Okay but Adventure Time Distant Lands: Together Again really is a very spiritual episode and I think it gives us a relatively intimate view of the writers' perspective on life, death, and rebirth. It actually reminds me a lot of Midnight Gospel, which Pendleton Ward also worked on. This episode gave me more of an existential crisis than I bargained for and it was beautiful.

The idea of different Dead Worlds fitting different stages of spiritual growth, up to and including enlightenment (50th Dead World) and the concept that enlightened beings can choose to be reborn again reminds me a lot of Buddhist beliefs on reincarnation and enlightenment.

Further, the concept of there existing a being so evil and powerful that it should have the capability to stop the cycle of reincarnation and life and death altogether is *Absolutely Terrifying*! Fiction like this gives me chills and I live for it.

sooooo fun that theyre leaning so much into the angle of simon being like intrinsically linked to fionna and cake because he made them kind of in a way. fucking obsessed w the fact that theyre deciding to make this about Parallels between simon and fionna campbell there was a time when it wouldve felt so unexpected but really it just makes a lot of sense. and anyway jts just awesome and its gonna get awesomer. theyre having the reverse experiences of each other (fionna wishing her normal world was more magical and simon wishing his magical life could just be normal) but also both having the exact same experience of “every single day is just the exact same aimless bullshit and pretty much everything i do is making it worse” and God this whole thing is SUCH a fuxcking great setup for real??????

I'm absolutely loving all the parallels between Fionna &Cake and Bee &Puppycat. Mostly because I love both these shows. (And I might relate to the main female character too much)

What I've gleaned from the first 2 episodes.

WAIT. OMG. It took me awhile to process that Fionna and Cake are, indeed, still just in Simon’s mind and not in a parallel sorta universe, and that’s why cheers is the only thing playing and everything is so mediocre in Fionna’s world (because Simon craves the mediocrity so hard rn) BUT! I also get why Fionna, for the past 3 days, has been thinking about Ice Prince and going on adventures with cake!

Simon said that for the past 3 days that kid kept coming up to him asking about Fionna and Cake, and Fionna said she’d been having those dreams for 3 nights, which would imply that the reason Fionna is having those dreams is because Simon keeps thinking about “his” old fan fiction stories and their adventures!

Or maybe I’m wrong about everything- lol

I love Simon saying “I can’t relate to Fionna and Cake anymore” when he and Fionna are clearly having parallel character arcs set up

I like how Fionna and Cake is speedrunning all the things they’re allowed to do with a TV-14 rating.

Blood? Yep.

Drinking? Yep.

Getting tattoos? Yep.

Mild swearing? You pucking bet.

I reckon someone is gonna get in a car and not wear a seatbelt next episode.

I'll make a big post about my thoughts on the F&C eps eventually (spoiler: loved them SO much) but for now THEM!!!!!!!!!!! THEIR FRIENDSHIP WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS OF THE WHOLE THING THEY MEAN THE WORLD TO ME

Funny how these can sound like silly little jokes. Fionna basically dismisses them as idle chatter. But WE know these are all references to what these folks are in the 'original' F&C Timeline/in Ooo. They are just as important as Fionna’s dreams (if not more cause as far as we can tell they are 100% accurate, without Fionna's Sailor Moon Filter on everything).

Everyone in this universe is haunted by memories of their original, magical selves.

Considering how much the horror of Simon being trapped under the Curse of the Ice Crown was first and foremost based around a loss of identity 

It only makes sense that this is still what Simon struggles with now, after being freed.

Simon knows who he’s not. He’s not Ice King. He is Simon Petrikov again. But who is Simon Petrikov now? Because it seems like his current situation has really taken away all of the ways Simon used to define his identity.

‘Simon Petrikov the antiquarian and archeologist’ is… not quite it anymore. His current job is similar, since he’s still teaching people about ages long past. It’s just that now that ancient era is his original world - but it’s clear that’s not quite what he wants to do anymore. Whatever it’s because he can’t get as excited about the 20th century as he could for ‘his’ ancient times, or because he doesn’t really like his new ‘teaching method’ where is quite literally a living museum exhibit.

And what about ‘Simon Petrikov the intellectual researcher of magic and the paranormal?’

Yeah, no chance anymore. Before the Crown, Simon had a real fascination with magic and the supernatural. But now, in the wacky world of Ooo - he has lost that aspect of himself completely. He aches for the mundane.

And then there’s ‘Simon Petrikov the adventurous outdoorsman’, which we only learned about just now.

Which is another aspect of Simon’s identity lost in the new context of Ooo. Simon might’ve been able to brave the elements against rain and mosquitos and poison ivy. But in this world of dragon monsters and shapeshifting bears he is just not able to take it anymore.

‘Simon Petrikov, Marcy’s gentle caretaker’ is right out too. Not only because Simon believes Marceline just doesn’t need him anymore…

But he also doesn’t see himself as capable of helping any little kids anymore - and not just in term of ability…

But also in terms of his own personality. 

Making this little girl cry basically smashed that part of his identity to dust.

And then there’s “Simon Petrikov, Betty Grof’s beloved”, which would be a fool’s errand to keep clinging to…

And yet…

Oh to be an ice person serving cunt
