yelena is aroace, why is it so hard for you to admit it???

I’ve been staying away from this because it feels like such a pointless thing to argue about. Despite me having my own tagging system that keeps me out of the show, character, and ship tags a seemingly endless amount of you have been ceaselessly hounding me for days, trying to police what I say and do on my blog. I've finally reached my breaking point so…here we go I guess.

Let’s start with the basics since it appears that most of you fail to grasp even that. There’s two distinctly different concepts that fandom conflates and/or tries to use interchangeably because evidently only a handful of us took a literature class in school. Time for a lesson.

CANON: Canon are the elements of a fictional story that are officially a part of it. Canon is IRREFUTABLE information provided directly from the media to the audience. In movies and TV this would mean things like action or dialogue that happen ON SCREEN. In a book or comic it would be things EXPLICITLY said or shown on the page. Canon isn’t fan interpretation/speculation, fix-its, headcanons, what-ifs, something an actor said at a con in front of 200 people or that they “thought maybe that’s a thing their character would do” at an interview in a press junket. Canon is what is IN THE TEXT. End of story.

AUTHORIAL INTENT & DEATH OF THE AUTHOR:

-Authorial Intent: An author can have an “intention” with a piece but that ends the moment the story is out of their hands and the reader/viewer takes ownership of it. Why? Because none of us see the world the same way. Literally. The author simply cannot control how an individual will read their work, cannot dictate how we embrace what they supposedly wrote, and cannot force us to throw out our own takeaway of the text. It is entirely possible that my experience with the text or the characters is vastly different than what they “intended” that to be and there is nothing wrong with that. Once art is out in the world it is going to take a life of its own. That is how subjectivity works.

-Death Of The Author: TV Tropes defines Death Of The Author as follows: “It holds that an author's intentions and background (including their politics and religion) should hold no special weight in determining how to interpret their work. This is usually understood to mean that a writer's views about their own work are no more or less valid than the interpretation of the reader.”

Now that we’ve established both those things let’s break down Yelena’s case in particular.

The Log Off Protest is officially OVER!

But we’re not done yet!

Wave 2 of the protest will pick up before the end of the year - this time with mass emails, tweets, and negative reviews of the app/website. There is no defined date yet, so make sure to follow this blog and the Twitter page ( @logoffprotest ) for updates.

Just Wave 1 on its own was a success - dropping Verizon’s stock.

Imaging what Wave 2 would do? Or even Wave 3 - a longer protest?!

Thank you all so much - from the bottom of my heart. Without you guys protesting, this would have not happened. Tumblr wouldn’t have heard our voices and the world wouldn’t know we do not tolerate the targetting of content creators and sex workers.

So thank you. Really.

Let’s continue making this community better - together.

Lyrics in Faroese:

Trøllabundin eri eg eri eg Galdramaður festi meg festi meg Trøllabundin djúpt í míni sál í míni sál Í hjartanum logar brennandi bál brennandi bál

Trøllabundin eri eg eri eg Galdramaður festi meg festi meg Trøllabundin inn í hjartarót í hjartarót Eyga mítt festist har ið galdramaður stóð

English translation:

Spellbound am I, am I The wizard has enchanted me, enchanted me Spellbound deep in my soul, in my soul In my heart burns a smouldering fire, smouldering fire

Spellbound am I, am I The wizard has enchanted me, enchanted me Spellbound in my heart’s root, my heart’s root

Did anyone else just get the shivers? Cuz I’m definitely getting the shivers.

Artifacts Series

In This Together (11k words)

Two years after Yamatai, Lara and Sam are exploring ruins in Central America. They uncover their feelings for each other, and a new mystery to explore, along with assorted dangers.

Lessons (1600 words)

A month after their adventures in Costa Rica, Lara takes Sam on that promised date. Lots of fluff and the miracle of getting Lara into a slinky dress.

Scars (59k)

“Look at her, Shaw. You can see it. You can see Yamatai in her eyes. I told you. You never leave that island. It’s always with you. Always.”
Nothing ever goes according to plan as Lara and Sam get drawn into events that started with Lara’s father and must end with her. The artifact Lara discovered in Costa Rica is only a piece of a larger puzzle. How does it tie into Yamatai and why is Sam so drawn to them?
It started on Yamatai, and continues to haunt Sam and Lara. Himiko stirs inside of Sam and Lara searches for more answers to the questions posed by her growing collection of powerful artifacts. Can she shake the legacy of her father and create her own? And what happens if all that power gets unleashed at once? Conclusion to the story of In This Together and Scars!
Deep in the jungle on the hunt for an artifact, Lara stumbles into the middle of a warzone. Pseudo-sequel to What Binds the Soul and a bridging fic to another story.
Just a collection of short and medium length drabbles about Lara and Sam. Generally all follow the canon set up in In This Together and Scars (unless otherwise mentioned) and I plan to fill in details about their life together.
Also for fluff. So much fluff.

Alternate Encounters

Doom Raider (14.7k)

Mars, 2145. Renowned archaeologist Lara Croft is under contract with the Union Aerospace Corporation to investigate and translate ancient ruins buried beneath the human settlement. She discovers a warning on stone tablets, only the warning comes much too late. The UAC has been experimenting with teleportation and new energy sources for months. and they’ve made a critical error.
All Hell is about to break loose.
The Cordyceps Pandemic has been raging for years. London’s Quarantine Zones are on their last legs and are no longer safe. Lara and Sam are grizzled and hardened by surviving both Yamatai and a post-infection world. When the walls come down it’s time to leave London.
Lara reflects on the years that passed after the end of Leaving London, and finds her way to a new home, and a new role in life.

Ser Croft (14.5k)

Lara Croft, the daughter of the fallen General Croft has been the personal protection for Princess Nishimura since she was old enough to hold a sword. She’s always at her side, no matter how awkward it gets. But war has come to the kingdom, and the gates have fallen. She must protect her charge at all costs.
Only a mortal can kill a god. Four years into her reign as King, Lara must set out on a quest to destroy a Goddess, to protect her kingdom and her family. Her quest will take her across the world and square her off against some of the most powerful beings in the land. Direct sequel to Ser Croft and it’s highly recommended to read that one first.
What if Sam and Lara’s first meeting was after Yamatai when Lara agreed to an interview? Sam is a recovering but lonely alcoholic who’s turned her life around, and Lara wishes she’d never made it off the island. When they meet each other they realize that something has been missing from their lives. Two halves of the same soul.
Many Meetings is a series of short to medium length stories exploring alternate ways that Lara and Sam meet. They range from sad to silly, outlandish to subtle. Most of these will be one-shots, though some realities may end up explored more than once.
Lara Croft and Sam Nishimura are taking a day to relax before embarking on their expedition to find Yamatai, when they run into an old flame of Lara’s.
Lara has been raiding tombs for over half her life, always one step ahead of death. Now, in her late 40s, her life has caught up to her, and Sam has one last message from her.
Higher. Faster. Further. More. It was something that Lara had read once. It was something that she could understand on a subconscious, almost innate level. The desire, the need to push herself to her limit, and beyond. The need to strive to be better than she was. To find answers in a handful of dust.

Breakdown (5.7k)

Inspired by the Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer and this artwork. Lara’s pulling away, and Sam is terrified she’s going to lose her.
In the weeks and months following Yamatai, Lara and Sam begin to self-destruct under the pressure, each in different ways. This eventually pushes their friendship to the breaking point. Standalone from my other fics.
Set during University days, Lara has a massive crush on Sam and Sam knows it. She drags Lara out shopping, and Lara is pretty sure that Sam is trying to kill her.
Five centuries ago a rock the size of a city block impacted North America. The world burned and the skies darkened. But life found a way and humanity was stubborn enough to survive near-extinction. Sam is a chronicler, the story-keeper for her village. Raiders have destroyed everything she knows, but then a mysterious stranger saves her.
