The curtains were blue because everything in the room was carefully colour coordinated, reinforcing the character’s stylish and controlled characterisation. The curtains were blue because everything in the room was a different colour, reinforcing the character’s eclectic and globe-trotting personality. The curtains were blue because the character is elsewhere established to hate the colour blue, subtextually implying that their deceased spouse was responsible for that decoration choice.

The curtains were blue because throughout their filmography the director consistently uses cool tones to mark moments of distance between characters. The curtains were blue to tie the events in that room into the broader oceanic motif of this particular novel. The curtains were blue because the assonance evoked a contrast with the following stanza of the poem.

Even the curtains looked expensive: floor to ceiling velvet drapes, in a flawless royal blue. She tucked the saucer up on the windowsill and tied back faded blue curtains with a loop of string. The narrow blinds were the same navy blue as the pinstripe suit of the man who served eviction notice that sent them to this office.

The curtains were blue because the author’s childhood home had blue curtains, which they discussed in their letters related to their feelings of comfort in that place. The curtains were blue because the author’s childhood home had blue curtains, which they discussed in their letters related to their feelings of grief in that place.

The curtains were blue as an allusion to the contemporary joke about literary criticism, an extension of the author’s autocritical approach that will be further discussed in section seven.

The curtains were red, as a pun on;

The curtains were read.

…Do you ever see people critiquing specific word usage in novels and wonder if they know that language can be used in fun and figurative ways? And that this is half the joy of writing?

An example off the top of my head - if I say ‘He gave a whisper of a smile’, it does not mean that the smile is literally whispering; it means that the word ‘whisper’ invokes a sense of smallness, due perhaps to subtlety or shyness, and that is something I want connected to your mental envisioning of this dude’s smile.

Saying ‘But that makes no sense; a smile and a whisper are two different things’ misses the point e n t i r e l y

this resonated, huh

i made a 2-part uquiz called Which Shakespeare character are you? and it has 50 possible results.  The first quiz puts you into one of 5 groups and links you to the group quiz that has 10 different characters each. Tag your results. :)

the funniest part of this is seeing people in the tags who want to get hamlet and get something from a play they’ve never read and they’re like UMM IM EMO??? i HAVE to be HAMLET idk who Edmund even is and I’m like… sweetie…. you’re Edmund….

Group 4: Agents of Chaos - Benedick Yes, I will take that!

Excellent result! You rule with your witty banter and possibly being portrayed by David Tennant

Bad Bitches, Cleopatra, but honestly just getting recognized is enough.

Amazingly, I got Puck.

Agents of Chaos - Rosencrantz and/or Guildenstern

honestly this totally checks out

I’m apparently Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing.

Surprising, but I’ll take it.

Are we really going through all of this again?

1. An archive is not supposed to be marketable or palatable. It’s an archive, not social media.

2. Removing fic based on an ‘objective’ opinion on whether or not it is glorifying abuse is not realistic or possible. It will only lead to the further censoring of n/sfw and queer content. We’ve seen this before

There are many new friends on the archive, and many are young and have only known social media, which is why I wanted to say something!

Ao3 does not have an algorithm! It isn't a social media site, it's an archive.

Posting fics on Tumblr isn't the same as posting fics on Ao3

Ao3 is like a giant virtual bookshelf, and everyone is able to add their own stories to the bookshelf, all stored with different tags and different fandoms. Works are automatically sorted by newest to oldest, but filters, looking at bookmarks, and using the search function can change that.

Certain works are not pushed to the top like social media posts. More kudos and reads don't push a single work to more viewers by some algorithm. Unless otherwise filtered, works will be at the top of the page based on how recent it was posted.

Smaller fandoms get less views, less kudos, less bookmarks, and larger fandoms get more simply because of the number of people inside the fandom.

Ao3 is a giant virtual bookshelf- there is no algorithm, and there is no man behind the shelf pushing certain books forward.

Happy reading, and if you'd like to have more people notice a fic, why not share it with them! Send a dm to a fandom friend and it might turn into one of their favorite fics!

[ID: ao3 notes reading "70k words and less than 1k hits. The ao3 algorithm clearly can't appreciate how much effort goes into every" and at this point it cuts off. /end ID.]

Those who may not be aware, for the OTW election in progress there is one candidate who is practically out to end it all:

Tiffany G.

They are wanting to censor and make AO3 a place of control. They want to take our freedom to write and form it to what they think is the correct guideline to, "Make it more friendly."

AO3 already has a ton of filters and tags in place to aid in helping each person tailor their own AO3 experience. Something triggers them? They can filter that tag out. Wanna read G only? Can filter out the rest. Want to read E only?

Filter out the rest.

What this person is wanting to do, it'll take away the beautiful community we have. It is a platform of freedom, of writing what you desire and posting it to find others just like you. To try and put a semblance of authoritive control.. it's repulsing.

Please, please please for those who can vote, DO NOT VOTE FOR TIFFANY G. IF YOU DO AO3 WILL END AS WE KNOW IT.

Can't vote? Pay 10 dollars a year to become a member so you can vote in the future. I just did and regret not doing so earlier.

If you can't vote like me? SPREAD THE WORD. LET THERE BE AWARENESS. DON'T LET THIS PERSON TAKE AWAY THE AO3 WE LOVE. STAND UP, YELL IT OUT:

DO NOT VOTE FOR TIFFANY G.

ok ive said it before but i really really recommend to every american possible that you try to get on medicaid if youre below the poverty line. i see people on here all the time with donation posts whos lives could absolutely be changed by medicaid.

you might have to jump through a few hoops to make sure you have all the right documents but you can even get it while homeless. pretty much the only requirement is that youre below the poverty line.

you can apply with or without disability plus there’s a good number of medicaid providers out there that will even cover trans expenses.

its absolutely worth applying and if you qualify theres a ton of other benefits you can get on top of that like foodstamps and free cellphone service. just find out where your local assistance office is and ask them what they can do to help you it will change your life

A few of these are probably referring to the date posting bug thing, but AAAAAAAAAAAH!

I beg of all the younger folks on Ao3 to understand two things:

  1. There is no algorithm on that site.
  2. Unlearn the attention-hungry bullshit that social media has taught you.

from someone who’s been on ao3 for 5+ years: don’t do this. don’t repost your fics (youll lose your comments and kudos if you do) and don’t change the posting date (people can tell and it’s tacky). it’s not worth keeping your fics on the front page. if you tag correctly people can and will use the very competent search function to find your work even if it’s YEARS old. if youre writing something ppl want to read they will look through their favourite tags to find it. having high interaction, being posted recently, or posting at “peak” times won’t get you any more hits bc that’s not how anyone uses the site.

IT IS AN ARCHIVE NOT A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE

IF YOU WANT TO PROMOTE IT YOU MAKE A POST ON OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA SITES BY OFFERING A SUMMARY AND A LINK

IT. IS. AN. ARCHIVE

TAG YOUR SHIT PROPERLY AND PEOPLE WILL FIND IT AND READ IT IF INTERESTED

i'd forgotten how hard first drafts are, i'm lookin at this document wondering where my 100k of previous content has gone. bestie we have to write it </3

hey are you a vampire? take this quiz i just spent way too long making and find out the time period in which you were turned

Renaissance

You’re the bitch that just rode by on a unicycle but in a very sexy camp way. As you were brought up during the renaissance, you may have an interest in the arts… Literature, music, Art… Your head exists often in the clouds, making you a more poetic sort of vampire, more of the “stares at the moon” type, but not too much. You’re not afraid to stop staring at the moon in order to engage in some nefarious laughter. Don’t tell the other guys but I think you’re the most fashionable…

OP, i got the shoelaces post and i need you to know some things.

  1. i am 40.
  2. in a meme group i’m in over on fb, someone posted a really gorgeous snail. i, without thinking, responded “effervescent.”
  3. a complete goddamn stranger responded telling me they liked my shoelaces.
  4. EVERY FUCKING BONE IN MY BODY TRIED TO ESCAPE AT ONCE AND I CLOSED FACEBOOK FOR THREE DAYS.

so, not only has the “i like your shoelaces” actually happened to me, but it happened to me recently, at 40 goddamned years old, and it nearly killed me.

I am definitely laughing at you, not with you.

I GOT THE BALLPIT
