Max Mayfield had never considered herself lucky.

Sure, when she was back in California and hadn’t yet been introduced to the grotesque term divorce and everything that came with it, she was a lucky kid. Her days were sunny and warm; the scrapes and bruises from her time at the skate park were visible on her frail body, but she welcomed these scrapes and bruises, which were nursed by her doting mother when she came back home.

When her stepfather’s car whizzed past the Welcome to Hawkins! sign, it seems as though all the luck Max had when she was in California vanished.

She lived with her stepfather and step-brother Billy, whom she hated, in a house surrounded by cracked pavement that made skateboarding near impossible. The scrapes and bruises that resulted from skateboarding multiplied, but unlike the ones she got in California, these scrapes and bruises were not welcomed. And instead of her mother taking care of them, it was her who had to learn how to take care of them.

Then, on a fateful day at school, Max encountered a group of lanky, prepubescent boys who called themselves ‘the Party’. And ever since then, her life had changed. (She still hasn’t decided if it was for better or for worse.)

In the midst of fights with the Party, she had been cornered by Lucas at the arcade. Lucas had told her a story that she had a hard time believing — a story involving a girl with telekinetic powers, the story of Will, the boy who came back to life, and monsters from the fictional world of a multiplayer fantasy board game.

Do you accept the risk?

At the time, Max wasn’t taking it seriously. She gave a curt reply and followed Lucas out of the arcade and began the tiring journey to the junkyard with him. 

At the junkyard, she encountered Dustin, a high school senior with insanely ridiculous hair, and a girl who had a Walkman attached to her belt hoops, humming a Pink Floyd song under her breath as she carried pieces of metal towards an abandoned bus.

At the junkyard was where Max realized that she was right: Her luck, which had been fading more and more the farther she was from California, was gone.

Max Mayfield, who had ignored everything Lucas had told her and decided it was pure fiction, came face-to-face with what Dustin affectionately called a demo-dog, saw Will Byers possessed by the Mind Flayer, met Eleven, the girl with powers who was dressed like she just stepped out of an MTV commercial, and decided that the girl with the Walkman attached to her belt loops was the highlight of her eventful day.

Dustin had told her that this wasn’t your first rodeo, either. You had been a member of the party ever since kindergarten, since you were not only Mike Wheeler’s neighbor, but apparently the only girl he tolerates other than Eleven.

When she’d asked him why she never saw her around school with them when they were stalking her, he blushed profusely and admitted that when they’d told you what they were doing, you gave them one hell of an earful and said that you would in no way participate in stalking the new girl. This fact made her like you even more.

Unlike Mike, you sent Max warm smiles and even defended her when Mike decided to become a grade A asshole to her. However, it was only when you unclipped your Walkman from your belt loop and handed it to her when you noticed her leg bouncing up and down that she knew she was absolutely done for.

She took it from your hands and gave you a hesitant glance, but you only grinned. “This is my favorite tape,” you said, moving to sit down next to her. “Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. My dad got me the cassette and vinyl, and it’s awesome. You should give it a listen.”

“Why’re you giving this to me?” Her question was rather hostile, but to her shock, you didn’t seem bothered by it. You just smiled and gave a small shrug.

“You seem pretty nervous, and I don’t blame you, honestly. This shit is… so weird, so I thought you could use a distraction or something. Music helps a lot, especially when it’s Pink Floyd, so…”

Max thanked you and put the headphones on, clicking play on the tape.

After that night, Max had begun to seek you out.

Whenever the nightmares would become unbearable and the screaming matches that occurred with Billy and her stepfather would become too much, she grabbed her skateboard, ran across the cracked pavement of Cherry Hill Lane and begun skating until she reached the cul-de-sac where you resided.

You had made it a habit of leaving open your window for her, even though your father stayed late and made it clear again and again that he doesn’t mind it if Max uses the door like any normal person, even if she comes in after midnight.

It was in your room that Max had felt the safest. It was in your room that you had solved endless algebra equations in the midst of laughter and dramatized renditions of Shakespearean quotes (mostly from you) of how unbearable school is. It was in your room that Max had cried endless tears and confided in you.

It was in your room that Max had said fuck it and kissed you. And when she’d pulled away, you giggled like a lovesick schoolgirl — which you are! — and kissed her again, and again, and again.

It was then that the realized that ever since she’d met you, Max had begun to consider herself lucky again.

SlytherClaw Analysis

Many people are familiar with the four Hogwarts Houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. However, it is always impossible to put people into these categories. Nobody is 100% these houses, and that is why we have Hybrid Hogwarts Houses.

I have discussed Ravenclaw x Gryffindor and Ravenclaw x Hufflepuff, but we now have Slytherin x Ravenclaw.

Slytherins are known for being ambitious, cunning, and have a dark reputation. However, they are some of the most determined and confident people out there.

They want to be the best of the best. Because of constant practice and knowing their strengths, they possess self-confidence. Ravenclaws can also be ambitious, but it comes from learning as much as possible about a given subject. Their confidence comes from this bevvy of knowledge. As a SlytherClaw, nothing gets in your way. You are not afraid to go down the rabbit hole and build yourself up. You aren’t afraid to take risks if it means you will be the best version of yourself.

·       Analytical – This can go hand in hand with ambition. Slytherins are known to analyse a situation and work it to their advantage. This can be learning a person’s weaknesses and strengths and using that to your advantage. Or knowing how society works and adjusting accordingly. Ravenclaws look at a subject from every angle so they can find the why of it all.  They will experiment, research, and interrogate as much as possible. If you are a SlytherClaw, you may tend to overanalyse, but this means that you are careful. You are less likely to mess things up, and you usually get what you want in the end.

·       Perfectionist – Ravenclaws and Slytherins often hold themselves to high standards. Ravenclaws need everything to be a certain way, while Slytherin’s self-confidence means that they are constantly improving. As a SlytherClaw, you are meticulous in your work, but this means you can be rigid as well. You may be able to challenge yourself, but this can also mean that it is doubly hard on you when you fail.

·       Friendships – Slytherins and Ravenclaws are usually aloof. But that does not mean they are not afraid to let others in, especially if they are people with common goals and interests. As a SlytherClaw, you may be picky about your friends, but you know who you want and how they can help you in life. And the best part: they know the real you, and they love you for it.

·       Cunning/Cleverness – This relates to Analytical. As a Slytherin, you tend to focus on the how of a situation or a person. Ravenclaws focus on the why of a problem or a person. A Slytherin would learn everything they can about a person, society, or their chosen career. A Ravenclaw would want to know everything they can, period. So, as a SlytherClaw, you have a deep understanding of the world, especially people. So, as a SlytherClaw, you may have a meaningful perception of the world, especially people. You not only know about social mores, but you also understand why they are there in the first place and how they can help you advance or how they can be taken down.

Conflicts You May Face

·       Progress vs Tradition – Slytherin is often more traditional, valuing history and artefacts. They tend to look to the past for ways to navigate their reputation in the present. Ravenclaws, however, look for alternative pathways. They think about the future and how they can change the present to match their vision. As a SlytherClaw, you may understand that the past is not always a bad thing, but you may want the future to be so much more. You may have difficulty reconciling these oft-conflicting viewpoints, paralysing you in the present.

·       Risk vs Caution – This has to do with the conflict styles of both Houses. Slytherins are more aggressive than Ravenclaws. If the situation calls for it, they will fight their way out. They do not go picking fights, but they do finish them. Ravenclaws tend to avoid the conflict altogether, sometimes by ending the battle before it can even begin. As a SlytherClaw, you may find yourself torn between taking action or stepping back. You may want to take a chance, especially if you will come out on top. But your Ravenclaw side will ask you, ‘is it really worth it?’.

·       Reputation vs Authenticity – Slytherins are known for cultivating a reputation, sometimes keeping themselves distant to maintain an air of mystery. Slytherins are good at playing different roles according to what is needed of them. Ravenclaws are sometimes mysterious, but they are unabashedly themselves when approached. As a SlytherClaw, you may feel conflicted about how much you want to show the world and whether it will be well-received or not.
