Les Mis Bog

@alicedrawslesmis / alicedrawslesmis.tumblr.com

Alice is my name, they/them, I'm a mid-20s latine from São Paulo. Gender? Like that thing from Bring It On? You know that's not real right? This is a sideblog for my les mis stuff! Instagram: @alicet_draws and @yearoflesmis // personal blog: @milfbahorel

ugh fine my personal blog is not cutting so I’ll post here

DO! NOT! DONATE! TO! AMAZON! CONSERVATION! NGOs! DO NOT!

they don’t act on the root of the problem, they don’t mitigate the effects of deforestation, they do have limited action and they don’t help conserve the forest land outside their very small grounds besides doing little to nothing to help the people who actually live in the amazon and conserve it on a daily basis

they are organized, they can keep woodcutting companies away from their land, they are getting murdered for it, they are the only reason there is any forest left at all

THIS is a a fund for indigenous peoples of the Amazon (Brasil only)

THIS is a link to donate from abroad to the indigenous women’s march, it has already happened but you can still donate to support the cause

THIS is a link to support the free land camp, and you can email them at apibbsb@gmail.com if you really want to find ways to support them, donations will go to APIB (Brazilian Articulation of Indigenous Peoples) and you can keep up with their news here

(APIB is coordinated by, among others, Sonia Guajajara! so if you know her you know this means shit will get done)

URGENT UPDATE!!!!

today is the vote in the Congresso Nacional for a new law, the so-called Marco Temporal (PL 490) that will essentially destroy native american's rights to their own land!

PLEASE please PLEASE keep an eye out for news specially if you're in the USA, China, the EU or Egypt. Foreign pressure is not only extremely important, these countries are among the largest buyers of Brazilian cattle in the world. And this is the industry that is tearing the Amazon apart

PLEASE look for petitions, I know both Mark Ruffalo and Leo Dicaprio tweeted about it. If you have a twitter please go right now now this is extremely time sensitive

the reason why I think Napoleon (1927) is les mis adjacent is that it uses SO MUCH visual symbolism

right now they had a scene where Napoleon is facing off his enemy in Corsica (dude who is for an alliance with the english, while Napoleon is for the French convention) and the way they make him win over him and the crowd is the montage switches between Napoleon, that guy, and an Eagle until Napoleon and the eagle are a single image. The crowd watching goes apeshit and switches sides and is then in awe of Napoleon, who didn't even need to say a word. He just stared the other guy down until he freaked out and left cause Napoleon is that awesome

I swear this movie is the best for teaching people about visual metaphors. And also for making napoleon look like noel fielding

Les Mis fans, anyone knows if there’s a good proshot of the musical to show someone who has never seen it (or is only familiar with the 2012 film)? The Spanish revival proshot is the only one I can think of… are these any others?

I know the concert versions are widely available, but I feel they don’t really do justice to the magnitude of the show… anyway

@milfbro maybe your lesmis followers can help?

I think there was one of the new staging?

If anyone knows something please help out!

(and I know op, he probably means a pro-shot of the original london production, but if you somehow have the Dallas one I think that would be pretty cool too)

Another day another comic to talk about!

This is a French Comic illustrated by Houy Raymond and published in 1953 by Vedette, It’s volume 5 of the "FanFan" Collection.

Oh wow The Conventionist! He looks so much younger here.

I think this is the only comic I've seen that has this chapter so far.

Look at my beautiful women, they look sooo well.

I love Javert's expression here but why does he look kinda sad.. since when does this **** have feelings??

The way he doesn't like the whole thing but accepts it at the end and gets his best nap.

Aww this is adorable and I like the colors, they are comfortable.

Yeah give me some Mabeuf moments with Marius!! always happy to see more of him. It's sad when one of the important characters is so forgotten.

THEODULE!!!!

He looks great as always and I love how this comic contains moments of him when his character is not important to the story lol

He has two moments, when he comes to visit his aunt and she asks him to spy on Marius and when she later introduces him to M. Gillenormand and he sits with him to listen to his empty talk.

Seriously just look at his face, I'm sure he regretted sitting with him.

Bless the illustrator for giving Montparnasse these lips and that elegant look.

and of course this moment when Valjean kicks his ass and gives him a fatherly admonition bc it’s ICONIC.

and here are my guys Les Amis who all look like they're wearing a liberty cap.

The way he stands on the table to prove how great Napoleon is ASDJFKASIKDASDF THIS IS SOOOO MARIUS.

I know that Azelma is younger than Cosette and Eponine but she looks like a baby here.

ok why are all the Thenardiers' children blond?? I want an explanation RIGHT NOW.

You don't know how much I love this moment. It's hard to explain. I just love them more than you can imagine.

The audacity he has to ask for water lol.. man ur a spy just shut up and stand there fr.

I can't believe they're still going to kill him after he showed them his chest.. It's Enjolras' chest PEOPLE.

The hilarious thing about this part is that Javert doesn’t seem interested in Valjean’s musty smell and makes him JUST SIT NEXT TO HIM.

and Hugo completes the story as if it’s a very normal thing.

Whatever the ending absolutely breaks my heart, but the way Cosette embraces and cares for her father warms my heart and I know it makes the ending ten times worse but... yeah.

One: so... what the hell is that?

Paris:

ok so, people of tumblr who know any and all chinese history I need help,

is there a book I can read that's accessible about an overview of chinese history? I have bought a couple of books made by westerners that left me dissatisfied to say the least. And most decent books I had available are like, post-cultural revolution history only.

I am looking for a very basic overview but I would accept an in-depth book on a topic that's kinda interesting

I'm just gonna compile recs in this post:

24 Hours in Ancient China, Yijie Zhuang (covers ordinary life during the Han dynasty)

History of China podcast, Chris Stewart (but both recs said 'with a grain of salt')

The Shortest History of China, Linda Jaivin (fast and loose introduction to at least get to know the main players and all the Dinasties etc)

China from Empire to Nation-state, Wang Hui (more academical, follows the period from the Song Dinasty up to the Republic of China)

I am listening rn to the Shortest History of China and already this was a great call, thanks so much for the suggestion
