The Sacred Tree of Takeo Shrine (Takeo’s Okusu Tree) Location: Outside Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden
Over 3000 years old, this camphor tree is the 7th largest tree in Japan. It is 30m tall with a trunk circumference of 20m, its branches span 30m wide from east to west, and 33m wide from north to south. This is the sacred tree of Takeo Shrine, which was built in the Nara period (735 CE). The roots of the tree resemble the feet of elephants and are wrapped in rough bark, with their central section split open near the surface of the ground. Inside is a gaping cavity with an area of 12 tatami mats, which houses a stone shrine deep within.

It’s okay to make digital art that enhances certain aspects of real photos, but please don’t present them as what an animal (or plant, or fungus) actually looks like. There’s already enough separation between what a lot of people think nature is versus what it actually is, and misinformation only serves to widen that gulf. Instead, make sure to highlight and appreciate the beauty of the natural world just as it is so that people can see what they have to look forward to if they’re able to explore the outdoors, whether in person or virtually. And it demonstrates just how much we have to lose if we keep allowing habitat loss (which is the single biggest cause of species endangerment and extinction) and other ecological disasters to keep occurring at their present rate.

“Baikal Zen”: Rocks that have fallen on the ice of Lake Baikal are heated by sunlight and emit infrared rays that melt the ice below. Once the sun is gone, the ice becomes solid again, creating a small support for the rock above.
