i think that deciding popularity via statistics in fandom specifically is kind of a moot point. i say this mainly because i feel like there's just no way to actually measure the popularity of something if you take into consideration the circles it's being shared in, the platform, and the people likely voting. for youtube, its going to majority be casual or older fans who tend to be more partial to kvtaang and on occasion zutara. on ao3, if you look right now, the most popular ships are zvkka and zutara, but I was talking to my friend who is quite active in the zvkka fandom, and she says a lot of these numbers are reoccurring authors + older fics. as for circles, if someone were to make say a kvtaang vs zutara poll, but shared it and only zutara shippers really saw it, the likelihood is that zutara would win, unless that poll left that circle. popularity in fandom doesn't really mean anything because its kind of hard to measure, and you shouldn't look at the popularity of something to justify your enjoyment of it. ive recently been reading some yue/suki which isn't popular by any means, but it's a very nice ship, and I still enjoy it
i agree with all of this. like you said, there’s neither a genuine metric of measurement nor does a ship need to be popular in order to “justify” shipping it lmao. so long as you’re having fun, who the fuck cares?
besides, popularity is nice and everything but it can also very easily be a flash in the pan. sure, a certain ship may have the most shippers, but do those numbers translate to genuine engagement with fandom, to fic and art and edits and creative involvement? will they stay the same five, ten, fifteen years from now?
because that’s what actually makes or breaks a fandom - not how many people it has, but their level of dedication & commitment when it comes to creating and maintaining a community for the thing they love. that’s what’s truly important.
Honestly, this. The only reason I care at all about Zutara's popularity is because it means I have tons of people to interact with in this side of the fandom. Tons of stories, tons of metas, tons of art, tons of people posting random thoughts that make me go hmm...😊 before I go on with my day.
Especially since polls and things like that can be rigged.

This animatic came to me in a hazy naptime dream a month or so ago, but I finally had time to sit down and finish it recently. I just had a vision of Zuko and Katara in the Southern Water Tribe with Zuko about to head out on a hunting trip with Sokka and Hakoda (a la stories like the-badger-mole’s Traditional Series ), and then Katara sends him off with a giant, warm fur and a goodbye kiss. Ultimately, I wanted an excuse to do some cute domestic SWT Zutara fluff and kissing. God, I want to work on an animated romance show so bad (even though drawing kisses is so flipping hard help). ToT On one hand I wish I had it in me to do more grand animatics, but really, I like making calm fluffy things and I’m alright with that.

Unpopular opinion if Zuko wasn’t attractive Zutara woudlnt be as popular as it is. There I said it. Zuko and Katara would be horrible together, aesthically sure whatever but actually know.
Zuko who is known for his temper and impulsive tendencies with Katara who is just as impulsive and hot headed.
Lol they would crash and burn so fast. Water and fire don’t mix, opposites attract but that’s about it.
They would argue all the time after the honeymoon phase wore off, they both yell and get angry with their partners and wouldn’t stand to be yelled out without yelling back.
Aang and Mai both are for the most part calm when their partners get angry they help calm them down (more so Aang). Help them think rationally etc etc
I said what I said and this is coming from someone who used to love Zutara (still likes it? meh depend on the day)
What a sexist take. And also incorrect. Mai wasn't so much calm as she just didn't care about Zuko's emotional well-being. As for Aang, whenever he can be bothered to even attempt to relate to Katara, the best he can muster is some half-hearted comparison between her mother's murder and him losing Appa for a few days. Katara and Zuko, meanwhile, have arcs so intertwined that you can't separate them and have the same show. They also have a closer, more mutually supportive friendship in the last few episodes than either of them has with their canon love interests in the entire series. Just because YOU were shipping them for shallow reasons doesn't mean that those are the only reasons to ship them. Be so for real🙄

I know it's not a lot, but watch The Southern Raiders, Ember Island Players and Sozin's Comet again. That's how they treat each other. That is their relationship. Even Crossroads of Destiny gave people a taste of what they'd actually be like together. They talk to each other.
60+ episodes and Aang never gave a flying fuck about what happen to Katara's mom. Zuko risked it and went back to the Fire Nation for her. Aang had no say in it. The most Zuko did to "influence" Katara was suggest that it should be a stealth mission. The rest was all Katara.
Mai didn’t care about his emotional well being ok sure. People really wanted an enemies to lovers so bad.
Lmao the whole southern raiders episode was done so Katara could stop being mad at him and forgive him. That was the whole point of it. He literally told Sokka maybe if I help her get closure she’ll stop being mad at me was not from the goodness of his heart.

while half-awake last night my brain just... launched into this weird internal monologue about art and why humans are MADE to create, that we NEED it. all i can remember about the out-of-control thoughts was "humans create art to fill in the gaps between reality and our own limited perceptions of it", and... well, good point, half-awake brain. This barely felt like my own thought but it's true. The universe is huge, beyond any human understanding, and our own perceptions are so limited that our brains NEED ART in order to make sense of it not just to ourselves, but to others. We write poetry about it, we draw, we paint, we make music, all to seek answers the universe cannot give us. You don't make art to get popular, to make money, to make "content"... you create because you're human

That moment of “oh no….OH NO!” When u realize something messed up years after the fact. X wouldn’t allow Lily to wipe her mind because he wouldn’t want to invoke the wrath of her mommas in case something went wrong.

I'm engaging in good faith here: Bumi turned out to be an airbender in the end. As far as I can remember it was explained as that he was some sort of a "latent" airbender (god I hate this plot-twist about random people turning into airbenders so much 🤡🤡🤡) before Korra decided to keep the portal between the worlds open. Doesn't it contradict your argument that Bumi disproves this rule about Air Nomads giving birth to airbenders only. Sorry if you've already answered this question!
No, I don't think it does. He wasn't an airbender. He didn't have that ability. That's like saying because I have tall ancestors, and my family tends to be on the taller side, I'm not really 5'6" like my driver's license says, I'm actually 5'11". I just haven't had my magical growth spurt yet. Bryke shot themselves in the foot by declaring that every Air Nomad is an airbender because spiritual superiority. Anything beyond that is them backtracking, but big shock there. Bryke not standing 10 toes down on their own world building when it makes their pwecious boi look bad??? Perish the thought!
Also, even if that was the explanation, it doesn't erase the fact that Bumi never felt connected to or loved by Aang until his airbending powers got activated. That is incredibly sad, no matter how Bryke tries to explain it all away after the fact.
The fact that the Air Acolytes, a group of people obsessed with Aang, didn't even know that Kya and Bumi even existed says it all.
