Just Boredom

@alwaysaweirdfanhuman

This blog just has a bunch of random stuff i like.
Percy Jackson. Harry Potter. Shadowhunters. Random Nonsense.

Read Debord.

Vox actually did a pretty nice article about it, and in case you were wondering what charities it is supposed to be benefiting

Ben and Jerry’s isn’t making an empty advertising gesture. They company has supported Bernie Sanders, and made an ice cream flavor to raise awareness of global warming. They run progressive news stories on their websites and social media. They pay their workers a living wage. Even their brownies are sourced from a company that specializes in hiring people out of jail to help them get their lives back on track. They’re open supporters of socialism. I understand the idea of “no ethical consumption” but Ben and Jerry’s isn’t just adopting a political message for nothing.

Blind cynicism will make friends look like enemies.

They are a pretty fresh company in Poland (their ice cream showed up in stores less than two years ago), but they already are very strong financial supporters of our LGBT organizations, especially in Warsaw. They were one of the sponsors of the Warsaw Pride, they also gave 6000 zł (~1600$) to two important LGBT organizations so they could renovate their shared, first real office (the organizations are Miłość nie Wyklucza, who are fighting mainly for marriage equality, and Parada Równości, organizers of Warsaw Pride), and right before the Pride this year they sponsored us a fireproof rainbow in the former spot of an art installation - a rainbow made of flowers - that was burned down seven times. Click for a short english video on the story of this rainbow!

And let me tell you, this is not good PR for them here. It would be better for them and their sales here if they didn’t openly show us any support. Their local fanpage is filled with people raging about their “leftist ideology”. But they still do, which shows they are true to the values they talk about.

Take a look through the comments and you’ll see a lot of things like this, whether it’s refusing to sell two scoops of the same flavor ice cream in Australia until citizens voted in favor of gay marriage, one of the founders showing up personally to a trans rally to hand out ice cream and hugs, or both owners getting arrested at protest rallys.

Then just normal shit like “paying their workers a living wage” and “ethically sourcing ingredients” that seem like should be bare minimums for companies but somehow isn’t.

They’re also just flat out giving money to these charities regardless of sales, the artist is one of the co-founders of CultureStrike & Presente.org (also a queer WOC), and regardless of whether you buy the ice cream the very fact that we’re talking about it and the names of the charities are visible means that the marketing campaign was successful.

I think one of the most interesting comments I’ve seen on this thread was something like: if there truly is no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism then we also have to accept there is no such thing as ethical production. And at that point I think it makes more sense to look at both through a filter of context and intent.

They were big supporters of Amendment 4 here in Florida, the largest expansion of voting rights in the country since the Civil Rights Movement. Florida permanently banned folks with felony convictions from ever voting again, leaving roughly 1 in 10 Floridians over the age of 18 without access to the ballot box. Ben & Jerry’s didn’t just support financially—they led a statewide ice cream truck tour to help get out the vote during the final weeks of the election, educating voters on the impact of Amendment 4 passing and giving out free scoops, swag, and info sheets. Like, even when capitalism is overthrown, there’s still a place for Ben & Jerry’s in the socialist future, I hope.

Blind cynicism will make friends look like enemies.

Not just a slogan of “resist,” but a full-length 4-step demand plan for tackling American white supremacy.

There are full-ass politicians with less political identity than Ben & Jerry’s.

Indigenous people in Attawapiskat cannot drink their water or bathe themselves, and haven’t been able to for weeks. They called a state of emergency.

What is Justin Trudeau’s response?

1 litre per day of water for kids under 2 years old. 1.5 litres per elder. The Tribal council must pay for this water in advance before they can be reimbursed next month.

This is shameful.

Is there anything we tumblr readers can do to help?

1. If you’re not Canadian just sharing this post and following this blog will help.

Also follow these other Canadian Politics blogs and share their posts too:

2. If you are Canadian, there is a Federal Election in October. Vote for NDP. They’re the only party who has given a damn about what is going on in Attawapiskat. As far as I can tell the NDP is the only party to even visit Attawapiskat this month. Volunteer and donate too.

3. If you are Canadian, write to the PM, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and your member of Parliament and demand that they help this community. Find your MP here:

Here’s your regular reminder that just because he produces pseudo feminist sound bites, doesn’t mean our prime minister isn’t a steaming pile of human excrement. Vote NDP.

In case y'all are wondering who is running for Prime Minister in the NDP group, his name is Jagmeet Singh.

He

-supports a progressive tax system

-supports eliminating several tax deductions available to the highest-income earners and redirect the money to low-income seniors, workers and disabled Canadians

-supports a $15/hour minimum wage

-supports a universal pharmacare system (our free healthcare is being challenged right now in ontario under doug ford who wants to create premium healthcare for the rich)

-is a strong advocate for equality amongst poc and lgbt groups

-wants to put a federal ban on carding as it is a systematic form of racism

-wants to ban handguns in individual cities should a crisis occur (yes they are legal here)

-believes the RCMP should complete LGBTQI2S+ competency training" to ensure interactions with law enforcement are not stigmatizing or traumatizing.

-supports more inclusive shelter and transitional housing spaces for lgbt kids

-advocates for Health Canada conducting research on the health care needs and experiences of LGBTQ patients and advocates for policy changes allowing people to self-declare their gender.

-supports immediately repealing the de facto BAN ON BLOOD, TISSUE AND ORGAN DONATION by men who have sex with men and trans women who have sex with men.

-wants to reduce the carbon emissions levels of Canada to 30% of 2005 levels by 2025

-supports creating more accountability in climate change policy by creating an independent officer of parliament mandated to report on interim progress on emission reductions

-supports decriminalizing possession of all drugs and treating drug use as a medical issue rather than a criminal issue

-advocates for free contraceptives for women

-FIRED a man in his party who was charged with sexual assault allegations after he would not complete a rehabilitation program in sensitivity training

And there is SO MUCH MORE

Listen y'all I don’t love getting political on here but honest to god vote in your riding for your NDP candidate. People are scared to vote for them because of the cuts in work hours they instituted last time they were in office but that was FIFTEEN years ago under a different leader.

If a conservative leader is voted in that gives so much power to federal leaders like premier doug ford who mind you

-cut funds to OSAP a grant and loan system based in ontario to help university students of low income families pay for their education (last year I received enough money to almost pay my full tuition, this year I am receiving loans that dont even cover half of my school year. He has also erased the 6 month grace period to pay them back

-He has allowed graphic anti abortion billboards to be posted in Toronto (I will not be posting a picture but if you are curious there are pictures circulating. It has severely affected many women particularly those who have suffered from miscarrages)

-he has eliminated an ontario arts council which was established under the Indigenous Culture fund

-proposed ending the transition child benefit which helps low income families on welfare feed and clothe their kids

-CUT 70% OF PROVINCIAL FUNDING TO THE ANISHINABEK FISHERIES RESOURCE CENTER

-cut annual funding on stem cell research

-Cut: An unclear amount of funding from violence against women shelter services

-increased class sizes of elementary, middle and high schools (up to 40 kids I believe) and is making high school kids retain ONLINE credits OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS ON TOP OF HOMEWORK AND BANNING ELECTRONICS IN SCHOOLS

and that’s just the tip of the iceberg I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of information

To find out who the NDP candidate is in your riding (because yes if you’re not Canadian or have not voted before Canadian’s vote for the MP candidate in their area not for the Prime Minister themselves and whichever group has the most people voted in from a.certain group dictates who the Prime Minster will be) you can go to this website

and learn more about the MP in your area.

Please my fellow Canadians our election is held this year on OCTOBER 21ST YET NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. Not voting will not solve our problems. VOTE and please consider voting for you NDP candidate.

I never thought we would turn into the states

Then you haven’t been paying attention at all to Indigenous people.

How is this NOT harassment? I have no words..

Something I remember from my Criminal Law classes is that, quite genuinely, looking at someone (occasionally even pointedly not doing so) can constitute assault.

It seems absurd, looking at someone? Where’s the harm, right?

Well, it turns out it’s so that the law has recourse against people who just stand in a public space and start through someone’s living room window. For weeks.

Just randomly chasing somebody, even without intent to actually harm, is legally assault. It’s not harmless, it’s months or even years of therapy and paranoia against ever going outside your home, if you even think your home is still safe.

TLDR: Yes the law has already seen you play “I’m not touching you” and it is already fed up with your BS.

everyone talks about “did you put your name in the goblet of fire” being the worst book to movie dialogue fail but lets be real the worst is where hermione answers a question in class and snape calls her an “insufferable know-it-all” and in the book ron is furious and he goes OFF and says “you asked a question and she knows the answer! why ask if you don’t want to be told?” but in the movies they just make him say “he’s got a point, you know” and i’m still mad about it

When you just can’t love yourself, just work on giving yourself basic respect.

When you just can’t practice self care, aim for basic hygiene and keeping yourself alive.

When you just can’t have positive thoughts, focus on ignoring the negative ones.

When you just can’t quit those bad habits and unhealthy coping mechanisms, be sure to take care of yourself afterwards.

When you just can’t make yourself eat enough, aim for something three times a day, even if it’s something small.

When you just can’t stop binge eating, just do your best to forgive yourself and focus on something else instead of dwelling on it for any longer.

Not everyone is at a point where they can recover, and so thinking about recovery can be intimidating and make them shut down, because they just feel like they’re nowhere close to getting better so they might as well not bother. There needs to be more advice on dragging yourself through the days. Self care to the bare minimum. Aiming for “feeling okay with yourself” or “feeling less awful about yourself” rather than loving yourself. Baby steps.

The SINGLE most valuable thing I acquired from my undergrad degree was internalising this: something is better than nothing.

‘Perfect’ is the enemy of ‘good’. ‘Good ‘is often the enemy of ‘done’. Best practices are almost always the enemy of better practices.

I have spent a lot of time in my professional life – in several different fields, actually – trying to convince people to do something. Because something is always better than nothing. Even if it’s a very, very small something. It’s still better.

Also, self-improvement is work, and like any other form of work, you can take on too much and burn out. Don’t burn yourself out. At least do something, and self-improve at your own pace. Don’t rush it.

An Endgame Analysis

Spoilers below, obviously.

This is about Natasha’s death.

  • Look, I admit that this made sense for Natasha’s redemptive arc that has been building since Avengers. HOWEVER. However. She did not need to die. There were other endings. There were other fitting ways to conclude her arc.
  • Tony had 3 full movies, plus Civil War, before he died. Natasha had none.
  • Narrative decisions don’t exist in a vacuum
  • As a male writer, you look at the one character who has had little to no development, and of all the possible endings, you think ‘Oh, a death could be a narratively appropriate way to end her arc so let’s do it’??

But fine. Alright. Let’s say you, a writer, in all your infinite wisdom, decide that this is a good move. All is not lost! You can still pull this off well! After all, it is an effective conclusion to her arc- or it could be, if you play your cards right.

Oh, wait.

A brief comparison of the deaths of Tony Stark, founding member of the Avengers, and Natasha Romanoff, also a founding member of the Avengers.

  • Pre-death: Tony got to see his dad. Tony got to tell his father he loved him, that he did well. In fact every single character except Natasha got an emotionally-satisfying reunion or payoff. Natasha never got anything equivalent.
  • Circumstances of death: Hey you know what’s fun? When the only member of the original Avengers who doesn’t battle Thanos is Natasha. When the only original Avenger not present to hear ‘Avengers Assemble’ is Natasha.
  • When the only Avenger, original or not, who does not fight a single villain in any scene, is Natasha
  • Moment of death: Natasha gets a few seconds of her body lying on the ground, while Tony gets to say goodbye to Peter and Pepper. Natasha dies without saying goodbye to anyone. She doesn’t say goodbye to Steve. Rhodey. Tony. Thor. Bruce. She died without ever seeing Wanda again, without ever seeing Sam. She died without seeing Laura, Lila or Cooper.
  • Natasha had found her family, and so did Tony. Except Tony died with his family, and Natasha died without ever knowing that hers would be saved at all.
  • Send-off: Everyone mourns Tony. Everyone. Natasha’s death was a footnote just like Vision’s- in fact made explicitly equivalent to Vision’s with the conversation between Wanda and Clint. Vision only existed for three years. Clint knew Natasha for years longer than the others knew her, yes. But he was far from the only relationship she had.
  • Tony knew her for thirteen years.
  • Steve knew her, and worked side-by-side with her constantly without a single break, for eleven goddamn years.
  • By comparison, Steve worked side-by-side with Tony for 3 years.
  • Bruce and Thor knew her for eleven years and worked with her for three years.
  • By comparison, Bruce and Thor knew and worked with Tony for the exact same amount of time.
  • Rhodey worked with her constantly. Without a break. For 8 years.
  • Rocket and Nebula worked with Natasha for five years, longer than they worked with the Guardians.
  • By comparison, Nebula worked with Tony for 21 days.
  • Sam worked with Natasha for 4 years straight. Wanda worked with her for 3 years.
  • By comparison, Sam and Wanda worked with Tony for zero years.
  • I am not complaining about Tony’s send-off. I love Tony too. I am rightfully furious that the writers and directors chose to ignore Natasha’s past with all these people. Why do Natasha’s friends, Natasha’s only family, grieve only for Tony?
  • Post-death: Tony’s voice echoes across the screen. He appears, after his heroic death, in physical form in a message to his loved ones, and to the audience. We get a moment of silence to mourn him, to catch our breath alongside the characters on screen who will miss him as much as we will. But Natasha had loved ones too. We don’t get to mourn Natasha.
  • Tony’s legacy will be carried on by Morgan.
  • Nobody remembers Natasha but Clint.
  • They are both!! Founding!! Avengers!! Members!!

Natasha’s story is a redemption on a micro level, but pull it back just a bit and it’s a deep tragedy. She does not get her big hero acknowledgement. She’s forgotten, the world moves on, she leaves no legacy. And that is the fault of the creators, not the character.

PS: rolling my eyes at them trying to ignore these very real flaws and brush them under a rug with that patronizing all-female battle scene, are you for real.
