Aspire to become a Vet

@allthingsveterinary

Life has been shitty the past 5 years. Getting my life back in order 🫠

CW: animal death, rabies

A horse just passed from aggressive rabies in Thatcher, AZ, and they couldn't euth it because it tried to attack anyone who came near, so it died in agony - they also couldn't shoot it to put it out of its misery because brain tissue has to be preserved for analysis by the state, and potential blood/brain matter spray from that method of death creates a rabies vector biohazard that can infect anyone or anything it comes in contact with. PLEASE make sure any animals you have that can have a rabies vaccine get it. It's a fairly inexpensive vaccine, and the peace of mind and protection it provides is worth it. Putting more description and the video of the horse under a readmore, all the content warnings, this video is truly horrifying, but I feel it is important for media evidence of what rabies can do to be out there for better information.

Heed the video warning but yes absolutely this is why I freak out every time someone downplays the danger of rabies. Rabies is INCURABLE and only one single proven person has ever truly survived rabies, with the vast majority of the others (except a claim one guy did as well but all articles are Spanish language only and he is not even acknowledged by worldwide rabies studies) are in permanent comas but not technically braindead.

You can PREVENT RABIES with a vaccine or if you have recent rabies exposure you can get prophylaxis injections to stop the virus from progressing. The latter is NOT available for nonhuman animals- vaccination is the ONLY way to prevent rabies in your pets and livestock.

Rabies is DEADLY and WILL KILL any animal who progresses to the symptomatic stage. Please vaccinate your animals- it's not expensive and is the only thing preventing them from dying an agonizing and painful death as the virus takes control of their brain.

I had the misfortune of coming across a video of this horse earlier this morning and it straight up disturbed me. That poor animal legitimately looked like a creature out of a horror movie. Cujo paled in comparison.

Even if you never give your animal any other vaccine please at LEAST give it that one. The results are hideous and sad and so so easy to prevent.

I had one guy tell me not to get a rabies vaccine for my dog because it's not an American pet problem.

Yeah bro, that's because of VACCINES. rabies still exists in wild populations. In fact the first ever human survival case can from my town in fond du lack Wisconsin. A girl was infected by bats while cleaning her church's attic. She started showing symptoms and was placed in a coma. She did come out alive, but to my knowledge suffers MAJOR neurological issues now.

Get those vaccines done. They save lives.

I got a robot vacuum on boxing day deals and Rory is following it around supervising and honestly I think this is the best enrichment I've ever bought her.

Mine has teeth marks from my malinois herding it 🫠

Whoo wants a life update?... No one? Too bad. You're getting one.

In the last 5 years I have

1.) suffered from some very bad medical issues and ended up dropping out of college

2.) lost 2 grandparents... In one month I had lost my second grandparent, my job (which was caring for them), my parents moved to FL so I lost my home and support system too.

3.) got into a bad relationship

4.) got out of a bad relationship

5.) figured out my health problems

6.) moved back in with my parents again

7.) started a decent enough paying job with minimal stress

8.) started back in college and currently have all A's.

I will probably never be a veterinarian. But that's okay. I'm alive and my life is on the up and up and I think I'm in the best place I've been since I was a child🙂. I'll still probably post vet stuff as I do still find it interesting.

Hope everyone else is doing well too ❤️

Here's some cute pics for yall

I recently moved to Florida and now have a cat proof yard. Trixi has recently decided that she will now be reverse pest control. She catches lizards outside and releases them alive indoors. This is a new behavior she had recently learned from her mother

This particular lizard was lizard number 2 of the day and was released safely back outside with the other.

My cat does this at the vet, but I think it's a stress response and not an "unbothered queen" response because in reality she's an anxiety ridden ball of fury to anyone who's not me or her dog.

others: “so, how ~southern~ are you?”

me: “The entrance of my hometown has a shrimp boat sitting in the main street. At Christmas theres a shrimper Santa and alligators pulling him instead of reindeer.”

others: “what?!”

me:

this is  the only xmas content i want to see, fuck everything else. Shrimper Santa and his flying albino alligators

i sincerely believe that anyone who says "oh you can't cook with a microwave, you should only be cooking with the stove / toaster oven, everything you make in a microwave is gross" has never bothered to actually learn how to use the microwave for cooking.

the trick of a microwave is that if you're using the basic settings (like i do), it has all of one cooking temperature. there's no "hotter" or "colder", it's purely time. you put it in, you cook it for a time, and then you move on.

cooking with a microwave can be just as hands on as cooking with a stove, if not more so, but for my comfort levels it's worth it.

cook eggs in 10-20 second bursts and you can make a mean scrambled eggs in a cup. you can boil pasta in a bowl if you get the water ratios right and watch the microwave - if you're willing to risk the mess, set some paper towels down and you can afford a little carelessness. instant mashed potatoes? burst fire it. mixed fried foods? mess with the timings a little and you can cook them all properly. ramen with the eggs and spices? adding stuff in preset timings is built in to the box! there's no question about juggling, i can't forget if i'm adding ingredients now or later, i just do it at THIS burst and keep going!

"but you should just make it on the stove at that point-" no. i have no confidence and don't wanna do extra dishes. i know how to use a microwave. i have confidence in using a microwave. i can manage cleaning up and using a microwave. i don't care about cooking better food, i just want food. that's the point of cooking with the microwave.

you can cook with a microwave is my point. anyone can cook with a microwave is my point. a microwave is a cheaper method, sure.

you can cook with it though.

old fashioned oatmeal in the microwave takes anywhere from 2 to 3 minutes.

Pour 1/2 to 1 cup oats in bowls. Add some dried fruit if you have it and want it. Add some cinnamon if you have it and want it. Add water until it just covers the oats. Put in microwave for 2 minutes to start. Add salt to taste. Add milk if you have it and want it.

Super fast hot meal for when you are very tired but still want something filling.

You can cut a potato into 1/2 inch thick medallions and put them flat on a plate and add salt and/or pepper and/or garlic powder, etc, then microwave for 6 minutes. If you want cheese, add the cheese after the first 6 minutes and add another 1 to 2 minutes. Fast and delicious and still takes very little effort.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I will never again be around someone who cooks eggs in the microwave. Sure you can do it, but for some reason the smell is horrific and the eggs do not want to come off of the bowl when you clean it.

Sincerely, my ex used to do that to me and it nearly broke me

So just to be clear, and in case anyone truly did not know, anything that's labeled as "homeopathic" is a placebo. It's either water or sugar pills. This is not an exaggeration, that is literally what homeopathy is. It's not a natural remedy, it's not a form of traditional medicine, it's not something your ancestors practiced, it is a placebo.

To be clear, that doesn't mean it can't be helpful. The placebo effect is an extremely interesting phenomenon. I take a pain pull and I start feeling less pain in 5 minutes, not the 30 it should take. And I'm extremely thankful for that. It's caused by the placebo effect.

There's a reason drugs are compared to a placebo pill too. Because it does have an effect. The key is to determine if the drug is more effective than a placebo.

Sometimes that's all someone needs. And sometimes that has less side effects as well than the actual treatment. The question becomes when is a placebo good enough and when is it time for actual medical intervention.

Holy Cow I just read a veterinary article, generated by a content company that sells blog posts, that recommended dental care not just for dogs and cats, but also for smaller animals ‘like birds’.

Birds.

Of course. Birds have tons of teeth.

Humble addition: pink grasshopper

It’s their shiny versions.

Silver phase red fox

Every woman in every Disney/Pixar movie in the past decade has the exact same face

So when I saw this picture for the new Pixar movie Inside Out,

at first I thought the characters were three women and two aliens, but after seeing the trailer I realized the purple and red things were supposed to be dudes. After tracing their faces, I figured out why I was so weirded out:

The two male characters have extremely distinctive face shapes, while the three female characters basically have the exact same shape; round with a small nose.

Now everyone has read about the Elsa/Anna/Rapunzel face debate, but I wanted to see just how far this face thing went. And boy does it go far.

I took pictures of both male and female characters from recent Disney/Pixar movies:

And then traced both of them. Look at the diversity of male face shapes:

AND THE ABSOLUTE FUCKING RIDICULOUSNESS THAT IS SHOWN HERE:

WHAT

THE

FUCK

Just take a second to scroll up and look back at the original pictures in case you think I’m joking.

Apparently every Disney woman is a clone/direct descendant of some primordial creature with huge round cheeks and a disturbingly small nose, because there is no other explanation (yes there is(it’s lazy sexism)) for the incredible lack of diversity among these female faces.

DISNEY.

WHY DOES EVERY WOMAN THAT YOU HAVE CREATED IN THE LAST DECADE HAVE THE EXACT SAME FACE SHAPE? AND DON’T TELL ME IT’S BECAUSE WOMEN ARE HARDER TO ANIMATE. STOP ASSUMING EVERY WOMAN HAS A ROUND BABY FACE AND A SHORT CUTE BABY NOSE. YOU CAN’T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER.

TL;DR: Boys in animated movies have faces that are square, round, skinny, fat, alien-looking, handsome, and ugly. The only face that girls get to have is some round snub-nosed baby face. That’s not right.

I lined up the noses once more to drive home a point.

This is what annoys me most with Disney/Pixar. It reinforces the idea that men can be charismatic in various ways, but women need to conform to one narrow model to be considered beautiful.

dreamworks often has this problem too (look at the women in httyd) which leads me to believe animators genuinely find noses and chins as a concept unattractive. which is just. really weird. we’re headed towards a platonic ideal woman where her face is completely flat

BEHOLD

THE “IDEAL” WOMAN

Have you considered

look i’d have made that reference bc i’ve seen images of that before but like

what even is it

where is this from

M O I S T U R I Z E. M E.

This still has the power to cripple me

On mobile the only thing that loaded was the red drawing of the female faces and I thought it was a bunch of tiddies

Really happy to see this at my local library

OOOOH. *happy YA librarian dance*

I want this in every library, everywhere. After all, some kids won’t even google this stuff because they don’t want parents/siblings checking their browser history.

This is really awesome. And if you’re not familiar with how the Dewey Decimal system works - the numbers subject-based, which means these numbers are applicable in EVERY library. So if you see something you want to research on this list - look for those same numbers in any of your local libraries.
