Pretty sure that originated with @freedom-of-fanfic and while I’ve seen a lot of people making fun of it, most of those people mocking the idea are too young to remember a time before 9/11 and therefore of course it sounds absurd that the culture was ever any different than it currently is
honestly I can think of a bunch of ways anti-shipping ties to the cultural impacts of 9/11, because you can tie almost anything in American culture to the impact of 9/11. Its like a “three degrees of separation” game. it’s funny that it’s contrivsial because “this cultural movement is related to 9/11” in America is like…. a cheap shot. Of course it is. Everything is
I realize that this sounds funny if you didn’t live through the cultural change that came along with 9/11 but it changed *everything*. If you weren’t old enough to be an active participant in society before it happened then you cannot possibly understand this. And to some degree or another this impact was felt in many parts of the world, not just the US.
Things that came about post-9/11:
1. A culture of fear. The threat of terrorism changed day to day life. People came to accept fear as just built into their lives. This was fear of terrorists but eventually led to the pearl-clutching, the world is the most dangerous its ever been, “think of the children” mentality that exists today. This is when the idea that we should be hand holding and looming over children became the accepted ideal. Does that sound familiar? It should, because that’s the core of anti rhetoric. People who were adults or almost-adults when 9/11 happened weren’t raised with this mentality hanging over them so *that’s* why most pro-shippers advocate for self-responsibility rather than censorship “for the children’s sake”.
2. People (Americans in particular) decided that personal privacy was something that they were willing to sacrifice for the greater good. Because if you don’t have something to hide, why are you worried? This would be where call out culture was born, imho.
3. Culture of censorship is born. Media was heavily censored in the wake of 9/11. The way in which people were expected to talk about certain topics (terrorism, but also foreign cultures, literature, etc) was heavily influenced by the government narrative of events. It became okay for “bad” or “harmful” things to be censored because they might upset someone.
That’s just a taste of it. So no, people aren’t saying Post 9/11 because they won’t stop talking about something that happened 18 years ago. 9/11 is a defining moment in history not because of the actual terrorist attack but because of the massive cultural and legal changes that came about in the aftermath, so much so that Pre-9/11 and Post 9/11 are considered to be completely distinct time periods in history.

You used to be able to get on a plan without having your naked body on someone’s viewscreen. You didn’t have to take off your shoes. You didn’t have to act like a criminal. You could just, you know, get on a plane and go.

You used to be able to walk into most public buildings and not be eyed warily by some deputy sheriff. You didn’t have to go through metal detectors at all.
Yes, it sea-changed everything and created an entire generation of paranoid adults and kids who never knew what it was like before and who now expect everyone to watch out for their interests instead of learning how to watch out for their own. You know, like adults do. Like curating your own internet and fandom experience.
Joke about it, sure, but man– we’re all worse off for it.
I remember VERY CLEARLY sitting on the deck on 9/11 – we were in Ocean City, @mistresskabooms had just turned a year old, and I was sitting on the top deck of the Safari Motel, looking out at the ocean, and I said to a friend of mine, “It’s like that line from The Maxx, ‘The world will never be the same size again.’” We KNEW at the time that no matter what happened from this point forward that there would be a huge cultural shift, but I don’t think even those of us sitting there at eight PM watching the sunset on the waves (yes the sun sets behind you, yes, the colors on the water are ‘sunset on the waves,’ don’t @ me) could have predicted exactly how much the world would change.
You could just go anywhere when I was a kid without constantly being monitored. It’s so hard to explain the freedom that I had as a teenager to … just… run… around.

So I’m watching War Farm with a group of friends, and I gotta say:

We need this. Every Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, Stardew fan out there, we need this.
It’s wartime. You’re a farmer, needed at home to keep everyone fed, and thus exempt from serving in the military. You’re given higher planting goals and warned of oncoming shortages. Most of your animals get sold off to conserve feed, thus resulting in the typical start of game lack of animals.
Each season, you’re given a goal for the following: in spring, you must drain as much of a swampy field as possible in order to plant multi-season crops in time [big reward, as require no watering if you can manage it, set and forget kind of crop]; in summer, you prepare for fall by getting canning gear set up; in fall, it’s time to preserve as much stuff as possible.
Crafting requires converting older materials or learning how to make due with what you have. Learn how to make tiles, booze, new farming tech. Friends can teach you more efficient recipes depending on their backgrounds.
As the war goes on, you get new villagers as people evacuate the cities. Build housing for them in your empty barns: the better you do, the more affection they gain for you, and the more they can help out in your farm. Children can water crops and care for chickens, but adults are required for anything sharp or pointy. Locals are better at foraging, but townies are better acquainted with tech.
Family options: Woo locals or refugees. Stay single but adopt orphans. Potentially have random factors for each play through such as which people become widows/widowers/orphans. Depending on RNG, the availability of NPCs to become your family varies wildly.
Have an affection system based on keeping promises/helping out instead of gift-giving, as resources are low. Yes, you’re helping this entire family by repairing their roof, but you’re going with the son’s method instead of the father’s, and thus have a bigger affection increase with the kid. Each season has morale-raising festivals, and the more you contribute, the bigger a boost you get across the whole community.
As for timelines, we keep with the two or three year formula, with challenges rising as time goes on. Listen to the radio for the developing story line of the war itself; have conversational cut scenes with your neighbors as you shift through what is news and what is propaganda; befriend or distance neighbors who want to stay informed or long to be ignorant; discover what effect making or missing your goals can have on the world as people either succeed or starve.
At the end, we are rewarded with the war being over, and we get treated to a slideshow of the tasks we had in upgrading our farm, showing how the development occurred (or not!). Depending on how things went, we might also get different epilogues for our friends, too, seeing who went back home, stayed in the countryside, or moved to the city with their new city friends.

I want to introduce you to the wonderful world of subject librarians and Libguides.
I’m sure it’s common knowledge that scholars and writers have academic specialties. The same is true for subject librarians! Most libraries use a tool called Libguides to amass and describe resources on a given topic, course, work, person, etc. (I use them for everything. All hail Libguides.) These resources can include: print and ebooks, databases, journals, full-text collections, films/video, leading scholars, data visualizations, recommended search terms, archival collections, digital collections, reliable web resources, oral histories, and professional organizations.
So, consider that somewhere out there in the world, there may be a librarian with a subject specialty on the topic you’re writing on, and this librarian may have made a libguide for it.
Are you writing about vampires?
How about poverty?
Do you need particular details about how medicine or hygiene was practiced in early 20th century America?
You can learn about Japanese Imperial maps, the American West, controlled vocabularies, Crimes against art and art forgeries, anti-Catholicism, East European and Eurasian vernacular languages, geology, vaudeville, home improvement and repairs, big data, death and dying, and conspiracy theories.
Because you’re searching library collections, you won’t have access to all the content in the guides, and there will probably be some link rot (dead links), but you can still request resources through your own library with interlibrary loan, or even request that your library purchase the resources! Even without the possibility of full-text access, libguides can give you the words, works, people, sites, and collections to improve your research.

Looking for ways to make the most of the resources that are freely available to you just down the road? Libraries from Atlantic City to Saratoga Springs to South Australia are making guides for their various resources, which describe everything from how to search databases to how to read call numbers to how to access online resources like e-books and video subscriptions!
Even major institutions like the New York Public Library have guides, on everything from genealogy to the history of New York neighborhoods!
