you understand

Controversial opinion, but I prefer Reddit refugees to Twitter refugees.

Reddit was never about clout. No one really follows anyone on reddit. Reddit is barely for posting, as most people are lurkers. Like Tumblr, it doesn't really have a character limit, so users can just go nuts in the discourse. And sure. It can be just bad discourse.

But at least it's not fucking truncated like Twitter and TikTok discourse. At least you can have actual discourse on reddit.

Reddit was also about having a very niche specific weird interest and sharing it with other weirdos and fans of that niche very specific interest.

How is that so dissimilar from Tumblr?

I welcome them more than I welcome Twitter users.

If you have seen Ted Lasso you may have noticed these unusual microphones used by the football commentators.

Despite being a microphone nerd, I had never seen anything like them before. So I decided to go into research mode and discovered these microphones are quite fascinating.

They are called "Lip-Ribbon" or "Commentator's" microphones.

They were specially designed by the BBC in the 1950s for extremely noisy environments. Soccer Football stadiums have peaked at 130 decibels so they needed something that would not get overwhelmed in that circumstance.

They use several very clever techniques to make sure only the voice is picked up and everything else is rejected.

First, they use a bidirectional polar pattern.

That means it will accept sound from two directions, but reject any sound coming in from the sides. And since the diaphragm is only exposed on one side, that helps reject sound coming from the other direction.

Next, the microphone is not very sensitive so you literally have to hold it up to your lips (hence "lip-ribbon") in order for your voice to have enough sound energy to vibrate the diaphragm.

That top part rests directly on your lip and there is a little pop filter to keep your plosives in check.

There is a built-in high pass filter so it rejects any sound below the frequencies typically used by the human voice.

But my favorite trick... a labyrinthian internal baffle system.

(I found a diagram of this when researching but then I lost the tab and I cannot find it again. So you'll just have to accept this crude photoshop I did in 30 seconds to help you understand.)

Sound is energy. And that energy is diminished the farther it travels. The inverse square law for sound states that the intensity of sound decreases by approximately 6 dB for each doubling of distance from the sound source. Sound also diminishes when it reflects off a surface.

That is a very sciency way of saying... make sounds go through a tiny maze and only sounds with the most energy will prevail.

So if you have your lip pressed up against the front of the mic, your voice's energy will make it through the labyrinth of baffles without issue. But every other sound in the stadium will have a much harder time getting through.

These mics may even be vuvuzela-proof.

And even more amazing... this microphone was designed in the 1950s and they have yet to create anything better for incredibly noisy environments.

Isn't that neat?

I think it is neat.

something im noticing is the redditors are just commenting on everything via reblogs with reckless abandon. and its so funny bc thats how youre MEANT to use this fucking website but we've trained ourselves out of it somehow.

I feel like a fucking chimp raised in a lab let out into the wild and just doing shit without understanding wtf is going on because I was raised to click the button to get cookie

I think I already reblogged this but im gonna do it again because this is a good reminder on how toxic gatekeeping it.

I’m reblogging this for the amount of thought that was put into figuring out the necessary configuration for a mertaur wheelchair.

MMMMM, the LAYERS to this.

She’s technically a monster too. She might not look it at first glance and seems mostly human, but it isn’t deniable even despite her looks compared to the other monsters.

But she realizes that she is still not like the rest of the monsters either and may not have entirely the same experiences as them, which is why she feels that she might not belong to or deserve to go to the support group. By sometimes passing as human, she feels she isn’t worthy of the space.

The sad reality though is even though she’s mostly human in appearance, that tail she has undeniably would still cause her some struggle. Humans are still gonna look at that tail and think she’s a freak. There are probably still accommodations she needs because of the tail that she may still struggle to have access to. Even if it is just the tail, that tail is still enough to other her from humans and cause her problems and discrimination.

She should get to belong in that support group even if she gets told she’s not monster “enough”. She still shares some of the same struggles as them that are caused by being a monster, and needs support.

This is an excellent demonstration of the flaws in the concept of passing privilege. Bravo to the artist.

NOW I will reblog this.

A seven-panel comic that was digitally drawn by @/pet_foolery on Instagram.

Panel 1: A werewolf in a light blue shirt and jeans stands with a clipboard in hand, eyes looking off toward the side of the panel. Behind him in the background are three other monsters , a gargoyle, a Bigfoot-esque character, and a green lizard, all on a white background. The werewolf is commenting “Uh… I’m sorry, ma'am, but this is a support group for monsters only.”

Panel 2: The panel zooms back to show only the werewolf and the person he’s talking to, a light-skinned, blond-haired woman with a pink shirt and black pants with a typically “Karen” haircut. She looks like a regular human. The woman replies “Well, actually, I AM a monster.” The werewolf questions, “How?”

Panel 3: The panel has a close up of the woman’s face as she talks, a thought bubble over her head as she explains “Well, you see, my mother was a mermaid, and my father was a minotaur.” In the thought bubble is a mermaid in a tank, holding hands with a minotaur standing beside it as they gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes.

Panel 4: The panel has zoomed back out to show both the woman and the werewolf, the werewolf looking irritated. “Right.” He replies, the “i” stretched out sarcastically. “And let me guess: you got the human half from both of them.” The woman replies, “Exactly.” “Gotcha. Hardy har har.”

Panel 5: The panel zooms into another close up where only top top halves of the woman and werewolf are present, the werewolf leaning in and angrily pointing a finger at the woman. “Ya know, it’s insensitive mockery like this that makes us need these groups in the first place.” The woman looks bewildered at the statement, her hands up almost defensively as she reacts with “Huh?”

Panel 6: The panel draws back out to reveal the two full-bodied again, this time adding a third character standing behind the woman. “Listen, sir. I’m just here to drop off my brother and I’ll be in my way.” She gestures to the person mext to her. He’s a monster like the werewolf, with a mermaid tail and a bull torso/head. He wears a Chicago Bulls jersey with the number 23 on the front, perched on a specially-made wheelchair that helps him move around. He looks annoyed, asking “This guy buggin’ you, sis?” The werewolf is looking at the mino-mermaid in shock, silent.

Panel 7: The woman is walking off the left side of the panel. With her back showing, a bull tail can be visible that wasn’t seen with her front facing out toward the viewer. She glances back at her brother, commenting “I’ll be back to pick you up around seven.” The mino-mermaid glances back at her with a smile, “Sounds good, thanks.” The werewolf is still in his shocked silence, watching her walk off.

isn’t it insane though how schizophrenic people are viewed as violent and dangerous by the majority of society when in reality schizophrenic people are nearly 14 times more likely to be on the receiving end of violence than to be the perpetrators…

schizophrenic person: makes a post trying to raise awareness about the disproportionate abuse and harmful stereotypes schizophrenic people face

yall: “yeah im not gonna reblog this they used the word ins*ne which is so problematic ://”

What the fuck happens that changes these stats to such a massive degree?

1) schizophrenia hardly ever causes people to be violent so schizophrenic people aren’t more likely to be violent than anyone else

2) schizophrenic people’s autonomy is often taken away from them because of their schizophrenia. because the authorities and mental healthcare providers often automatically assume schizophrenic people to be violent, they’re more likely to immediately react to schizophrenic people’s symptoms with violence, without even knowing for sure said schizophrenic person was going to be violent. all of this causes schizophrenic people to be more likely of being victims of violence and abuse. schizophrenic people also have a harder time getting out of abusive households because of the risk of their autonomy being taken away. if a schizophrenic person’s relative or partner is abusive, often the schizophrenic person has no way out of the situation, both because our disconnect from reality can result in us being easier to manipulate, and because the system is built in a way that it takes away our autonomy because of our condition.

also schizophrenic people and psychotic people in general, please do a lot of research before picking a provider for your own sake, and if they try to treat your psychosis in a way that you think is harmful then don’t hesitate to switch providers. your safety and wellbeing should be a priority over everything else.

can y'all please reblog this version instead

reblogging to normalize. because we really should be uplifting sex workers as bread winners. Also because they should be able to show their face in public without fear of repercussions??? (cough cough), like this gentleman.

Honestly its unhinged and hilarious but yet also seriously something I want to see more of

Anyway…👀

Reblog if you’re a cheap whore. Or respect cheap whores. Or have the power to turn young people into cheap whores. (they can never tell which)

support whores both cheap and expensive!

if shes your girl then why have i slowly been replacing her parts until there’s nothing left of her original body? is she then still your girl?

They ship of theseus’d my girl

Can’t have shit in Detroit

this actually perfectly demonstrates the transitive property of memes: you can replace a meme piece by piece until it only structurally resembles the original, and it is, in fact, the same meme.

call that the meme of theseus thesis

tumblrites can have a little intertextuality as a treat

my naym is ship and when i’m broke the broken part from me they toke

replace the part had been the plan but in the morn hand door car man

*me shoving transitive properties into my purse* sorry, I have to go

We owe the reddit refugees an apology for making them see posts like this

absolutely not, they need to be naturalized to the environment quickly

Universal basic income is essential if we want to build a bright future in the age of automation.

Seriously. The 40-hour work week was codified in 1940, before computers did anything. Per-hour productivity has more than quadrupled since then, but we’re working even harder, to live not all that much better. It’s absurd.

No, it’s not absurd, it’s deliberate. The ruling class wants us to work as hard as possible, so they have profits to skim and pile up.

I’ll reblog this every time I see it:  Before the 40 hour work week, we had the 80 hour work week, the 100 hour work week.  What got us 40 hours?  Unions.  Want a work week that reflects productivity levels?  Unions.  Want UBI?  Unions.
