Miranda. She/her. 20s. Filipino and broadly European. This blog is a clusterbomb of things I like and things I think are important. I'm happy to tag anything that you're hoping to block. (Standard warning: [thing] tw)

Reason I am glad there's no sign of a Jewish knight in Arthurian legend: All of the antisemitism that the source material and adaptations would probably have heaped on such a character.

Reason I am sad there's no sign of a Jewish knight in Arthurian legend: Missed opportunity for someone with hidden ill-intentions to manipulate hospitality at Camelot to gain a promise that "No good Christian knight" may stand against them, whereupon they wreak havoc until our boy gets to pull a religious version of the Éowyn Reveal.

So, y’all. Some of you may remember a webcomic called NIMONA. It actually started on tumblr! Then it became a full webcomic. And then it got published as a graphic novel.

It’s done by ND Stevenson, who was behind tumblr-favorite She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Also notable for the lady lumberjack story, Lumberjanes.

NIMONA was the first big one. Delightfully queer and vitally anti authoritarian and very tumblr through and through. (There is a character literally named Ambrosious Goldenloin, pictured on the left there.)

Many years ago Netflix announced that it would be making a NIMONA film. Then it went silent. Then the mass cancellations happened.

Then, today, they announced the film is coming out on June 30th.

Will it be a retelling if the original? Will it be a prequel? A new derivative story? No idea. But it’s important to me. And it’s made by queerfolk, openly, aggressively queerfolk, who have never hesitated to tell queer stories.

So I wanted to get info out on this. Get people hyped. Because marketing engines certainly won’t. We need to remind corporations that we are a statistically significant “consumer demographic” and that queer stories can and do sell, and shouldn’t be shuttered away.

So. Yeah. Consider buying and reading the original, consider watching the film.

The comic is relatively short, so jumping right in and giving it a shot is your best bet. But the tldr is, a an extremely tighly-moraled, long-code-of-honor Supervillain and a chaotic, not so honorable shapeshifter end up teaming up up to fight against the “good guys.”

Y’all on tumblr love the short stories on the writing prompts about “what happens when the supervillain realizes [thing is bad?] and ends up being a dad figure who might be willing the burn the world down a bit? The NIMONA comic is very much that.

No idea what the film will be like, but hey!

The actual production of this film is way more complicated than “Netflix made it”!

Nimona was a Blue Sky film directed by Patrick Osborne (directed the Disney animated 2D inspired CG short about the dog, Feast). It had a troubled production, mostly due to its 2D inspired animation. Osborne left the film, and as Disney began talks to buy Blue Sky, many members of the crew began to worry about its fate.

The film met its unfortunate end in 2021 when Disney bought blue sky and stated it had no intention to finish the film. Off the record some extremely brave anonymous former Blue Sky employees said the film had a same sex kiss and it was why Disney chose to bury the film. (Disney denied this and said it was not far enough along to justify the cost of finishing it, which the BS employees countered, saying it was around 70% finished.)

it was assumed the film would be buried forever as lost media.

In 2022, it was announced Anapurna (a primarily video game production studio) had bought the rights from Disney and would release it through Netflix. They also hired back some (but not all) of the blue sky employees. This was completely unprecedented. Never has a film being willingly given up by Disney to hand to a competitor - I do think the pressure of the anti gay statements were a huge factor.

I’ve seen rumors the film started over from scratch, but the cg models match leaked footage at the very least. Still it is currently unknown what percentage of the film was salvaged from its original form.

Genuinely, one of the most recent important films in animation history!!

Every time I see some gamerbro edit of a female video game character to make her 'prettier', I always see something I have mentally dubbed Cockroach Wife Syndrome (in honor of the guy who accidentally conditioned himself to only be aroused by a fantasy of his cockroach wife Ogtha).

That is to say, there is a certain subset of gamerbro who interacts so rarely with real women, that his primary touchstone for how women look is fiction: often video games and anime. So when a video game woman looks too realistic--too close to having traits that one might find in real flesh and blood women--this is foreign to them. This is unattractive. They have been jacking it to hentai and blender animation porn for too many years, and have inadvertently conditioned themselves to only be sexually aroused by the exaggerated cartoonish traits of animated women.

So now every time I see one such edit, I can't help but think. My. What a coincidence you've made her look more like an anime waifu. Truly dedicated to your cockroach wife.

You can’t just breeze over something like “the guy who accidentally conditioned himself to only be aroused by a fantasy of his cockroach wife Ogtha” without at least linking a 20 minute video breakdown of this man’s descent into madness.

Oh is Ogtha not common knowledge? Eight years ago this was posted on reddit:

Two years ago, we got this update on the life of this roachfucker:

TLDR it's a guy who became obsessed with human-sized roaches with human intelligence after reading Kafka in high school, an obsession which eventually came to monopolize his romantic interests (and has sporadically had catastrophic impacts on his life ever since).

what the fuck happened to my post

If Gotham is Baltimore and therefor in Maryland, then all the villains should be fighting over whether they're in the south or not.

In the "Yes" Camp

  • Killer Croc: He considers Maryland the "Fringe South" before you hit the North, just as Louisiana is Fringe South before you hit the Desert. The poetry of having moved from one to the other pleases him. (Alternatively, as above, but he's from Florida, which is the Fringe South before you hit...the southern part of Florida.)
  • Harley: As an expat from the Greater New York Area, the cultural differences are just too stark for her to ignore.
  • Poison Ivy: The fact is, this area is ecologically closer to what people think of as "The South" than what they think of as "The North".

In the "No" Camp

  • The Riddler: Has uncritically absorbed a lot of stereotypes and cultural messaging about "ignorant uncultured hicks". Thus, his intellectually-focused fragile ego cannot bear to let him think of himself as "A Southerner".
  • The Penguin: Similar to the Riddler, except his threatened self-concept is more to do with his old-money American Aristocrat image (He probably wishes I had put Boston as an option on the poll).
  • Scarecrow: The reverse of Harley. Excuse you, he knows the South. He was raised in the South. The memory of the South clings to him like an old baby blanket made of kudzu. And Crab Cake Central up here ain't the fuckin' South.

I voted for Gotham as New York, but now I want it to be in Maryland just to see the Riddler and Poison Ivy attempting to have this as a rational debate and failing.

My word spreads.

so i've tried to post info about scammers targeting swifties (not just regarding tickets) People broadcasting that they are desperate are going to be targeted -i don't know how to raise awareness of this issue-if any of my mutuals get this can we please brainstorm how to keep the community safe and make sure people know they're being targeted.

bitches be sucking farts there

there’s sixteen Colorado counties that their most searched was “wolf furry”, plus thirty-odd counties (not counting either Arapahoe or any of the ones marked here as “Insufficient Data”) which may well have had plenty of searches for “wolf furry”, just fewer than for whatever they’re labeled here

and “skunk furry” searches in Arapahoe County outnumbered “wolf furry” searches in the entire state of Colorado

something tells me Skunks Georg

Round 3 (Match 28)

Who is the blue character of all time?

Blue (and the OSP channel) is an amazing resource for students and anyone who's interested in literature, mythology, history, insightful funny commentary, and a really great community of people! He makes videos primarily on history - with his favorite topics being Ancient Greece, Venice, and architecture - but all of his work is really well researched, succinctly put together and great for studying for exams, or just to learn something new! His videos are always very insightful and entertaining and he's able to discern when his old work went wrong and add it to a "bad history playlist" so people can learn from his mistakes. And he's literally named Blue!!!

Hold tight yall, I'm about to do something really funny

did someone order the selection bias
