Holiday Reminder

⭐️Self-kindness is not something that you have to earn, and neither is food⭐️

Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or you don’t, many of us understand how overwhelming this time of year can be - especially for people with mental health struggles.

Nourishing ourselves during times of stress (when and if we have the means to do so) is a crucial aspect of self-care and body kindness.

There are many ways we can show ourselves kindness this holiday season. On days like today, this can mean:

🌷eating foods that you enjoy

🌷listening to your body and hunger cues

🌷 feeding yourself even when you don’t have those cues (yes, your body still needs it!)

🌷walking away from family/friend conversations that are uncomfortable or triggering

🌷choosing not to attend family holiday events because they do not feel safe

🌷anything else that offers you comfort that does not harm your physical, mental, or emotional well-being

Not gonna pretend it’s always easy! There can be others around us saying cruel or ignorant things, and it can be difficult not to internalize that.

This makes any and every act of self-preservation and self-care even more important.

And you, yes, you reading this deserve that kindness.

Please take care of yourselves this holiday season, friends💜

Hopefully most people are not attending large family gatherings this year (it’s dangerous y’all, please don’t put yourself or others at risk) but the general message of being kind to yourself unconditionally remains true and relevant!

My favorite low-cal substitutes and options! All under 50 calories.

How to Cast Spells That Work

In her book Wicca for Beginners Thea Sabin says, “When you do a spell, you are telling the universe that you intend to bring about a certain change and you are putting the energy in motion to achieve that end.”

A spell is sort of an energetic shove to get things moving in the way you want them to, and we do this by creating a ritual to build and then release the energy to get things going.

Most spells are based on a principle called imitative magic.

In his book Backwoods Shamanism, Ray Hess says, “Imitative magic means that making a symbolic gesture, when combined with intent and will… can affect the intended change on a grander scale.” [Note: I don’t actually recommend this book, but I like Hess’s definition of imitative magic.]

So, for example, you may have heard of a “cord cutting” ritual, where you symbolically cut your spiritual ties to a person you no longer want to have a relationship with. You’re symbolically creating a separation between yourself and that person, which creates physical separation in real life.

There are four basic components to any spell: your will, your intention, focused energy, and a ritual action. Some magical traditions add extra steps, like casting a circle, but from what I’ve read and been taught, these four basic components are constant no matter which tradition you’re following.

Let’s start with the most important bit: your will. Your will isn’t just what you want: it’s the desire and drive that is in alignment with your highest good. But in this case we’re also talking about will in the sense of willpower — Basically, your will is your personal spiritual authority and the source of your magical power.

Any spell that is not in alignment with your will won’t work. This is why it’s important to be clear about what you want and why you want it before you attempt a spell.

There’s also an element of belief here. Because magic only works when your spells are in alignment with your will, if you don’t believe your spell can work, it won’t. This is because you, yourself are blocking it from working.

The second important component of a  spell is your intention. When you do a spell, it’s important to clearly state what you want to happen. Some traditions will write the intention down on a piece of paper, which is called a petition. Other traditions will use a spoken statement of intention in the form of an incantation. Some witches use both.

You need to be clear about your intention before you begin your spell. Magic will always follow the path of least resistance, so it’s important to be specific. However, I find that magic works better when your intention leaves a little bit of wiggle room. It’s about finding that happy medium.

You also want to keep your petitions and incantations simple. If it’s more than a couple of sentences, you probably need to trim it down a little.

The next important part of a spell is focused energy. Magic is a way of directing energy, and this means that your own energy needs to be focused for it to work.

Don’t get too stressed out about focus. Your spell isn’t going to fail if your mind wanders for a few seconds. But you should set aside some time where you’ll be able to fully dedicate yourself to your spell. Try to find a private place where you won’t be interrupted. Turn off the TV, put your phone away, and try to avoid distractions. You might find that playing meditation music or burning incense helps you focus.

While you cast your spell, keep focusing on what it is you want to manifest. Again, don’t overthink this and don’t worry if your thoughts wander a little, but try to stay in the moment. Repeating your incantation can help with maintaining focus.

The last important part of a spell is your ritual action. This just means doing a specific set of things, in a specific order, with a specific intent behind them. If we go back to our definition of imitative magic, your ritual actions are symbolic of the change you want to manifest.

Your ritual actions do not have to be complex. A very common ritual for spells is anointing and lighting a candle. Making a charm or poppet is also popular. But any action can be a magical ritual if it is done with intent and focus, in alignment with your will. Making a cup of tea or coffee can be a ritual. Running a bath can be a ritual. Cooking food can be a ritual. The only limit is your imagination.

These four things are literally all you need to cast a spell. A spell doesn’t have to be complicated or include a bunch of crystals and herbs to work. You can do an effective spell with nothing but your own mind and body.

Cord Cutting Ritual

To Start off, What is a Cord Cutting Ritual? ✂️

A Cord Cutting Ritual is a practice sometimes used when we want to cut the spiritual and emotional ties from someone in our life. This can be anyone; past partner, family member, friend, etc.

The Steps ✂️

You don’t need any fancy tools to do this. Just a pen, paper, string, scissors or fire, and your energy. Anything else is optional.
  1. Cleanse and Clear your energy by using whatever method you like, (meditation, sageing, prayer, etc.) and focus your intention on love, not hate. That’s not the purpose of this ritual.
  2. Whenever you feel aligned and connected, using your paper and pen, write your name on one small piece of paper, and the name of the other person on another piece of paper. You can write any other words of release at this time as well, but remeber to focus the intention on love. For example... “I release this person from my life, and they can no longer hurt me.” “I am free from all ties connected to this person.”
  3. Once you’re done, you’re going to want to cut your string into increments of 9. 9 symbolising “the end.” For example 18 inches, 45 centimetres etc. Preferably using black string, but any color works.
  4. Now, fold your papers, and tie each paper to one end of you string. At this time if you’re planning on using fire to cut the cord, light your candle, or get your match or lighter ready. (If using a tea light you can choose to add essential oils now, or carve a sigil on the top of your candle)
  5. Finally, cut your rope in the center using whatever means you want. Focus your intention on love and release as you do this, and watch as the two sides separate.
  6. You can then choose to burn each side of the papers separately, and release the ashes; or dispose of the papers by burying them in two separate places.
  7. After this, be sure to close your energy using any method you like. Mediation, prayer (espressing gratitude to your guides), cleansing, etc. If using a tea light, let it fully burn out, (supporting your healing as it does) or snuff your candle.

Now, Trust! The Spiritual Tie is Released ✂️

Just a reminder that you can change this up however you see fit for you personally. This is just a rough outline. Trust your intuition above all throughout the ritual.

Small things that will change your life:

  • Each morning: Write down three things you are excited for in the day (it can be little things like drinking a tea, cleaning, putting on your favourite shirt etc.).
  • Each night: List three things you are grateful for (again, it can be little things that made you smile briefly, the weather, an act of kindness etc.)
  • Smile at people you pass on the street. It will give them a reason to smile too and you will feel good.
  • Do a few minutes of stretching every day. Mental health is closely related to physical health, just a few minutes of exercise every day can improve your well being.
  • Set a time during the day where you put your phone and everything else that has a screen away. You might not know it but staring at a screen for too long can leave you feeling frustrated and unfulfilled, which is why it is extremely important to get away from those devices for at least a few minutes a day. Instead, go for a walk, play a card or board game, meet up with friends, cook, bake, do sports, etc.
  • Declutter. Whether it be your clothes, books, emails, phone, social media accounts or even people in your life, take a few minutes each week to think about the question ‘What is still serving me?’  and then act accordingly to your answer. Getting rid of old things that might weigh you down and making space for new things is very freeing and definitely good for your mental health.
  • Accept compliments, give compliments and stop negative self talk. I have said it before and I will repeat it over and over again: Your thoughts will reflect in your life, so make sure you actively go against hurtful thoughts about yourself and others. It requires discipline and effort, but it is so worth it. You are so worth it, my love.
