When I needed most. -> she’s an angel.
emilymcb: Just a casual Sunday: high-fiving, hanging out, cheering on, and welcoming home the NWSL Champs the @thornsfc! It’s cool…
Happy Birthday Tobin Heath!
Unfortunately, I lost a lot of photos (~20-30K) due to a crash of my computer and backup while trying to get things on the cloud. Talk about freak timing. I only salvaged some photos and this time next year, hopefully I will replenish my stock.
Anyway, TL;DR: I animate her World Cup Goal Celebration at the end and all the writing are just a bit of commentary behind some photos. I will be posting the animation on my Instagram (kryptobanana) as well. Cheers!
This is one of my favorite photos of Tobin. I think if you follow me, you know that already. It isn’t a picture of her nutmegging or making defenders trip on themselves but it shows a side of her that I always loved. This cool, calm, and collected demeanor that surveys the field. You can almost hear the gears turning in her head as she calculates the best place to throw the ball. Maybe I am getting carried away but this was always my first thought when I captured it.
You see, this was my first time seeing her play live. You would think, living in Seattle, I would have caught her with Portland but for some strange reason, the universe would intervene. By universe, I mean graduate school or an injury for Tobin or camp for Tobin and in the case of last year…a red card. Although it did result in a picture that continues to be the most popular on my blog. I guess when you capture a different form of absolute joy, people love it.
I don’t really remember USAvBRA well enough. All I have is this series where it appears Tobin and Christen had some sort of collision? Maybe a few others if you check the USAvBRA tag.
When I finally did see her in a PTFC jersey, the game had every emotion of Tobin imaginable. As a photographer, this is the dream. I won’t post all of the pictures here. I will explain though, for me, I think this game really brought about a new creativity, a new love, a new inspiration of what I want to capture and this is all because of Tobin. I mean the Bench Life series was born out of this game. As was the comparison of Tobin warming up with a shot on frame and Tobin during the game taking a shot off frame. This particular series actually came about because I had just taught a course in biomechanics and had started looking at the game this way. Either way, Tobin’s passion on the field really does translate off the field…and in my case, I fell in love with this game even more as I watched through the lens.
However, no matter what I say, the game that will always be memorable is the World Cup Final. A game that I took so many pictures and yet have no memories of any of this. I lost my voice completely after 20 minutes. I was so overwhelmed that I did not even edit the pictures for at least a year. This last year I have learned a lot of things and as I learn a new thing, I revisit these pictures. Well, I have learned a new thing recently and I would say today is a good reason to go back in time to celebrate Tobin’s first World Cup goal, no?

I may have lost some of these images but I still think it looks cool!
Happy Birthday Tobin! May your creativity continue to bring out mine. Actual photogoal: a nutmeg animation.
