SHS au masterpost

aka 'shiva halfsibs au' aka "hey, wouldn't it be funny if-"

the inciting idea was "If Lady Shiva was Tim's biological mother, who would be the funniest dad option? Well what about Richard Dragon, fellow martial artist (with an oddly fitting surname for this idea), but Tim just… didn't inherit any martial arts skills from either parent."

and then I kept getting ideas.

I think my favorite thing in Marie Kondo's work is the section in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up where she talks about branding and labels contributing to visual clutter.

She explains that if you go through the whole tidying process and still feel cluttered and anxious in your own home, one thing that might help is looking around to see how much visible text and logos there are in your home. It can make you feel like you're constantly being advertised to, which makes you less comfortable in your living space, because you're basically in a showroom.

She suggests taking labels off of packages, storing items in different containers if you can, and making sure you take every purchase out of its packaging when you bring it home.

I think about that advice a lot when capitalism starts to get to me and I feel like I'm never gonna escape. Taking all the branding and advertising off of things has genuinely helped make my home feel more like my home. Peeling labels off candles, storing envelopes neatly on a shelf in a plain box, putting flour and sugar in canisters instead of leaving them in the bags, creatively covering logos on my tech...it all helps so much. Like, goddamn, it really made me realize just how much we are constantly being advertised to even when we think we're not.

I hate to be that guy, but I don't love the idea of buying more stuff to put your stuff in from a sustainability standpoint. Sure it looks nice, but it's just more plastic shit in your house. I think just taking the labels off will be enough in most cases

Well, if you read Marie Kondo's work, she heavily advocates for NOT buying storage gadgets, and instead gives tips for what kinds of things can be recycled into storage. She frequently recommends shipping boxes or shoeboxes, which can be easily painted or papered over to get rid of brand labels.

I also already gave a couple examples that don't even require you to find new storage. Even if you don't have alternate storage options for things like flour and spices, you can still peel off unnecessary labels and cover logos.

At no point did this post say to run out and buy brand new storage containers. You came up with that idea yourself.

i like the suggestion to remove visual clutter, however as a safety note:

one thing you absolutely should not remove or separate from its original packaging is cleaning chemicals (or other toxic substances).

if something is accidentally ingested (or splashes in your eye, or on your skin, or up your nose etc) it is vital you have the original packaging and labels so you can, if needed, be treated effectively.

medical professionals need to know exactly what you got in or on you, and in an emergency you cannot guarantee that you will remember what brand or product you were storing in the jar hand-labelled 'laundry sauce'

it's also important to keep the original packaging for food, in case of product recalls. you don't want to find out the flour brand you normally buy from has metal shavings contaminating it, and not know if your batch is one of the ones affected

This pizza was made over here in Brazil and I’m happy to inform everyone that the method they used to get the toppings over the whole dough evenly is just slightly less funny than what the last poster in the thread suggested:

They hovered a guy over it using a crane and maneuvered him around by pushing him with a pole.

brazilian pizza keeps winning

Ok I've been begging for the prev tags that are relevent to your preving to be copied bare minimum ever since the tiktok girlies decided tumblr was retro and came in here and started that trend, but now that tumblr has murdered it's interface to the point where we can't click to see the prev tags even if we're not blocked can we please fucking start copying tags, holy fucking shit

you can:

a) Steal the prev tags (=copy them into yours)

b) take a screenshot and post it in your reblog

c) Copy the tags and post them as text in your reblog (best imo, for accessibility, ease of reading, and really long tag essays). This doesn't work in the app, but if you're a mobile user, it can still be done, you'll need to copy the link to the post and open it in your browser app.

generally it's polite to @ the person who's tags it is

A very, very gentle reminder that "prev tags" is now completely useless, bc you can no longer click back thru the reblog chain and see the prev tags. You can see the reblog in front of you, and you can find the original post - by itself, completely devoid of context - but you can't click thru to the previous reblog. This is apparently intentional, since I literally emailed support about it - being able to click back thru the reblog chain and being able to see the source post in context on op's blog are fundamental parts of the user experience imo and I am pissed - and their response was basically like yeah we meant to do that but if you want to talk about it you can go to our WIP blog, where the ask is literally only open one day a week and we will completely ignore you.

One under-appreciated breed of fic writer are the ones who hyperfocus on logistics to the exclusion of all canon shortcuts, and thus usually strike upon an awesome way to flesh out the worldbuilding or characters.

Like, I’m not necessarily talking realism here since often it’s still pretty far from realistic, but more like, “someone has to be running spies in this fantasy kingdom, and we’ve seen the whole royal court, so which background character is it? How does that change these three major interactions?” Or “real life historical nobility did in fact have some things to do that were like jobs, how does this human disaster cope with running an estate?” Or “there’s no reason for a sci-fi robot detective to know how to whitewater kayak, where’d she learn?” Or “if this guy is serving the emperor directly he has to be way high up in the space empire servant hierarchy, why is he doing this menial task for someone else? What’s his motive? Does he perhaps have the secret space telepathy?”

Anyway I’m always DELIGHTED to find a fic or writer who asks these questions because the fics themselves are universally bangers.

person who knows how logistical things works has picked up the cannon, hefted it thoughtfully, and put a single chalk mark precisely on the problem.

Questions I ask of any setting:

  • Where does the food come from?
  • where does the waste go?
  • Where do the people who make the food and deal with the waste come from?
  • how do they get the stuff they need to do those things?
  • how do they sort out conflicts when both sides are sure they’re in the right?

then I just keep asking where/how/why for every new level of answer until the world is full of detail!

reddit migrants y’all are adorable, it has been a pleasure watching you learn to tumblr like tadpoles coming up on land after growing legs. I am examining your terrarium with great interest

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said Thursday that he wants to bring an end to a user-led protest that has made large parts of the influential website inaccessible this week. Huffman said in an interview that he plans to institute rules changes that would allow Reddit users to vote out moderators who have overseen the protest, comparing them to a “landed gentry.”

Deep in the article, there’s this nugget:

“I would like subreddits to be able to be businesses if they choose,” he said, adding that’s “another conversation, but I think that’s the next frontier of Reddit.”

When people say “fuck u/spez,” this is Spez. I do not have the sort of imagination that can readily convert the way Reddit communities currently work to “businesses.”

If I may offer an absolutely hideous read of that:

"This subreddit requires a subscription to view."

Rent-seeking behavior, pure and naked.

…I really don’t have the imagination for this, do I.

I didn’t quote the sentence just before that about “revenue-sharing,” by the way, so Huffman is absolutely talking about Reddit itself making money off that.

ETA: Oh! Here’s the r/news discussion of this article.
