My personal blog! I am a Birblr and Gamer. // ART BLOG (NSFW sometimes): yoshi-kyubi.tumblr.com //

As an eye doctor, this shouldn't be controversial. It's a problem. 5 years ago, nighttime headlight issues were reserved for people with cataracts or LASIK scars. Today, everyone has problems seeing the road through the oncoming headlights. People are getting anti-glare and blueblocking coatings not bc they are sitting on a computer 8+ hours a day but bc the blue tinted halogens are making them feel unsafe to drive. We are selling insane amounts of yellow tinted nighttime driving glasses even though they're really only for people with cataracts bc ppl are desperate for anything that may help them deal with the headlights. I've had multiple patients tell me they just don't drive at night anymore.

This is an actual safety issue and it needs to be addressed

Nearsighted person here. I got -12 dpt and I got night blindness, which means big difference in brightness is making it extremely difficult for me to see, and I got trouble seeing when it´s dark. “Normal” headlights were already a nightmare for me, but those halogen lights cause me actual pain. That´s why I despise driving as soon as it´s dark and I avoid it whenever I can.

i'm begging you guys to start pirating shit from streaming platforms. there are so many websites where you can stream that shit for free, here's a quick HOW TO:

1) Search for: watch TITLE OF WORK free online

2) Scroll to the bottom of results. Click any of the "Complaint" links

3) You will be taken to a long list of links that were removed for copyright infringement. Use the 'find' function to search for the name of the show/movie you were originally searching for. You will get something like this (specifics removed because if you love an illegal streaming site you don't post its url on social media)

4) each of these links is to a website where you can stream shit for free. go to the individual websites and search for your show/movie. you might have to copy-paste a few before you find exactly what you're looking, but the whole process only takes a minute. the speed/quality is usually the same as on netflix/whatever, and they even have subtitles! (make sure to use an adblocker though, these sites are funded by annoying popups)

In conclusion, if you do this often enough you will start recognizing the most dependable websites, and you can just bookmark those instead. (note: this is completely separate from torrenting, which is also a beautiful thing but requires different software and a vpn)

you can also download the media in question (look for a "download" button built into the video window, or use a browser extension such as Video DownloadHelper.)

The kestrel shuffle! Gotta keep them eggs warm!

(My experience with broody birds is chickens) Why does she do that? Is she having trouble keeping all the eggs under her? Or does she not pluck her breast to expose her skin to the eggs for more warmth?

Yep, birds of prey usually also pluck a brood patch! Shes doing it to rotate and reposition the eggs under her to keep them all warm.

Best quality: her mama wiggles

I am no kind of bird expert, but I think it’s mama AND papa wiggles? At 0:06 and 0:41 that is definitely a different bird.

Yes, the gray headed bird is the male!

weirdos who are harping on about ~covid tyranny~, still, in november 2022, are absolutely on a different planet. look around! you won! no one wears a mask and you dont have to either! you dont have to get vaccinated! no one is even trying to make you anymore! the most vulnerable have been fully forced out of public life so that you can breathe on everyone at cub foods! you got every single thing you want and you’re still crying about “covid nazis” … you are delusional. you are tripping. the dynamic you have created in your mind, in which you are a rebellious scion of individual liberty in a world gone mad with excess caution, does not reflect the conditions of reality. it is embarrassing fantasy. there’s nothing more embarrassing than a jerkoff on the winning team who can’t accept a world where they’re not a righteous underdog. as much as you insist that you don’t want to “live in fear,” it is your own obvious terror of changing your behavior that has defined the trajectory of the past three years. please shut the fuck up forever.

Ugh that post has gotten me thinking about fat acceptance in a way I haven’t in years. I’ve read more studies about weight and health than probably any other topic I’ve ever researched. And every time I see someone wail about health I am just like

Did you know that in post-mortem examinations there is zero correlation between weight and levels of arteriosclerosis and related diseases found?

Did you know that people with an overweight BMI have the longest life expectancy, that those with an “ideal” and an “obese” have about the same life expectancy, and that being “underweight” raises mortality rates more than being “morbidly obese”?

Did you know that losing weight and then gaining it back is worse for your heart than remaining at the weight you started consistently?

Did you know that 95% of people who lose weight do gain it back, and there has never been a single documented weight loss program that has been demonstrated to keep the weight off for five years or more in the majority or even a significant minority of people? Like, telling people to lose weight isn’t much use if we don’t know HOW to make that happen.

Like I have read The Obesity Myth by Paul Campos and Rethinking Thin by Gina Kolata and Big Fat Lies by Glenn A Gaesser (Ph.D!) And Fat!So? and several other books that I don’t own and so don’t remember all of their names I spent like four years reading every single study coming out and looking at the methodology and noting which ones had huge holes or terrible methods and which didn’t (the holes were almost always in the pro-weight-loss studies) and like

Big Fat Lies has 27 pages of bibliography. 27 pages worth of scientific citation. The book content itself is only 197 pages. That’s a page of references for every 7 pages of book. Reading the book is just reference after reference and study after study. Most of these doctors (like Linda Bacon, author of Health at Every Size) started out the same way. They wanted to use the scientific method to find a real weight loss program or health solution that worked and could be proven to work, and so studied everything they could about weight and fitness only to find out that we didn’t need weight loss in the first place. That all the studies calling for it were lacking or nonexistent. That weight and underlying metabolic health have very little relation. That the history of our relationship with health and obesity has little basis in fact and a LOT of basis in capitalism, politics, and fashion. No, really, the association between weight and health was first proposed by insurance companies looking for ways to charge people more by claiming risk. They also charged tall and short people more. And people with different skin colors. When they got in trouble for charging people for things they had no control over and had no bearing on their health, they set out to prove that weight was controllable and that fat was unhealthy to make money

These are also a lot of the same people who went on to invent the President’s fitness program, so if you went to public school you probably already hate them.

Anyway, if you want a place to start reading about the issue, this article is a pretty good launching pad.

This casual rant is like a primer on weight science. Amazing. I second their book recommendations, and would add to the list Body Respect by Drs Bacon & Aphramor, Body of Truth by journalist Harriet Brown, and What’s Wrong with Fat? by UCLA professor of sociology Abigail Saguy.

man I remember that time I reblogged an anti-fatphobia post and lost a follower and  reader who took the time to come into my DMs and rant about how betrayed he felt that I, who he had trusted and respected, would dare to signal boost content that made people feel like it was okay to be fat. how dare I

anyway the weightloss industry is a scam

Concerning the Twitter crash and burn, there's legit people encouraging others not to engage with creators trying to promote things so that Tumblr doesn't become commercialized, and I have to make something very clear:

A small creator who is encouraging people to interact with/share their stuff, trying to make their art/writing/etc known because they want a livable wage when they have NOWHERE ELSE they can turn to anymore and are trying to succeed in an internet that makes it near impossible for them is -never- gonna be the same thing as a celebrity shoving adds into your face to buy their newest clothing brand.

Don't encourage capitalism but do encourage the artists and writers that provide you most of their content for FREE and just want to pay bills like anyone else and already deal with being buried in the algorithm or having their art stolen and reposted.

We don't want adds or for this site to be monetized either, I assure you.

Been playing a lot of Minecraft recently so...take this DCA x Minecraft Crossover

Sun is the Blaze King over in the Nether and has a bunch of blazes as his little minions while Moon is straight up the Warden in the deep dark. I dunno where I'm going with this AU but it's been ingrained in my brain for a moment

To be honest I think now that every MAGA candidate running for secretary of their state with explicit plans to fuck up the coming presidential election has lost AND it looks like Dems are going to win Georgia and thus have enough of a majority in the Senate to actually do stuff AND it's entirely possible they'll keep the House I think we can change the post election messaging from a bittersweet "it may seem like we lost and didn't achieve much but if you look at the bigger picture this was a big step in the right direction" to a loud, victorious "despite everything with the help of millennial and gen z voters we pulled off the fucking impossible and you should feel so incredibly overwhelmingly proud of and empowered by that"

This election didn't just hold the line, we crushed the far right almost everywhere that it mattered, made up for our losses flipping previously red areas, kept the margins razor thin even where we lost so they know we aren't here to fuck around, and set ourselves up for an even bigger win in 2024, so you should never again feel like you're powerless or your vote doesn't matter. Every single one of you mattered. You made and will continue to make all the difference. I mean the 18-28s voted so hard we apparently canceled out EVERYONE OVER 65. That is fucking incredible. Trust me, the GOP is scared of us for a reason and we can keep up the momentum, crush them again and again.

We didn't just barely stagger to the finish line, we ran full force over it, and we should celebrate that.

Like I cannot stress enough that on Tuesday night the idea that the Dems would keep the Senate by as wide a margin as this AND possibly keep the House was Completely Fucking Unthinkable, and yet here we are. Damn near every political analyst on twitter is admiting they never thought this was possible, that it basically shouldn't have been possible. Everything was stacked against us, every bit of previous wisdom and statistics and polls and state, county, and demographic voting history said it should have been a red tsunami, but IT WASN'T, and that's because of us.

I am not exaggerating when I say that we literally pulled off the impossible. We humiliated the far right by beating them within an inch of their lives in an election cycle that should have been a cake walk for them. They're in full meltdown, attacking each other trying to rationalize it, hell they want to change the voting age because they're so scared of us.

Young voters proved that we're not apathetic, that we make all the difference, that we're who needs to be catered to, that no one can afford to ignore us.

We made fucking history this week, and I can't wait to see what we do next.

and this is with roughly ONE. QUARTER. of gen Z turning out to vote.

imagine what we could do with 30% turnout? 50%? if we can overcome the gerrymandering, voter suppression, lies, conspiracy theories, billions of dollars, and open threat of violence with only 1 in 4 of us turning up to the polls, what magic could we work if it was 1 in 2?

if you voted this election, please take this as proof of how important your vote is. this is something to be insanely proud of, to get fired up over! we can fucking do this!

Just a reminder that maintaining control of the Senate means that the current pattern of judicial appointments (appointing and confirming a judiciary that ‘more accurately reflects the diversity of our country’) can continue. A record number of women, marginalized people, former public defenders and civil rights lawyers have been confirmed. This is ‘reshaping the judiciary’, and this is why some folks are up in arms and demanding that the voting age threshold be raised to 28. You voted. You did this. Please don’t ever let them stop you.

THANK YOU GEN Z

having internet friends is the same as having irl friends but backwards. when you first meet someone irl the first thing you see is your face, and the first thing you learn is their name. maybe you ask where they're from, what their family is like, what they like to do in their free time. you have to figure out if you want to be friends. but if you make friends over the internet, you already have a shared interest. you might learn each other's routines, timezones, different habits. but learning their real name is a big deal. face reveals are an even bigger deal. the things you usually first learn about someone are some of the last things you learn about someone you meet online. you're making friends, but backwards.

love seeing everyone in the notes say how much they love their online friends and how grateful they are for them. love seeing love in the world

If You’re Gonna Make Something Wheelchair Accessible, Don’t Make it a Thing

Here’s some examples awkward accessibility being a thing:

Your at a hotel that has a lift to get you from one sub-floor to another, but the lift can only be unlocked and operated by one specific person that the hotel now has to go find. Sure, they’ve made the entrance to the sub-floor is accessible, but now it’s a thing.

The buses are wheelchair accessible but the driver has to stop the bus, take 30 seconds to lower the goddamn ramp, move passengers out of their seats, hook up the straps and then secure you in the bus. Sure, they’ve made the busses accessible but now it’s a thing.

The restaurant has an accessible entrance, but it’s past the trash room and through the kitchen. Sure, the restaurant is accessible, but now it’s an insulting thing.

Here’s some great examples of accessibility not being a thing:

The train to the airport pulls up flush with the platform. I board with everyone else and sit wherever the fuck I want. Riding the train is accessible and not a thing.

In Portland, I press a button the side of the streetcar and a ramp automatically extends at the same time the door opens. I board in the same amount of time as everyone else. This is not a thing.

I get that it is difficult to design for wheelchair accessibility, but folks need to start considering the overall quality of the experience versus just thinking about meeting the minimum requirements.

For the love of all things holy please pay attention to this

Still baffles me that there´s so little wheelchair accessibility when every single human can get in an unfortunate event - an accident, an illness - and become dependent on a wheel chair.

Anyone else feeling burnt out by streaming services because any time you start a show the company expects an immediate audience and a fucking worldwide campaign of support or they’ll cancel it.

Stuff like “watching things in your own time around your busy life and work schedule might cause your show to be cancelled” is insane

Wasn't streaming supposed to be about the ability to watch things in your own time? Wasn't that, like, the main fucking draw?

isn’t it weird how hypercapitalism cannibalizes itself?

blackmailing us into binging
