Y’all this is like seriously one of my favorite podcasts. Spoiler heavy review here:
-) the sound sfx and sound library hare feels visceral. The flights feel like they got energy when the heroes take off, the punches sound like they hit and hit HARD, the energy beams sound like a river, a torrent of pure power, and the actors are passionate when the lines need it.
The story itself follows a budding lesbian couple who have had each others backs since growing up. Connie’s entire character arc has her progressing first as an unsure hero, then taking on the Mantle of something greater.
One of my favorite grander scope villains mid way in, Jaharrl the Conquerer, is just several shades of funny but also to the degree there’s a deadly seriousness in the room. All the jokes stop and the ones he’s making barely cut the tension.
Another of my favorite villains is Grillmaster. I adore her VA and the villains entire arc of just having a hard time being evil.
It’s moments of peril really sell the stakes, and the villains make me think of The Tick as they range from lethally rascal like (Dr. Menace, Gentleman Steelface) to something scary enough that even as goofy as they can be they’re quick to show you they are going to kill you if given half a chance (Valiant, Jaharrl).
There’s also some damn fine side characters here, from the trio including Lightsmith and Shadowthing, the titanic Queen Sized, and even Moishe and Magnanimous shine in the brightest of ways.
This show is a wonderful little world and I am so blessed to be able to listen to it any time I want on the YouTube. Maybe give it a listen, won’t you?
