amateurism is method, but also about time. when people say it is ‘amateur hour’, it is more than bad stand-up comedy or something. the subject of labor is always time. enjoying activities with no monetary benefit reorganizes relationships between the individual, time, and labor, the individual’s time and labor. looking at a job posting, my first inclination is to calculate how much money i make in a given day, from there figure out how much i make an hour. amateur hour is different; time doesn’t mean money time means love. the performance is different in amateur hour because it is fruitless. it is kind of like talking to stuffed animals. “actionless action.” to do something for no reward is fundamentally anachronistic. amateurism is not opposed to practice or sustained meditation or skill. its more like an orientation. did you ever wish you could un-know something? amateurism is never remembering anyone’s names, just their faces. it is a different disposition to information, approaching Wikipedia articles with meekness. if amateurism is love (it is), then skill is detachment.
