Part 51 of my bakery “enemies” au!

and we’re finally done with the wine tasting. By the time this is posted I’ll be on a trip, so cue hiatus!

[ID: Nino smiles and says musingly: “There are a few ways to describe Adrien, huh? Like…” His smile turns vicious. “Radiant?” Adrien stares, his mouth falling open. “… Wait.”

Alya chimes in: “You’re so right, Nino! Or maybe…” The view cuts to her looking devious with her hands steepled as she suggests: “Carefree?” Adrien reels back and whimpers: “This can’t be happening.”

He leans away from Marinette and looks on with horror as a very smug Marinette says: “Dreamy.”

The perspective changes to a bird’s eye view looking down as Marinette, Alya, and Nino throw up their hands and cheer: “Adrien… the fragrance!!!” Adrien lowers his head to the table and groans: “Begone, demons."

The view switches to show them all outside, the panel shaded in purple to show how dark it is. Their coats are all back on. Marinette crosses her arms and says: "I can’t believe they kicked us out.” Nino smiles wryly: “I can’t believe it took them that long.” Alya looks at her phone and frowns: “I can’t believe how late it is already.” Adrien simply smiles. Part 22 of my bakery “enemies” au!

[Image description:

“So you were held at knife point by a dangerous man…And asked for money in exchange for your safetyAnd you didn’t just do what he said?” Exclaim Tom and Sabine, looking extremely worried. Both of them are holding their arms close to their chest and have knitted eyebrows.

Nope!” Reply Marinette and Adrien, clearly proud of themselves. They sport matching grins and have their hands on their hips.

The perspective changes so that everyone is drawn in profile. This makes it all the more noticeable when Tom faints backwards.

Tom!!” They all exclaim. Marinette and Adrien reach out towards him while Sabine has her hands on her head.

End ID]

So aside from the fact that mouth-to-mouth isn't really recommended during CPR anymore, the Trailblazer is sitting up? And you're supposed to start with the compressions, not the mouth-to-mouth.

So either neither March nor Dan Heng have been trained in CPR (Which I would hope they are, given their line of work), or Dan Heng just really wanted that kiss.

damn i just realised our little trio of terror is the 'cant remember fuckshit' crew:

  • Trailblazer is literally a blank slate aside from preprogrammed intrinsics Kafka apparently went around teaching us before we were mind-wiped and went into storage
  • March has had all of her memories before the Express erased or sealed
  • Dan Heng didn't get the full 'Elder Reincarnation' experience because of whatever they did as punishment and is mostly getting drip-fed memories through nightmares

bad memory squad represent 😖😵

Trailblazer just has such good angst, especially in Xianzhou. I got such brain rot after Dan Heng finally catches up with the group, since when you play as him you get the option to talk to your trailblazer before the next part.

But when you talk to them (your trailblazer as Dan Heng) you get: "they don’t want to speak. Nobody can get them to open up" and I get it's so they don't force "you"/your character to say something you wouldn't or didn't choose but it’s so angsty.

A withdrawn trailblazer that’s grateful to the Express but can’t bring themselves to trust them. Who doesn’t understand themselves, and thus doesn’t know what to say or who to trust.

March playing trial-and-error with what they might like or think; guessing until they show one way or another. Welt offering comfort and someone to confide in, but giving them space and waiting for them to come to him. Supportive but not wanting to push them if they aren’t ready.

Himiko welcoming them, encouraging them to travel with the other “young ones”. Trying to get them to forge those friendships and hopefully get them out of their shell.

Dan Heng offering quiet company, asking if they need more context or information. Going out of his way to give important information on all the planets they go to. Whether he goes or not he makes sure to get what he can from the data archive, making sure the trailblazer has it before leaving.

(And that heart breaking moment he’s revealed to be the reincarnation of the Imbibitor Lunae. Where he goes and asks them if they have questions for him but they say nothing. He encourages them to ask, says it’s okay but they refuse to say anything; to open up. Where he realizes that while they have been through a lot together in a short amount of time, he doesn’t really know them. And the trailblazer doesn’t trust him as much as he thought)

When Caelus is 'born', he is well aware of his purpose.

aka: Caelus except he treats himself like a product to be utilized and advertised. Very Pearl-esque, very android-y. Very inconsiderate of himself beside assuring his basic functions, while putting everyone else as higher priority.

bonus: when Kafka sees him like this, she hates it with everything in her. She steals him away for a date where she gets him a new coat, some ice cream, and even goes dumpster diving with him for fun. When the Crew finds him, he's a complete mess... but they've never seen him happier.

the astral express family as a unit is SO important to me.

starting with the trailblazer. confused, used, and hardly remembers anything about who they were before. the stellaron in their body is essentially a ticking time bomb. the personal fear that comes with that is already immense, and that's not even taking into account other people's perceptions. but they were accepted, immediately, stellaron and all. they aren't feared, they're loved. instead of others being protected from them, they're protected from others.

dan heng. scared, lost, and without a home to return to. his past tainted every step he took on the xianzhou, and despite the events of the main story, he's still working through how other people see him, as well as how he sees himself. he's never truly been SEEN before, not as dan heng over dan feng. but he's finally been given a place of acceptance. people who love him as he is, with no attachment to his past self. he's found not only a home that he can always go back to, but a home he WANTS to go back to.

march 7th. the girl who doesn't even remember her own name. we as people are shaped by our memories and out pasts. how can someone so young cope with the great unknown constantly looming over her head? companionship. compassion. the promise that no matter what that unknown brings, she is no longer alone. a hand to hold in the darkness, to guide her through the worst that the universe can bring.

welt yang. loss and grief have shaped the person he is today. the threat of the honkai means the constant fear and application of losing the people most important to you. to have a family in the world of the honkai is just about the most dangerous thing you can do, and he knows this firsthand. his memory is not tampered with, but rather incredibly clear. he was a child when his life was overridden by duty, and that duty is something he refuses to let go of, even now. but these people don't see his duty when they look at him. they don't see the herrscher of reason. they see mr. yang, the ever-reliable, slightly ancient, kind member of the crew.

himeko. everyone on the express will come and go, and the life of a nameless is an inherently lonely one. attachments cannot be too severe, lest severing them ends up destroying her. but here she is, with all her knowledge, loving these people anyway.

memory and acceptance are both key themes with the entire express crew. not just past memory, but the creation of new memories. better memories. the express is a place where who you are is inconsequential, and all that matters is that you're safe now. you're loved now. and you will be loved, no matter what happens. no matter what you do, say, or choose.

and something so constant is the glue that holds this group together. not only that, but something they all desperately need.

the trailblazer, young, confused, and scared, needs something to remind them that they aren't alone. something to latch onto, something to cling to that grounds them through the turmoil of hosting a stellaron. dan heng, the greatest criminal of the vidyadhara, needs something to remind him that there is hope. that his life will not always be weighed down by the mistakes of his predecessor, and that there are people out there who love HIM, just as he is, with no fine print or strings attached. march 7th, with nothing behind her, needs something ahead of her. something real, something concrete, something or someone that she can tangibly see, feel, and hold. the uncertainty and unknown hang over her head like a cloud, but that darkness feels much less scary when someone can hold her hand and tell her she's not alone anymore. welt yang, who's lived so long, been through so much, and lost so many, needs a new beginning. not that he's leaving behind the ties he has left, but forging new ones, with absolutely no strings attached to the identity of the herrscher of reason. think about why he never mentions his past in full; obviously for a multitude of reasons, one of which the subconscious desire for a life untainted by the honkai. and himeko, who left everything behind for her dreams, needs people different than her. something new. like-minded people follow the same principles; fulfill their life's purpose, and exit the express. however, in the midst of all that, she's gained more than colleagues, more than nameless, more than fleeting images of friends long gone. she's gained the unconditional love of a family.

and that's not even getting into the dynamic between just welt and himeko. the fact that himeko always feels alone, and then there's welt, who travelled the very cosmos just to protect the life of a former student he feels like he failed. the fact that she likely has no idea of this fact, and assumes he'll leave the express and return to his "real" family someday, when in reality, the only reason he stepped foot on the express in the first place was FOR her. BECAUSE of her. to protect HER.

i'm gonna be honest, even though void archives hasn't made an official appearance yet, and their motivations are obviously skewed due to the fact that they're not technically human, i would fit them into this too. they were never intended to live their own life. their origins and their programming prevents that. destroy the honkai, above all else, no matter the cost. after millennia of being trapped by otto, their own identity, what little of it existed, slipped through their fingers. why do you think they hate being compared to him so much, despite adopting so many of his patterns and mannerisms? what they need is a life of their own. which connects so deeply with what welt needs, too.

and i'm just spitballing here, but i have a theory that part of the reason they left the express in the first place was because they were afraid of the comeraderie they found there interfering with the reason for their existence.

addendum; if the stellaron is in fact a manifestation of the honkai, i NEED to see how that changes the trailblazer's relationship with everyone. especially given the fact that void archives was created to eradicate every form of the honkai, no matter the cost....

anyway. all this to say. i love the express family so much.

March 7th: Damn! What the hell is wrong with you two?!

Blade, looking at Dan Heng: We love each other.

Trailblazer: You've tried to kill him since the day he first stepped outside!

Dan Heng, shrugging: Typical Tuesday.

I've started playing Honkai Star Rail and I love how dramatically silly it lets me be. So far I have stolen mail, searched garbage cans, entered a closet to become one with the darkness, waxed on about how life is just a road to death to a terrified guy (somehow that seemed to make him less terrified), bowed in respect to a dumpster, investigated an inconspicuous lamp so many times it got mad at me, investigated a trash can so many times it insulted me, and felt bad for two different trash cans and several sandbags (I believe my Trailblazer is going insane from putting up with me). All this not counting with the countless dialogue options with NPCs around the world that allowed me to be incredibly dramatic (think almost Fischl style) for no reason (you can bet I took them). However, I cannot jump or climb, and fights are turn-based... we respect our opponents in Star Rail (and die. A lot).

What I conclude from this is that while the Traveler has a moral code (and some standards) when dealing with interpersonal interactions but isn't bound by physical restrictions or conventions (stairs? The Traveler does not understand that concept. Fair fights? Please, they don't have time for that), the Trailblazer is the exact opposite. The physical rules may hold them but their only ties to social rules or convention so far have been March and Dan Heng saying "hey, maybe don't fight the guards" and "hey, you can't just accept random jobs".

It also might be because the Traveler is a thousand year old entity that has been through A Lot (has learnt the power of friendship, but is too tired to take the long route) and is on a serious mission while the Trailblazer was quite literally Born Yesterday with the sole purpose of housing a massive problem inside their body (walks and fights like a Normal Person bc they're mimicking everyone else, but is absolutely unhinged) and is just having fun with tjeir newfound existence.

Either way I love both of them and they're basically cryptids but in different ways.

The reason the Trailblazer Trio works so well is that the funny man/straight man dynamic is cyclical

Dan Heng plays straight man for March 7th, who plays the straight man for Stelle, who plays the straight man for Dan Heng (and everyone else).

This is why the braincell gets passed around so frequently. March may go around telling everyone the group's secrets and driving Dan Heng up a wall, but in the next moment Stelle is digging through a trash can and murmuring sweet nothings into it, and even for March that's fucking weird.

in my own little headspace brain, i like to believe that the moment they got to the central city of the luofu, march and trailblazer just ran off bc welt isn't used to both of them and just started hitting up every vending machine they found. grandpa welt finds them and he's just so out of breath and flabbergasted bc how did dan heng keep up with the both of them
