Rocco Morabito, a newspaper photographer who had been covering a strike down the road with eastern freight (this happened in Florida btw) happened to be nearby with his camera in a time that no one carried cameras daily. This photo won him the Pulitzer Prize for journalism photography.

Luthur (Lucy/Arthur) Propaganda

I'm writing this with all the pent-up rage of an entire year of seeing "Lucy's so dumb, she should have picked my favourite suitor" posts and "who should Lucy have chosen?" polls that always result in practically no votes for Arthur.

This is not an anti-Jack or anti-Quincey post by any means, though it may come across as defensive. It is just a pro-let-Lucy-choose-for-herself post. And yes, letting her choose for herself even includes letting her be monogamous when she has made the conscious decision to remain monogamous.
