if your bio says proshippers DNI, why in the fuck are you following me

like I really don't think "if you don't want me to interact with you, then don't interact with me" is a terribly difficult or objectionable ask

hmm AU where post sun-shot, during some gathering perhaps, a man walks up and loudly proclaims that Wei Wuxian seduced his sister! Made promises of marrying her, left her pregnant with a child.

The child in question is hardly a year old, small, and crying pitifully.

It’s a lie, of course.

He makes some talk about needing money to raise his sister’s child, talking big about Yunmeng Jiang owning him for dishonoring his sister so. He’s after the money, obviously, thinking there’s a monthly stipend he can weasel out of this.

Jiang Cheng is already ready to throw the man out for daring to step out of line like this, but Wei Wuxian only pauses.

“Your sister, huh?” he says, eyes flickering the the specter in the corner.

He doesn’t know her - and she cries and rages about her brother’s lies, about the funeral he denied her and her husband, how badly he treats a child so young.

“Yunmeng Jiang thanks you then,” Wei Wuxian decides, and before the man can protest, takes the child from him.

There will be consequences for this too, another dent in his reputation, for sure a terrible conversation with his siblings, attempting to get his new child’s mother to move on before anyone can ask her about the ruse - but at least the child doesn’t have to grow up unwanted.

A note to all creatives:

Right now, you have to be a team player. You cannot complain about AI being used to fuck over your industry and then turn around and use it on somebody else’s industry.

No AI book covers. No making funny little videos using deepfakes to make an actor say stuff they never did. No AI translation of your book. No AI audiobooks. No AI generated moodboards or fancasts or any of that shit. No feeding someone else’s unfinished work into Chat GPT “because you just want to know how it ends*” (what the fuck is wrong with you?). No playing around with AI generated 3D assets you can’t ascertain the origin of. None of it. And stop using AI filters on your selfies or ESPECIALLY using AI on somebody else’s photo or artwork.

We are at a crossroad and at a time of historically shitty conditions for working artists across ALL creative fields, and we gotta stick together. And you know what? Not only is standing up for other artists against exploitation and theft the morally correct thing to do, it’s also the professionally smartest thing to do, too. Because the corporations will fuck you over too, and then they do it’s your peers that will hold you up. And we have a long memory.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking “your peers” are only the people in your own industry. Writers can’t succeed without artists, editors, translators, etc making their books a reality. Illustrators depend on writers and editors for work. Video creators co-exist with voice actors and animators and people who do 3D rendering etc. If you piss off everyone else but the ones who do the exact same job you do, congratulations! You’ve just sunk your career.

Always remember: the artists who succeed in this career path, the ones who get hired or are sought after for commissions or collaboration, they aren’t the super talented “fuck you I got mine” types. They’re the one who show up to do the work and are easy to get along with.

And they especially are not scabs.

*that’s not even how it ends that’s a statistically likely and creatively boring way for it to end. Why would you even want to read that.

“stop congratulating cis allies for doing the bare minimum” NO!!! i want to encourage speaking out and being on trans people’s side!!! stop being assholes to people just trying to support you and give them room to grow!!!

one of my friends is a cishet woman who struggles with my pronouns and understanding nonbinary people but she will make fun of desantis with me and today she showed me a photo of helium on the periodic table(He) and said “like your pronouns!” and we both fucking lost it. she still sometimes uses my deadname on accident but we’ve been friends since we were 7 and i only came out to her a year or so ago. our enby friend “some guy called me a woman” really upset and my friend went “does he know he’s just wrong???”. she does not understand really hrt or srs but she is on my side. i dont think we should stop there but fuck man, why are you guys so harsh on people for not knowing everything and not being perfect

Someone has said this better than me, but a guy from a small town who replies "I've never really understood transsexuals but I think everybody should be able to do whatever the hell they want with their body without the government gettin' involved" has your back way more than any center-left person who says shit like "I support people who are LGBTQ+ I just don't think we should be talking about that kind of thing around children"

it's mildly annoying when people compare emoji to hieroglyphs. like I get where the misconception comes from, but it's still a little bit frustrating to see

egyptian hieroglyphs were not a system of pictograms, and this becomes readily apparent from looking at any substantial amount of text. some specific concepts had one-character ideographs to represent them, but most things would be spelled out phonetically (but with a similar-ish semantic character next to it to imply the general category that the word you're spelling belongs to)

Couldja explain more? I know very little of hieroglyphics, and you seem knowledgeable.

sure.

so as an example, the ancient egyptian word for "cat" was written like this:

or, using unicode characters your device may or may not display correctly, "𓏇𓇋𓅱𓃠". this was pronounced something like /mi(ʀ)juw/, transliterated as mjw (the similarity to "mew" is not a coincidence.)

this word consists of a sequence of four characters. the first three represent the three consonant sounds in the word, with the first character covering the first two consonants together. then the fourth character is a cat, because this word means "cat".

so, together, this word is spelled something like my-y-w-[cat]. there's both a phonetic component and a semantic component. it's very cool!

so they basically called cats meows🐈? and like the picture was used for more context or something?

so like you could have two different words like wow😮 and wow🙄 and they'd be different words despite having the same phonetics cause of how the semantic component changes it? just like how those emojis change the meaning of wow between genuine astonishment and sarcasm?

that's actually super cool, no idea if i'm right

no. it was nothing like emoji in terms of function or use. the semantic component was part of the word, not secondary to it

a more analogous thing with english would be something like 🦀🦷🐈. the characters making up the phonetic part of the word represent the word's consonant sounds, then the remaining character is there for extra clarity.

So, taking the 🦀🦷🐈 example, you would differentiate between words that use the same consonants with that last character? Like 🦀🦷🐈 vs 🦀🦷✂️ (cat vs cut)?

yes! that is the sort of thing the semantic characters were used for

bc nobody in this fandom has done time travel how I want for the WIP Game because i'm a sucker for time travel.

"Yes, I know," says Yuri dryly. "On a different subject entirely, we're having a guest tonight who I don't think has seen any of those movies. Do we have enough blankets and stuff I can sleep on the floor without hating myself in the morning?"

(one of the things we know about Phichit's favorite movies is they involve time travel, and yet that never ever comes up in time travel fic except as a passing reference, why)

I'd like to request bc nobody in this fandom has done time travel how I want for WIP Wednesday please!

Phichit blinks at his phone: Yuri's never wanted to talk worldbuilding for this series when they're not in the middle of any of the movies. "Canonically, I don't think so? If you're writing a fanfic, it's gonna depend partly on what works for your fanfic, but I am always down for canon review."

WIP Wednesday Game

It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.

Here’s how it works:

  • In a reblog of this post (so people can find you in the notes) or new thread (w/ rules attached) if you want to play on your own, post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.
  • Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!
  • After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can't share from (for example, an event or gift fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.
  • That’s it! You can invite others to join in, or just post. I’ll be searching the reblogs to find people to send asks to!

If you’re reading this, you’re invited!

If you see someone posting a WIP Wednesday Game snippet, send them an ask! Make them write.

Requested/Friend event mentions under the cut! If you'd like to be pinged next week, let me know!

still the same WsIP as last time, back to bullet 1:

"Your theme for this year is 'worthwhile'. Can you tell us more about that?"
The JSF press conference in September got the full version, complete with a rough sketch of a toy poodle with a collar tag reading V. There might be a fan translation somewhere. Here and now, Yūri reaches for English words and comes up almost empty: only Yūko and Phichit's insistence that he rehearse his answer to this saves him. "Figure skating is an expensive sport," he tells the reporter. "We all know about the money and time and effort—"
  • starting right now I'll be strong [the one where Victor and Yuuri aren't in contact between Sochi GPF and Cup of China]
  • the one where Viktor skips his Nationals medal ceremony & exhibition
  • le tue mani, le tue gambe, le mie mani, le mie gambe [the Victuuri bodyswap]
  • bc nobody in this fandom has done time travel how I want
  • trans Yuuri kidfic

“The Barbie movie is like basic gender studies 101. It’s like the bare minimum for feminism”

YEAH SOME PEOPLE HAVENT TAKEN GENDER STUDIES 101 AND WOULDNT YOU AGREE WE ARE CURRENTLY AT LESS THAN THE BARE MINIMUM FOR FEMINISM?

things do not need to be perfect to be good. You cannot teach someone intersectionality if that person has not heard of bare minimum feminism. You might be on step 100 but just because you started earlier does not mean that everyone can jump to your level. They have to climb the stairs too. And the people at the top yelling down to the people at the bottom that being at the bottom is bad, they need to be at the top, IT DOES NOT ENCOURAGE THEM TO CLIMB UP.

Also, despite the film obviously being marketed more to adults, it's still a film about a kid's toy. Certainly when I went to see it in the cinema, about a third of the audience seemed to be families with kids under the age of ten.

Like, I've seen posts derogatorily describing it as 'baby's first feminism', but like, for the five year old girl sitting at the other end of the aisle from me, it probably was???

And obviously who knows how much of the message she actually understood, but I still think it's nice that kids are being exposed to these ideas in some way. Given that sexism 101 is being pushed on kids basically from birth, it's ridiculous that feminism 101 has to wait till they're in college.

for the past 10 years I have worked at a NPO that introduces intersectional feminist concepts to girls (and youth who feel our environment is the best fit for them) from pre-kindergarten on, and the difference this early exposure and intersectional learning makes in their lives is HUGE. Their self-concept, resourcefulness, ambitions, autonomy, and ability to navigate challenges goes through the roof as a result. Intro feminism is an excellent foundation on which to build.
